I'd go into more detail (already tried to), from an epidemiology and information systems design standpoint... but youtube shadowblocked the comment. Literally can't even talk about the underlying causes and mechanisms of problems like this here. In both cases though, the chicken and the blocked comment, the issue is that our information systems reward counterproductive things while punishing beneficial things.

As a teenager who was mainly raised by my grandma who watches the news 24/7 and barely has idea of what the internet is, I can't even describe how many of this fake/exaggerated stories the tv reports on have gotten me in trouble for doing absolutely nothing other than watching some youtubers that have nothing to do with those reports/"challenges". The actual fear it gave my grandma for my safety was tremendous every single time. And, of course, is never easy to explain to people that get their news from the tv that the news actually do lie to get people to watch it, is insane.

Someone said this same thing about the whole "eating tide pods" thing a couple years back until I showed them the statistics from Poison Control in 2018 and 2019 where nearly 11,000 adults contacted the service for help with Tide Pod consumption and over 4,000 adults were hospitalized in the U.S. alone for it. Bare in mind, this isn't including children or specifically teenagers, the ones who mainly partook in the challenge.

I completly agree with this because the news havent covered any of the serious challenges like the kiki challenge, the blackout challenge or the hot boiling water challenge that ACTUALLY hurt people and teenagers and have been fatal!(If you dont know what these challenges included here it is : The kiki challenge had teenagers jumping out of a moving car and dancing and then to get back in.This challenge was dangerous for obvious reasons and 1 teenager even fractioned her skull. Secondly, the blackout challenge wich based on the name itself screams danger. The challenge had people choking themselfs till you know they blackout and in some cases this challenge had been fatal for some. Lastly , the hot boiling water challenge had teens pouring hot boiling water on their sleeping friends. That can cause second or even third degree burns that can have an effect on your body for a long time.) And did the news ever cover that NO.

See, there was one class in college I took that centered around the news and how we should view them. In short, I think it was one of the best classes I’ve taken simply because we spent 10-12 weeks looking at news sources and stories on our own, and just actually reading and analyzing them. It was all about being aware of what exactly the news was saying, as well as checking their sources and the context that either the stories or sources emerged from. This video reminded me exactly why that class was important, and why it’s critical to look at the sources and context of EVERY news story. And this is just a personal opinion, but I feel like some outlets just want more attention by showing crazy stories. (A Scathing hot take, I know.)

Media has always been about "clickbait" since the very beginning. It's about getting views on whatever platform the media is on, newspapers, videos, live broadcasts, etc. The only difference now is that it has become increasingly easier to fact check these stories thus making it even more unacceptable for such shameless behavior in supposedly professional and trusted platforms.

Make newspapers started as mailing lists for political party members, then evolved into proper journalism. The pendulum has effectively swung back the other way, but with greater reach.

Let's be fair, here, though. The traditional media that MatPat talked about and showed in his video was entirely comedy pieces and Good Morning America daytime stuff. This wasn't real news discussing real events in detail, it was entirely entertainment stuff using "current events people are talking about". MatPat probably should've pointed out the difference in the video. Heck, I've seen some of those shows outright tell people not to use them as their main source of news, as they're meant for entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending this kind of stuff, but it is important to note that these shows aren't held to the same journalistic standard as real reporting, and we shouldn't lump the two together.

Yup, did a project last year about the media. It was for a darker topic but I ended up finding out how much the media loves fear mongering and making things worse. I didn't end up finishing and submitting the project because 1. it was lengthy and 2. didn't need it for my grade so it really helped during the heaviest part of the semester. But I felt a bit guilty about not finishing it. Thanks MatPat for bringing the media out about this.
