GMOs themselves aren't an issue but some GMOs are specifically made so they can resist extra herbicides dumped all over them. I know someone with a celiac disease and it's awful, mere traces of gluten are a guarantee that she will spent the rest of the day on the toilet.. On one hand, gluten-free food is more available than ever, but people take gluten intolerance way less seriously thanks to morons who picked up on a trend. On a recent occasion I had to make clear that someone who has celiac disease is going to attend the party and that she is not one of those who follow a trend, but someone whose day could have been ruined with traces of gluten on her plate. I do not blame the restaurants and hospitality workers who are sceptical, I blame those idiots who helped create a stigma. I've heard stories of restaurants who stopped offering gluten free meals because they had cases of people who ordered gluten free food, only to eat it alongside the ordinary bread. The chef had to clean and decontaminate every surface and unnecessarily waste time on this one order (remember, no *traces*), only to find out that the person who ordered the food has no gluten allergies or problems related to gluten.

I'm really uneducated on the topic but aren't organic labels (in the eu) a way for small farms to be able to sell produce at a price that allows them to survive? If so, then for this alone I'd try to buy organic.
@Nomusicincluded
@Nomusicincluded 22 күн бұрын
@@garak55 There are better methods of supporting small producers for example buying local. Organic production doesn't really help small producers because it requires certification, monitoring and reporting which is difficult to handle on top of farming duties for very small producers. Organic also doesn't really have a large enough market so getting your products sold is more of a challenge. Then there is also the challenge that organic production often means you produce less from 10 - 50% lower yield depending on crop type and climatic conditions. Finally, and this isn't a complete list, you also face more challenges during bad years to handle pest or fungus outbreaks because pesticides and herbicides are limited (even though the plant protection products might not be any less dangerous to humans and animals). Climate change will only exacerbate the dangers of pest and fungus outbreaks due to mild winters and lower insect kill-off.
@Wanderlauch
@Wanderlauch 22 күн бұрын
This is not enough information for such a broad topic. You're right, buying local conventional food is better than importing fruits from SA in a lot of ways, but these various organic labels exist, because they can do "whatever they want" with conventional produce. Animal protection is also a huge issue. Sure, no label can protect animals from unnecessary harm, but that doesn't mean it's useless. It just means that inspections need to be done regularly.
@tommykraft9648

Elaborate about why its not usefull regarding environmental protection
@Nomusicincluded
@Nomusicincluded 22 күн бұрын
@@Wanderlauch Conventional can't "do whatever they want", even conventional has limits. The reality is that Organic is codified with specific and strict rules whereas "conventional" is a spectrum and is subject to whatever people tell you to think it is. The reality is that most conventional farmers will do their best with the knowledge and tools they have but receive less in the way of subsidies because they don't follow the strict and arbitrary rules of organic (such as no mineral fertilizer or no GMOs). I worked in a family run winery that decided not to go organic because it was too risky because a couple of bad years could sink the business. Animal welfare is a separate issue and often has independent labels to address it. Edit: Also the reason organic agriculture exists is not for actual scientific reasons but rather because a while back a person who believed in voodoo decided chemicals bad (Rudolf Steiner who based his system off of anthroposophy and Lady Balfour of the soil association who was a proponent of homeopathy for animals)

I don't have formal education on the topic, so it's entirely possible that everything I've read about it has been incorrect in some way, but my concern with organic is the farming practices that go into it. As far as I can tell based on what I've read, organic practices seem to be, effectively, more efficient and sustainable use of the land rather than sort of forcing crops to grow in places not necessarily suited to them through the heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers. My worry with pesticides is lifetime chronic buildup, not instant accute poisoning that gives you weight loss, as well as their potential environmental impact. I don't think organic potatoes are "true" potatoes with more nutrients, I just think non-organic potatoes have the potential to have trace chemicals that I don't need to consume, and would prefer not to.

The second group exists, i don't have celiac but i got IBS through taking anti biotics, ever since then I've been gluten intolerant. They will make me cramp up hard and just makes life miserable. But when they test me for celiac is doesn't come back positive. They tested me for Crohn's as well, don't have that either. So basically after they check you for everything and they can't find a specific group you belong to, its just like you got IBS. Turns out I'm fodmap, gluten & lactose intolerant now. I had to go through a bunch of different diets to find one that made me have a normal life again. unless you have been fed gluten sans any fodmaps, you can't say it's the gluten and not one of the many hundreds of other components of wheat products, which also happen to have lots of fodmaps, starches, etc. I have IBS as well, and yes, restricting wheat products drastically reduces symptoms, but I would never say it was gluten before yeast, sugar alcohols, starches or even an actual gluten allergy (which one could test for confirmation of course)

I've always heard the thought around organic food is not due to nutritional benefits, but avoiding potential cancer causing pesticides, etc. as there seems to be correlational (not causational, at least not yet) reduced risk of cancer among those who eat more organic foods. Honestly if you’re upper-middle class-ish or above there’s no harm in just buying it, just to be safe. It can’t really hurt you as long as you’re not deluding yourself into thinking it’s automatically healthy because it’s organic. It’s a problem when you aren’t exactly well off and the “organic” version of a food cost several times more (i’ve literally seen strawberries costing 4x as much in the same store because of being organic). This goes for the vast majority of people, and the evidence isn’t clear enough for most people to justify paying much more for it.
@SpiderFan3000
@SpiderFan3000 22 күн бұрын
Organic food doesn't mean there aren't any pesticides. They just different ones. Washing produce gets rid of the vast majority of what little residue remains after the fruit is washed after harvesting, and peeling will get rid of more if you're still worried. There's no way of getting rid of 100% (even with organic) but you can get pretty close. I think the real concern should be for the farmers who are in regular close contact with large quantities of pesticides. This can cause serious problems if the necessary protections aren't in place. It's a dose makes the poison kind of situation.
@SpiderFan3000
@SpiderFan3000 22 күн бұрын

Organic only hypothetically matters if you are eating the outside of the food and they aren't easily washable. So small berries essentially (apples are washable but if you don't trust the washing you can do, go ahead and throw them in the organic category) but if the part exposed to the chemicals you want to avoid is going to get thrown out (think oranges) or it's processed (you aren't dodging chemicals in a factory) then it's just a more expensive version of the same calories

Dear Dr. Mike, I highly respect your general opinion regarding everything exercise, diet and overall health - and I highly enjoy the science-based foundation you, as many of the rest of us, rely on. I just want to emphasize your responsibility (as you have a wide audience) when it comes to spreading a narrative, which might be a little 'one-sided'. The potential negative effects of pesticides (e.g. TCAA, glyphosate, etc.) on your hormonal system and general health, are worth highlighting instead of spreading the message that conventional is comparable to organic farming. I know this is a rather "new" field in the science and many countries are first now addressing the problems of pesticides, PFAS or similar compound groups. This was just from the perspective of a hydrogeologist, who experiences an increasing amount of pesticides in our groundwater resources primarily as a result of conventional farming - and keeps hearing about the potential negative effects that pesticides causes. Thank you for your crusade of bringing concrete knowledge to this field and cutting out the BS - much love!

Why dont bodybuilders ever talk about glyphosate? Many people target organic food because it is sprayed with less or no glyphosate or pesticides. We love to talk about micronutrients but we never talk about chemicals. Calories dont matter if at the end of the day your cells and gut are being inflamed by pesticides and chemicals. This kind of talk just lines up with a steroid mentality - short term gains with not much long term thought on health/longevity.

People don't talk about glyphosate because there is no evidence it does anything. Organic foods have been proven, unsurprisingly, to have less pesticides on them. However this decreased level of pesticides has not been shown to have any health benefits. Chemicals that do cause issues are typically banned from conventional food too by whatever your countries food health organization is. There does need to be more research done on the long term health effects of the chemicals sprayed on our foods. There's just no good way to do studies at the moment. Nearly all data is self reported, the time recquired is immense, short term studies don't show any basis for pursuing it and there are so many other issues. One of the biggest issues is the marketing. Since it has been marketed as a health food there are lifestyle issues whenever you try to compare data outside of large scale long term studies. Are they healthy because they chose organic or are they choosing organic because they choose healthy? This has made observational studies particularly tricky.

I am strongly against “GMO” because I feel strongly that the agrichem companies are abusing their market power… There is a video out there on how they lobbied to get the law changes so they could patent shit that is natural (like literally plants you can grow in your garden) and they literally have sued small scale farmers who cross breed plants. So I am more accurately anti agrichem than anti gmo

I feel like the messaging of this video isn't clear. You're talking about "health" but actually mostly just talking about weight and body fat. If I ate 2000 calories of mcdonalds a day I wouldn't expect to be fatter than 2000 calories of a blanaced diet, but I'd still expect to have a reduced life expectancy. Caloric density is one aspect of food being "healthy", but certainly far from the whole picture.

Organic and non-GMO are two distinct things. In theory, organic would avoid the intake of pesticides, with the potential to affect your health in the medium and long term. Non-GMO are already more esoteric and afraid of possible unforeseen consequences of the genetic modification of food.
@fjvarro
@fjvarro 22 күн бұрын
Right, but in practice Organic just means the intake of DIFFERENT pesticides, some with a proven longer period of residence and potential harm; and Non-GMO also means not getting things like Potatoes that A) bruise less easily (reducing food waste) B) are less susceptible to late blight (The cause of the irish potato famine) AND C) have a reduced amount of acrylamide when fried (AKA Fries that won't increase cancer risk)

@@joaopedroleite8998 This is a wildly misinformed take. I’ve never been overweight, but I did consume an abundance of soda’s, low quality breads, low quality meats, etc. and I developed severe intestinal inflammation to the point that I needed some removed from me. After years of recovery and diet experiments it turns out I just needed to eat high quality meats, legumes, fruits, grains, and cooked vegetables in a balanced fashion, ya know, like how we are evolved to do. I experienced hell at the hands of these garbage foods. Maybe y’all are lucky and consume these foods with the only consequence being weight gain, but for some people like me it actively reduces the quality of our lives and can kill us through development of chronic illnesses.
