Action seems much like Dollar Tree/Dollar General in the US. Love the shopping and prices. Hoping the dollar keeps dropping until I get there in June, at least, when I can plop my cash savings into a French account. And the Movember donation worked this time!!!! They added the US options - yay! And also thanks for the tune info. Now I need to know the "goodnight" tune. I am going to have to use that on my first night in France after I move! We pay around £10 for a free range chicken from Aldi and about £12 to £14 for free range from our local farm shop. We used to pay around a fiver for fairly drinkable wine but now, post Brexit, we’re paying £8/9 for similar and this is only Aldi wine. If we shop at Waitrose it’s at least a tenner, less with special promotions. We used to spend around £120 per week on food with our two sons at home, these days we can’t keep track of it but it’s a lot more and we only have one son at home. We don’t eat meat every day as we like to eat lots of veg so have at least three veggie days every week. We’re not extravagant but do insist on high quality fresh food and don’t have much convenience food, maybe a Friday night curry but that’s it.

Look at Frugal Queen in France, she only buys when the discounts are on, in the new year, for instance there’s 35% off cleaning products, fish is cheapest on a Saturday (as the French eat fish on a Friday) and she gets the meat on the apps reductions30-35% off regular prices. If you have a look, you can gauge when the offers are on.

I meant to say you are right about buying single items as opposed to packs…..Ben noticed this sometime ago, also look out for those promotions with bigger box sizes, not always value for money. Thanks both for the discussion…..Clothes shopping is generally more expensive but over the years I have waited until the “soldes” and bargains can be made. Some of the supermarkets and local markets are getting better at selling modern, quality clothes. The whisky prices I have seen, in my experience is on a par with UK prices. The veg is cheaper when in season. We shop in Lidl/Aldi plus Super U (like Sainsbury) (approx€300)monthly to get the routine stuff we like. But, I keep a look out for the promotions like “Foire de Porc” in the supermarkets. I have a favourite butcher and it is expensive BUT I portion meat and freeze, this makes it more economical. For example, I buy a pork loin joint and cut it into chops. I mix sausage meat with steak haché ( make my own beef/ham burgers) The quality is very good. I also go to the local market once a month as there are seasonal variations (love the Tarn cherries)and just love the atmosphere/ambiance, and if I am lucky, Ben takes me out to lunch. Now that is good value. Menu du jour 15 euros each! Lisa is right it depends what you buy and like….. On the whole it is on par with the UK, but I need to point out I cook everything from fresh and my husband Ben grows a lot of fruit, salad, herbs and veg…….Cheese and Duck is a favourite in our house too! Shut up now Janet. 😂

Bonjour , Our culture for the food, he not to have some cauliflowers all year round but more it's the season of it. So, you have to rethinking the way to shop ! what fruits or vegetables during winter ,go to the market and not to the supermaket. Also, on the labels of the price, look the price per kilos or liters. It 's a obligation in France to write it down and for everything pasta, rice, yogourt and so one. And compares ! You'll be surprise ! For the clothes, look if you have a Kiabi shop they do also on line specialy for the kids, it's cheaper to Gémo. Sorry for my english ! I'll love yours vidéo. 😊

Some food products are still not overpriced, also if we compare it to the Netherlands we sometimes go. Yes to buy the 'hagelslag', 'rookworst' 😀 But i think it is a price increase in general all over the world. We are now a bit more settled to go shopping at local fresh markets. Also we want to try out our neighbours meat, its a farmer who has cattle. And, next to having our chickens upcoming spring, we also want to have meat chickens. But in general i guess we need to try to buy local so the price can stay as low as possible and goes directly to the farmer / producer. We really like that France can produce a lot! You have a large field of grass, good for meat chickens and rows of cauliflower 😀

@Escapetofrance-Charente 5 күн бұрын
@@HomesteadInFrance Wow, you travel along way for Dutch food. We need to do more market shopping for sure. It’s bound to be cheaper and fresher. Nooooo we could never raise chickens to eat. I know there is a lot of hypocrisy in that but we would grow to love them too much lol 👍🇫🇷

Hahahaha! There's a huge joke about the price of cauliflower on the ex-pats Facebook groups. I like JP Chenet red too. I think we spend about the same on our grocery shopping as we did in the UK, but we now have the time to cook fresh from scratch every day and I rarely throw food away. So no costly takeaways and ready meals. I don't mind paying a bit more for meat as we buy direct from farmers. The supermarket chicken in France has much more flavour, I think, than the horrible white, flabby, no flavour cheap chicken. We have learned to shop around and find deals. Construction materials are costly. I have bought clothes in France but I usually buy online from M&S France or Next France, or wait until I'm in UK. Sizes are small in France. I am also trying to wear out my old clothes. What's this "rot off"? Is that a northern saying? 😅

It is as you say, sometimes ones are cheaper other days 4 and 6 packs are cheaper. The same thing with cans, small cans tuna etc. Sometimes it is cheaper to get 2 small tins than one large. Chicken, if you buy packed 1 kg portions cuisses and blanc de poulet it is cheaper. But I agree food shopping is cheaper in UK but often the French have the edge on quality and availability. In France Dreamies are called Catalicious. This is most important. I like E.Leclerc but their fruit & veg isn’t great. There’s a great little fruit & veg shop opposite, next to the boulangerie. It’s much better and cheaper. French chicken actually has flavour, unlike British bland ones. French butter is fantastic - unlike the tasteless British butter. I ran out of my last Bretagne butter last week - there must be a market for Brittany butter here in the UK! By contrast, try getting double cream in France. For a region known for its’ cattle there is precious little meat there and it’s not great. The salads are great - peasants salad made fresh on site :) Even in Leclerc you see more different types of cheese than you see in a life time in the UK. The sea food is fantastic too. Cars and motorbikes are more expensive in France. Insurance about the same. House prices are dramatically cheaper in France. Council tax too. Girl Petrol is cheaper than water is in the UK. This is a good thing. Maybe. Every city, town & village in the UK has the same shops as every other city, town and village. In France the places retain their character and individuality. You can have a dozen oysters and a verre de vin in the Saturday market in La Roche for the price of a soggy Gregg s sausage roll in the UK (although I had a dozen and only three worked 😁). Plus you get to socialise with everyone else at the same time A big drawback of the Charente is the great distances between every where and every where else. Therefore, you spend a lot of money (and time) just getting about. On the other hand, my friends got the TGV from Angouleme to Paris last week to see the autumn lights and colours. It took just two hours and €80 and can be done on a day! Today I paid £95 for a builders bag of logs to burn for the winter. Logs from the Braconne are cheaper I think. On the whole, I think it is much easier to live in the Charente than anywhere in the UK. Life is easier there. Finally, don’t take your camera and film the lingerie section of the shop. Ask me how I know.

The quality of food in France is better so it is more expensive. Far more cases of obesity in England. 47% in France compared to 64% in England.

The last place we lived was America and the cost of living is way cheaper in france. Meat seems to be about the same, wine is a bargain, other food stuffs are marginally cheaper. Electric costs per kwh are almost double. Insurance costs are 1/4 of what the us was. Auto/home. Health insurance, i won't bother mentioning, because the us health insurance scheme is a joke. We're close to spain, close enough just to slip over for lunch. Prices there are almost laughable. 3 course lunch avec vin, 19 euro.

Regular commuters between UK and South Charente. France (food shopping) is considerably more expensive than the UK. We can even compare like for like Buckingham Lidl and Lidl Chalais which is 15-20% more expensive than the UK. This is not us trying to buy UK goods in France. This is your average bargain hunting supermarket shopping experience. Market stalls can be better value but still more expensive than the UK equivalent. Infact (wine, property and some cut wood apart) all goods one buys in France are more expensive than the UK. Don't even get me started on the price comparison of heating oil!

I have to say I am quite surprised that Chicken would be expensive. Chicken is probably the cheapest meat here in the states. Where I live it is probably a close tie with Pork, but that is likely not true everywhere in the States. Laterzzz!!!

I don’t think you can do all your shopping in one shop, I mostly use Netto, but with a few bits from SuperU. Pricing here is weird, it can be as cheap or even cheaper to buy small packets rather than one large one. Special offers can be tricky for example SuperU have one on Sodastream syrups, buy 2 get one free, but only on the ones that are 6€39, but not one at 5€99, Meat is expensive but buy it when it is on promo and freeze it. Buy it when on offer and not because you need it. Whisky is cheaper here than UK.

@Escapetofrance-Charente
