What's most interesting to me is how this slowly creeped in. 50 years ago we were a culture that took such pride in repairing what we owned, having the freedom to repair what we own, extending the natural life of our own property. It's not like someone flipped a switch and then magically, everything from cameras to medical equipment to agricultural devices and consumer electronics were all unfixable. It was a slow creep over time to the point that most people didn't even notice until past decade. Thank you for going over this that more people have an idea what is happening, so that hopefully we can reverse it together!

Right to repair is really, really important, especially when big companies like Apple are notoriously bad at fixing their own products, but your local small repair shop downtown which is a jack-of-all-trades can not only do it faster and cheaper more often than not, they may also treat you less like an idiot and more like an actual human being.

@bonkygaming55042 жыл бұрын
As someone who's worked at McDonald's for a few years, I can confirm that the shake machines were designed poorly. The most common reason for a shake machine to go down is the heat cycle failing. At the end of the cycle, the machine checks the mixture temperature, and if it's off by even 1 degree, it fails and locks itself up until next heat cycle is successful or is reset. Another reason for it to go down is if the machine is not brush cleaned (which is a pain to do). If not brushed cleaned, it'll go into freezer lock and won't work until cleaned, that's why we say "it's down for cleaning".

Same here in the Philippines, a country with a tropical climate. Climate that should make ice cream machines break. But I don't think I've ever been told that their ice cream isn't available because their machine is broken. And I think I know why: 1. The Philippines is much smaller than the United States. So if service technicians do have to go around and repair machines, their travel time between stores is much shorter. 2. The tropical climate means there's a strong demand for ice cream and other cold treats like milkshakes, pearl shakes and milk tea nearly all-year round. If McDonald's machines kept failing here as often as it does in the US, other international competitors like Dairy Queen and even local fast-food chains like Jolibee and Chowking would easily scoop up their market share. The demand is so strong that some branches have kiosks either integrated into the building or separate from it but still within their compound that only sell desserts where you could line up outside and get their cold fix quicker as opposed to going inside and waiting in line with everyone else dining in or ordering take-out.

i'm forced to counter argue this explanation, when i worked there the manager performed a deep clean once a week, and i don't have any explicit memory of it being down to be cleaned, except one time, which didn't even occur until the day before it was planned to be cleaned. i do, however remember telling a lot of people that the machine was down. the kicker is, we said it to everyone after 10pm, because it'd be shut off every day at that time. i think it was something about how it was better for the machine to be off than to be on all night, only being used a handful of times. and it made it easier on the crew since there were only a few of them at night. ****edited because i forgot to mention we always claimed it to be broken because there's no counter argument to that. if we said it was turned off, many people would expect us to turn it back on for them. but as crew, we don't get to make that decision.

A friend of mine used to work at a McDonald's and they always said that the machine cleans itself and they can't stop the cleaning cycle. So they always say it's "broken" because that's easier to say than "it's cleaning itself and we can't turn it off or stop it."
@brandon10301991 Жыл бұрын
Not really. Broken sounds like incompetence. Cleaning is just a natural machine cycle process. I would much rather hear cleaning than broken. At least you could come back when its done. Who knows when a "broken" machine will be fixed.

@@brandon10301991 The reason my friend told me normally they said it was broken was because when they said it was cleaning people would either immediately tell them to turn it off, which they couldn't, or would come back every few minutes or so to see if it had stopped cleaning and clog up lines. By no means is it a perfect solution. It's just what my friend told me her staff would all do to keep things running smoothly.

The other reason, at least in my experience from working for McDonalds, was either A. lazy workers/managers, or B. customers not understanding that the machine is on an automatic timer. A. I had a manager that refused to make shakes or ice cream, & would resort to telling customers that the machine was broken or being cleaned. After a while of having our sales drop, I retorted what was really going on, & that manager was fired for it. B. Every night, the machine automatically shuts off at 2 am for the heat cleaning. Occasionally, we would have customers that would refuse to take no as an answer, or understand that the machine was about to shut off. Unfortunately, if we're in the process of making ice cream or a shake the very second the machine shuts off, it'll lock up the machine & result in us having to call the machine specialist

As someone who works at McDonald’s 2023 in the UK I have noticed the main problem with the machine is these three things 1 people haven’t been taught how to use it probably and therefore the ice cream is often not chilled properly and therefore you get runny ice cream and milkshakes. 2 the machine is being cleaned/ refilled 3 the base product (the thing that makes Ice cream or milkshakes) has run out so u can’t make the ice cream Sometimes but I don’t see this as often is the toppings for the Ice cream has run out and therefore the ice cream has been taken off the till, so there is ice cream but not toppings to make them and there is no option to just sell plain ice cream so the ice cream just get taken off the till completely

@@kaldo_kaldo Most of the time, when you make ice cream at home, it's finished at a soft serve consistency, but it also melts very quickly. I usually make large batches and then firm them up in the freezer, which is what most home ice cream makers do. There are also specialized recipes that don't even need an ice cream maker, just whip the dairy to a whipped cream consistency before freezing. It's damned hard to keep the ice cream at a soft serve temperature, which is why those soft serve machines are so expensive. I've owned a few different ice cream makers, and if you're willing to make a small batch and eat it right after it's done, there's no reason you can't.

MCD manager here who has worked at several stores. The rate at which Taylor machines break is really dependant on the age of the machine. On average the machine is replaced once every 25 years, so in most cases the machine you see at a store has been there since the store was opened. Newer stores have the newest machines, and those usually break a lot less. A taylor mechanic comes in biweekly to clean and check if the machine needs a "tune up" or fix any issues.

I haven't and I don't work at McDonald's but my friends and my sister have and the reason that machine is broken is for the same reason the frappe machine is sometimes broken. The employees tell you that so they don't have to make them. They also do break down very rarely but maintenance is usually done in the machines overnight so it's good to go for morning shift and so on.

On top of the machine breaking down, the location I worked at had a regular cleaning day each week. The process of cleaning (emptying, cleaning, and waiting for the machine to chill the liquid ice cream to ice cream temperature) takes at least half a work day. For some reason, my store did this on Sunday, the one day a week where we could reliably count on families to roll in after church and ask for ice cream, who we would have to consistently disappoint because the machine wasn’t ready yet. 🤦♀️

As an Aussie, I’m very grateful the machines are never broken. But KFC got some explaining to do on why their slushie machines are broken…
@bearnicholas79992 жыл бұрын
Because of the product. Those machines are made a company called Cornelius (Same company as the Macca's ones) and they can only take about 4 mediums worth of drinks out before they need about 5 minutes to recharge (according to the manual). In this time, it takes warm water and room temp syrup and adds it to the barrel for freezing raising the temp so much that it all goes runny. Employees can't fix this unfortunately. Another contributing factor is the syrup itself. Macca's uses a VERY thin syrup that needs changing nearly twice a day (20 litre box) whereas KFC uses a rather thick syrup that (I think) doesn't need changing as much. Macca's also somewhat TRY to level the usage of the machines by having multiple whereas KFC normally only have 1 with a single barrel for each to Macca's 2+ barrels of coke. Flavours is a whole other can of worms.

As a former McDonald's employee, I was one of the few that cleaned the shake/ice cream machine. Taylor doesn't come out to clean the machine. One of the biggest reasons that the machine isn't working is from freezer lock. That is caused by someone not putting mix into the machine. At one of the restaurants that I worked at. I was given 6 to 8 hours for a thorough cleaning and reassembly. Sometimes the mix will start getting to hard and that will cause a mechanical breakdown inside the machine that only a technician is able to fix

Although this was interesting, I worked for McD's for a year and a half and I can attest to the machine always being broken out of pure laziness and miscommunication. No one ever wanted to use it and most times i would come into my shift, I was told it was broken and when I'd test it, the ice cream would come out fine. It was an on going joke in the store for the machine to be broken and a simple rumor from anyone it would deter the whole store from not using it, so people would make up the rumor often. Also the bags you're supposed to change, can take up to an hour to do and my managers would put it off for 3-4 days because they didn't feel like doing it, and without that bag change you can't use it.

Wow I've been working for 15 years at McDonald's the machine gets completely cleaned every two weeks plus if they didn't sale the milk would go bad in it so they do sell it depending on the age of the machine if they took massive order it messes with the quality of the product and no one wants runny ice cream
@jaylay29642 жыл бұрын
This makes no sense. No other fast food chain besides McDonalds has issues with their ice cream machines. So McD is the only company that has a huge failure in training? And that training failure is only with their ice cream machines? And this failure in training has coincided by chance with the introduction of this machine? Stop blaming employees for a company making a broken machine
@M3GPie2 жыл бұрын
I think some of that laziness depends on the individual store. Most McDonald’s around my area have very eager happy employees. A couple specific McDonald’s I’ve been to have slow lazy employees that can’t be bothered to give you sweet and sour. I worked at McDonalds and yes. The ice cream machine was always broken for us as well. But not for the things you’d think of. The 3 main reasons ours was down was 1. The machines operating system would just refuse to run until it was ready. 2. The machine needs to be cleaned every shift. Which was terrible depending on how busy you were. 3. People were too lazy to want to do anything about it. If the machine said it was down. Nobody blinked an eye. Which also ties into number 2.

an unfortunate but extremely obvious side effect of poorly thought-out minimum wage laws; companies have to require unskilled employees to do work they're unqualified for or just over work them in order to get their money's worth and avoid going into a financial hole that could drag the rest of the employees down with them. It used to be that if all you could do was sweep floors and clean tables; that was all you did and all you got paid for, but now; they're forced to pay you more than that work is worth you're either taking on additional responsibilities or you're just out of a job.

This is so true. That bag is actually the heaviest bag we have. And you can’t put it in the wrong slot or else the ice cream will come out wrong. @ankomitarashi-488 Жыл бұрын
Worked for mcd for several years. During that time, we maaaybe had to call out a tech ONCE to maintenance it. The main reason it ever went down, was either because the night/early morning crew forgot to do the heat cycle (yes, you can start it manually if it doesn't do it automatically), or because of it's automatic function to shut down for it's cleaning on a timed schedule. When it shut down for its cleaning schedule, you could not use it again until the ice cream base was drained and all the necessary parts were taken out of the machine. Once the main spiral in the machine is removed, a 5 minute timer counts down on the machine. During that time, you clean the parts, clean out the drums that hold the ice cream, and when the timer is done, you can put it back together, add the ice cream, and switch it back on. The whole process only takes about 20 minutes uninterrupted plus another 20 minutes or so for the machine and ice cream to be ready, but because of the amount of parts that need to come out and be put back, there is usually only 1 or 2 people that actually know how to do it/are trusted to do it properly. At the store I worked at, only 2 people knew how to clean the machine and both worked morning shifts, so if they weren't there when it was time for cleaning, there would be no ice cream until they worked again. Also, no matter what you told people, they would just declare it as 'broken'. Originally I would tell them it was down for cleaning, but then they would either ask how long it was going to take and get mad at the answer to that, or just say it was broken anyway. Sooo I just ended up telling people no ice cream, it's down lmao
