Alton Brown, host of the Food Network's "Good Eats," discusses the role of TV chefs and written recipes in learning how to cook, emphasizing the importance of one-on-one instruction. "I can quantify every little thing, but in the end, there is just the manual activity of cooking," he says. "And it is amazing how many ways there are to foul it up."

The creator/producer/host of the hit Food Network show "Good Eats," best-selling cookbook author and source of culinary wit and wisdom on "Iron Chef America," sits down to talk. Interviewed by Julia Moskin, New York Times food writer.

Very true about laughing brains being more absorbent. A recent TED talks video talks about how comedy can be effective in learning.

I don't like the fact that they're using a 5 minute clip to bring you to a pay per view site.

I think Alton has AIDS and isn't being honest about it. The changes in his face says it all. I have many friends that have died of AIDS and you can see the same look. He is getting spots on his face and using less lighting in some of his videos. I hope that I'm wrong but usually I can tell.
