I grew up around Crouch End and Muswell Hill. Dunns is originally from Crouch End and I lived on the road across from them which had the famous kings head pub on the corner. I would wake up on a Saturday to the smell of freshly baked bread. Great memories. Toffs is legendary are there all the time. They do a killer grilled skate and the trad fish and chips is super. Nice to see it in your channel. Miss the area.

I went there Saturday. It was average. I’d say it was terrible but I had just come back from years living in the south west so I think it is an unfair comparison as fish and chips is a different level down there. But it was not a good chippie mate.

You went to two North London institutions in one review. Once you stepped into that bakery I instantly thought you should go to Dunn’s on Crouch End not knowing that Muswell Hill has one. Shows how long I’ve been living in America. You do need to go to one in Crouch End though. The selection is double of what you saw and you need to try their vanilla slice

Mates! This takes me to where I used to live in the smoke. I spent 3 years in Muswell Hill. It was the best place in London I ever lived. I've been to Toffs. Only once as it was $$$ It was good though, There again, I only go salt and vinegar, curry sauce or gravy is what you use at an iffy chippy. As I watched you walking around, I knew exactly where you were. You should have tried the Italian pizza place up the road to the roundabout and turn left. Il Fornio I think it's called. That was my stop on the way home from the pub.

I visited the highly rated Rock and Sole in London last week. It was very average. It was so busy I understood why the fish wasn’t cooked to order but the chips seemed as if they’d been there awhile. A regular fish was tiny and it was very wet. So the batter, which was nice, became soggy. Curry sauce was good. I’ll have to try toffs now.

I lived nearby in the early 90's and that was my regular chippie.Huge queues at the door on Fridays. Different owners but I'm sure it is still a great place for your regular fish and chips.

V C Jones in Whitstable is amazing... there's loads of other gaffs you can try aswell boys... mate... no mushy peas or gravy what's appnin there son Top reviews though me and the kuds enjoy the content. There’s a lot of truth in that but as fresh as the fish might be if the batter isn’t perfect and the right choice of oil and potatoes and obviously cooked to perfection it makes no odds where the fish and chips shop is ! But if it perfect and you eat them open sitting on a bench or in front of the sea then yeah London or any where can compete it’s a beautiful experience isn’t it

Looks great Fish n Chips. If you guys ever go to Cornwall go to The Three Pilchards in Polperro and try the fish n Chips, 10/10 is all I will say. Big, flakey fish in a Cider batter, excellent.

The assumption is that if your in reach of the seaside then your fish is caught in or near home waters and is provided fresh, Since the UK stopped buying from Russia, the price of fish has hit the roof. Fish now caught by Norwegian factory ships, processed at sea, frozen and boxed then sold to wholesalers in the UK. In the chippy, thawed out. If the fish is not dried off, you get wet fish under the batter, most have little taste. Always ask where the fish is caught. One of my local chippers could not tell me? I walked away., Your fish is sourced at Billingsgate Market. That’s why the fish is first rate. Your not in a London tourist area, and there are others but very expensive. To a point you get what you pay for. Spitalfields East London £21.45, and that’s only for F&C. I know you know the place.

Toffs are superb but Muswell Hill is a cnut to get to so I only went twice back in the early 00'ies. Best in London, for me, is the Seashell in Lisson Grove. Best in the UK is Colmans in South Shields. Great show by the way!

Used to go there regularly then moved out the area, was passing a few weeks ago and as there was a parking space I nipped in, wont buy again, the quality is not there anymore and as for the polystyrene container bring back the paper wrapping.

I have had mixed visits to this place. One day everything was perfect then on my last visit, thought the chips were pretty tasteless and hard and the batter on the fish was too thin. Also the sausage roll reviewed arent all that, try Dunnes

I was going to say this. Unlike the south west where the fish is always cooked to order, London chippies don’t it fresh. It makes a big difference.
