How are the plots doing now?

I've learned to plant brassicas for their attraction during huntt8ng season, then over seeding with winter rye perhaps a month later, not conpeting with FP plants, but extending food into late zeason, and first spring b4 greenup.

Daniel, I am sure you have the young man on the right track. He has a nice-sized amount of land to play with, and I hope he has a ton of success. Where does he stand with his water sources? That might be something he can add as well (as you guys already know, but for the sake of some of the KZbinrs that might not). Man, the... deer flies...? were terrible. I hope that Redneck Blind helps keep those boogers at bay for him, or he's going to have some horrible hunts. lol

I would LOVE to see what his soil looks like down the road.

Prior timber harvest looks like a good clearing vs whats common in MI --leaving only the aged wolf trees, taking the best.

There’s a lot of work there. I’d use a skid and Clear most of that place. Many lanes with firebreaks. That floor seems typical of loggers leaving the rest after several years. Curious to see how this one pans out

Blends are great in theory and they they are great for people that are able to get and stay ahead of the weed / grass battle. Over the past couple years I have wasted a lot of $ trying to no till blends from Eagle seed and green cover seed. I have killed off all existing vegetation with appropriate herbicides only to have significant weed / grass competition once the the blend emerged. Right now i have several acres of RR corn and soybeans. It’s not as ideal as blend from soil building perspective but a monoculture is the only thing that allows me to get ahead of the undesirable seed battle.

I understand. Was the ground tilled? Was there a thick layer of duff from the fall crop in place when the summer crop was planted? I ask so I can understand. Thanks!

FINALLY! you are in MAINE. I have a very small food plot in Maine. Are you going to LIME and FERTILIZE his plots or are you just throwing the seed down? Are you getting a blend from GREENCOVER seed? Which one will you use if so? I am leaning towards the FALL BLEND because of my soil PH. It has improved from 4.5 last year to 5.8 this year. So I am not sure which Green Cover seed blend would be the most likely to do the best in my soil. Mostly all that grows there in the off-season is ferns. I will have to do all the seed sowing by hand or with a small ATV seed spreader. I have no money for the DRILL or Crimper at this time. I Love your show and hope to be improving my soil as well. Maine tends to have pretty acidic soil with all the softwood. God Bless and Good Hunting from Maine North Woods Hunter(KZbin)

For Liam's property, he'll be planting the Fall Release blend by Green Cover. Soils often vary property to property and a soil test is very important. We use Ward Labs for our Soil Test work.

I’ve been looking through a bunch of your videos but maybe you can point me in the right direction. I’m looking for videos on smaller plots of land compared to some of the properties you guys help manage I have 11 acres surround by other land owners and public land. Looking for videos to see what I should try to bring critters to my land over my neighbors and if it is worth managing when there’s 1000+ acres all around me If you have a video to point me to that would be awesome but, either way keep up the awesome videos I have been learning a lot watching you guys over that last few months when I first found the channel

Adam - we have helped many folks with smaller tracts - down to 4 acres. With small tracts, it is very important to identify the most limited resources in the neighborhood - is that food, cover, or water - during hunting season. Focusing on hunting season and the limited resource is key!

I have a dandelion weed problem but that's really the only weed in my clover cereal rye, winter wheat chicory. Would you worry about dandelions????
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
They will make many more dandelions.
@nhmountains5683 Жыл бұрын
Here in NH in the spring the dandelions are one of the first flowers available for the pollinators when they first emerge.

What is he going to do about TSI where all of those young volunteer trees are?
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
For this landowner's objective, we recommended mulching some shooting lanes. Fire is very rarely used in Maine - unfortunately. A big part of his project will be creating and expanding food plots.
