I sat next to Dave on a flight from Seattle to LA once. It was my first time flying alone, I was probably 12 or 13, and I was very nervous. At this point I had no clue who the Foo Fighters or Nirvana were, so I literally had no clue who he was. He could tell I was super uneasy, so he talked to me and was super reassuring, asking me my name and introducing himself, just generally being a really friendly guy. He talked about how he played music, but never mentioned the bands, and never really played up how famous he was. He helped me get my carryon out of the luggage compartment and told me to have a fun time as I was going to disneyland with my uncle who lived in irvine, and that was it. I saw a couple people ask him for a picture when we got off the plane, but I never realized who he was until a year or so later when I mentioned a "Dave" who played music and took some pictures with people to some friends who asked me if it was him, and it just blew my mind. Really, really genuine guy, and an experience I'll never forget.

It’s funny how we can take a song and it can mean something so different in our lives. The first time I heard this was on the hour long drive to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, after 3.5 years our daughter was having her final chemo. “Could anything ever be this good again” … hubby and I smiled while our daughter and our son (10 months younger than our girl) sang the Do do do's in the backseat. It was our victory song! That same little girl is a beautiful and brilliant 31 year old who's getting married in October (to a drummer 🤷🏼♀️😂), we'll have a family dance to “our song… Everlong 😊 thanks Dave ❤️!

Music has a way of helping us transcend the crap hand life gives us sometimes. The Foo Fighters (and Everlong) in particular is an incredible song and your husband loved you so much that he learned to play it for you. What an amazing gift. I too suffered a horrible loss to the love of my life - my high school sweetheart - my husband - the father of our 2 beautiful daughters - my best friend…to an illness. Time will pass and you might find that it hurts a little less, but this song will anchor you to him forever and your feelings will eventually become more melancholy than sad. It’s been nearly 6 years since our loss and I can finally listen to Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley’s version) without breaking down into a puddle of tears and find that feeling that bonded us to that song with a smile in my heart. As many times as I've listened to this song, mostly here on KZbin, I've never seen this video. I love the story behind one of my all time favorite songs. Also the original HD video is the first one that featured Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters even though through another video Dave Grohl explains that he actually recorded the drum track for it. i started playing drums when i was seven or so, i don’t play any other instrument. when dave explained how he perceives the lower strings as drums and the higher strings as cymbals, i realized that i would think of it the same way. i’m simply used to drum grooves and if i knew a few chords on the guitar, i’d probably played them like drum grooves. i think that’s why i feel oddly special especially about this song. damn, this man and his music is so inspiring

Hearing Dave's narrative was incredibly enlightening. I've been playing guitar since I was 17 and I never had lessons. Someone tells you to play a B-minor and I'm like, "uhhh." It always made me feel like I didn't belong here holding this instrument, that I wasn't a real musician, and that I was just pretending. However, when Dave Grohl says he can't read music... no one is challenging that he is a great musician. I'm 31 now and I've learned over many years that music doesn't have to be played skillfully to reach people. In a way, it means so much more knowing that any of us can do this without the need for years of music theory or lessons. As Dave himself said, "that's the great thing about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons." I've been playing for 14 years now and I still feel like I'm not qualified to play for people... maybe I'll finally start.

“You gotta promise not to stop when I say when” is my favorite lyric of all time. That one line can describe everything good and bad in life. It can be a great love that you can’t get enough of and also be a bad addiction that you can’t ever deny.

Some of the best songs we have in all these different types of music, it never ever fails that the greatest songs come from a moment. Like he said he was just strumming, and he had a moment where he realized, I could make something with this. And look at today. The man's a legend and the songs an absolute timeless classic that I'll be showing my grand kids one day. And people after I die will hear it and enjoy it. It's weird because all this music in the world. Yet the amount of people that can come together and know a single song is amazing.

It's so crazy how you can feel his soul and how genuine he is as a person. He is so content with life and knows he's given literally all he could hes lived a life some only dream, now singing this song he thinks about all the time that's passed and all the memories, now he's happy to live and have a family and throughout the process he's remained humble and still the same person he's always been. I strive to live a life like this, with or without the material items.

I am playing Everlong on the piano right now. I can read music and just started playing again after 20yrs of not having a piano. I was having so much trouble with the rhythm bc I have to play it so fast, and the way you described playing it on the drums and how you see it has tremendously helped me. I’ve never had a speech about music resonate so much in my soul. I cannot play a song unless I feel it in my bones. I have to be in the emotional mindset and play a song I love or you can’t hear it in my music or I’m bored with it. Music coming from raw emotion is the BEST MUSIC, and this is why Everlong is one of my favorite songs.

This song resonates so much to my heart. The love of my life was a Foos fan he had tickets to a show but unfortunately never got to go, and it was bitter sweet taking his ticket to see them. He proposed to me then was taken ill the next day, on my 24th birthday. He sadly passed away a month after, the day before his 24th birthday, before we got to marry. We joked about marrying at his bedside but I didn't realise how ill he was and unfortunately he didn't make it out to meet me down the aisle. This song reminds me so much of the amazing time we spent together and how much we both unconditionally loved one another. He had cystic fibrosis which is a genetic lung condition he was born with, so we lived each day to the fullest knowing one day he would leave me far too young. 'Breathe out, so I can breathe you in. Hold you in' relates so much as I would have shared my breath with him to ease his pain when he breathed. He had to have oxygen by the end and was in so much pain, it was awful to watch. I held him while he took his final breath. This song I played on the road to the hospital on his final day and I will forever remember the feeling of helplessness on my way, hoping he could have more time with me. 'Gotta promise not to stop when I say when' well I will never stop loving him even though he has gone. I have 2 beautiful children with my now fiancé and I love my family so much, we live a wonderful, happy life. But my love for him will never cease to exist. There goes my hero, he's ordinary🌹

Acoustics can rock too, Dave! EDIT: Thank you, guys! Dave is a HUGE inspiration to me! From Nirvana to all the Foo material, his music has affected my playing, all my life. But, I get the feeling that Dave likes to tone down his own songs for acoustic, and that's what he means. Which, is not good or bad, it's just his preference. :D
