Neil Murray, himself, was kind enough to leave a comment on the video.
Be sure to visit his channel and subscribe as he has plans to do some play-alongs/demos/lessons? of his own to some of the incredible bass-lines he's written.
Here's the link to his channel - / @neilmurraybass
“Fool For Your Loving” by Whitesnake off of their album, “Ready an' Willing” which came out in 1980 and featured Neil Murray on bass.
I often say, "I don’t take requests, but I will sometimes take suggestions." “windk100” left this comment on my “Street of Dreams” cover last week, “If you haven't already, do you have any plans to do a cover of Whitesnake's "Fool for your Loving"" - the original 1980 release? • Whitesnake - Fool For ... Thanks for considering it!”
I always try to check out the suggestions I get, but if a song doesn’t immediately grab my attention, I’ll pass on it. If I’m going to spend the amount of time that I do, learning the song and getting it to the point where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors, I have to really like it. Every so often the suggester strikes gold. When I clicked the link I immediately liked what I heard. It sounded like Bad Company on steroids to me…not that I’m a huge Bad Company fan, but there was something I really liked about the song…and the bass-line. It chugs. It walks. It’s got quick-twiddly bits. What’s not to like?
This version was recorded by the earlier version of the band which featured 3 former members of Deep Purple.. The Whitesnake I’m most familiar with is the 1987, super-group version which I was not a big fan of. You know…the Tawny Kitaen writhing on a car hood and the Rudy Sarzo licking his bass neck Whitesnake? (not that I’m knocking Rudy Sarzo, I think he’s great, especially on Ozzy’s live “Speak of the Devil” album) That, later, version of the band might not have been the catalyst for the whole “hair-band” movement, but they certainly gave it a big push forward.
The bass-line has some very quick, articulate and tasteful fills that I’d associate more with prog-rock or jazz than I would a fairly straight forward rock song. Each pre-chorus and chorus is played slightly differently which took a bit of memorization. As I was listening to the song, I’d note each tricky lick and think, “Well, that’s going to take a bit of effort.” and it did.
- The riffs at 3:04 and 3:11 are very close to what he is playing rhythmically, but I changed a few of the notes to something I was more comfortable with in order to make the riffs a bit more clam proof (it really sucks to make a mistake that close to the end of the song).
- Also, at 3:15, I’m pretty sure that he played both the high, fretted D along with the open D as I did. It just doesn’t sound as clunky as when he did it.
- The two notes that follow the D-Octaves were inaudible (on what I’m listening to it on, anyway) but I figured, since he was moving up the fretboard, so would I, to complete the line.
- I’m not sure, but something makes me think that he’s playing a fretless on this song. I don’t know if that’s something he was known for.
- As the song neared the end I heard those quick rakes and was like, “Really? You couldn’t just lay back a little and take it easy during the fade out?”
I’m playing the first Guild bass that I got a few years back. It started it’s life as a fretted B-302A (the “A” is for “Ash”). It had been converted to a fretless when I bought it and I had frets reinstalled not long after I got it. It was also a 2-Pickup model which, like my Ric, I did not care for, so I had the neck p/u removed and had a new pick guard made by a company called “Chandler” which has templates for just about any guitar or bass you can imagine, even some real oddballs. I ordered a B-302 guard but asked them not to cut out an opening for the neck p/u.
Here’s a link to their site - www.pickguards.us
The bass also has a Babicz 3 Point replacement bridge as well as a Zero-Mod Thumb-rest.

Good work Troy! One day I'll put up my own video, though it's very hard to play the whole song straight through 100% as I did on the album. Some of the comments are gratifying, some are annoying - one thing I'll say is that in those days the producer, Martin Birch (Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and many others), wasn't a dictator as some are, more someone who would let the band members do their thing. (For those who prefer Still Of The Night-era Whitesnake, FYI it was me on that album too, not Rudy Sarzo).

Wow! Thank you so much for honoring this thread with your presence. That is an incredible bass-line you composed and it was a real challenge to figure out, memorize, and play to. Of course, I needed to cut a few corners here and there. I'll be sure to subscribe to your channel to be sure to catch that video when you post it. And I'll be sure to list your channel in the info section beneath the video. I truly hope the gratifying comments far outnumbered the annoying ones. If the annoying comments had to do with any critique of the "Still of the Night/Sarzo credited" version, I'd venture to say that "that" version's bass-line was just far more sanitized, homogenized, and commercialized than the version I covered. But, as you said, that's what some producers do. This bass-line has a real edge to it...a spontaneity and controlled chaos. You just don't hear bass-lines like these being written and recorded these days, or sitting so prominently in the mix either. Were you credited on the liner notes of the album? Wikipedia listed Sarzo. Shame about that if that is the case. Can I ask, did you play a fretless on it? There are a few parts that made me think that you did. Again, thank you so much for your comment.

Thanks for the kind comments Troy! I was made aware of your video by a thread discussing Fool For Your Loving on the UK set Basschat.co.uk. To clarify: I didn't mean that I played on the remake of Fool on Slip Of The Tongue (though I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Vai had played all the bass as well as the guitars on that album) but that although Rudy Sarzo is in the videos for the 1987 'Whitesnake' album, I play bass on the actual recordings - many people who only discovered Whitesnake in 1987 don't seem aware of that. I previously recorded (audio only) a note-for-note bass track for Fool, with just sampled drums, but that took many drop-ins and retakes - it's very hard to play the whole thing through without deviating, and when I play the song live it's never exactly like the original. Sorry if people think it's too busy - tough!

The most faithful playing of one of Whitesnake's best bass lines. I've always liked Murray's style. Also, I have to say that you have a great feeling playing. It shows that you like what you play and not only limit yourself to imitating what is recorded.

As someone that restarted playing recently after not playing bass in years thanks to university, professional exams and postgrad studies, this is the kind of bass line that motivates me. Beautiful, tricky, requires a lot of practice... But if someone can play it, I can play it too, and I'll keep practicing until I finally can play along with you in the video. Thanks for sharing your amazing job!!!!

I am not a Whitesnake fan but I was aware that they were a legit hard rock group proceeding the aforementioned hit from the late 80s. And I stress the word ‘aware’, because I certainly never did seek out any of the material to confirm. This is pretty much what I figured it would sound like, and it isn’t bad at all. But the bass - whoa. Now that is unexpected. What a great groove the whole song has. I agree with your ‘couldn’t you just sit back’ sentiment toward the bassist. As I said on another one of your videos, I’m almost surprised a producer didn’t try to reel the guy in. Not that it isn’t awesome it it almost seems more appropriate for bass nerds than your standard listening audience for this kind of thing. Great cover! Thank you!

Based on my opinion of the Super-Group version of the band I never considered going back and checking out their earlier catalog. I wish I had. I agree, this is a fantastic bass song. I was thinking the exact thing you were, about a producer just picking all the cool bits out of Neil's bass-line and just leaving the skeletal core in its place. Either the producer was asleep at the wheel or he recognized the greatness the bass player was putting forward. Thanks a lot!

A video like that would be tedious for all of us. I take a couple of different approaches and each song dictates the way it is going to go. Sometimes I'll learn my way around the difficult parts and then go back and fill in the blanks. In this case I, for the most part, learned the song sequentially, meaning that I would not move on to the next part of the song until I'd grasped the part before it. For some reason, I found the intro challenging which meant that I played it around 100x...haha. It felt like 100x anyway. With some songs I will blend both of these processes.

I guess it is, isn't it? I may appear relaxed on the outside, but there's a lot of tension going on within. It takes many hours of practice and repetition to get the songs to this point - where I can play them through without making and glaring errors. I could probably make my life a lot easier if I learned to edit the audio and video, but that seems like more of a headache than how I am doing it now. As far as my "sound and balance", it is, for the most part, dumb luck. I just set the level of my bass just above the bass on the recording and press "record". I don't tailor my sound to the recording and that's why some come out sounding better that others. Thanks so much for the very kind words.

@@TJH3113 Hi Troy....i've been asked to play this with a band im messing around with and will study your work here.Can i ask what is the procedure you go through from scratch.Do you listen to the original first or go through loads of live gig footage to get the spirit of the song.I mean some of the subtle bass lines you have added to this is better than the original in my eyes...no offence Mr Murray.Does it take days or weeks?.Your attention to detail is renowned and respected on many bass forums....i know you'll hate me mentioning that ha!. Thanks for sharing your work once again.

Hello Jon. Thanks for the tough question. I'll try to answer it the best that I can. Every song I sit down to learn takes its own path. Even if I think I am going to approach it a certain way, often I am wrong. There are essentially 3 approaches I take when learning a song. 1. Learn it note for note from beginning to end. Proceeding no further than the point to which I've learned every note and phrasing. Mind you, I said "learned", not mastered. 2. Learn the general structure and main elements of the song and then go back and fill in all the details. 3. Some combination of 1 and 2. I will never look at live footage. For what I do on my channel I'm only interested in the bass line as it was recorded. Most guys go way off script on the live versions. My philosophy has always been, "If a song sounds great, it's because the player/s played certain notes, in certain sequences." If I am going to try on Superman's cape, I'm not going to alter it in any way by changing its color or length or whatever. A guitarist I played with for many years when I was younger had a similar philosophy and it was not a good time for some of the people we played with in cover bands, I am sure. I understand that this is not the only way to approach learning someone else's bass-lines. It's just the way I've always done it. As far as learning stuff to play live, it might be a bit of a waste to pay so close attention to such minute detail. 00.01% of the audience will ever notice or appreciate it. I have a playlist titled, "Learned For Live" where I address this. While I appreciate the compliment about the subtle changes I add, those are only the result of my failure to capture exactly what was happening on the recording. As much time an effort as I put into learning these song, I am not perfect and they are still only my interpretations of what I am hearing. I would never be so arrogant as to think that I might actually improve upon any of the bass lines I've covered by altering them in any way. Often, if I do make some sort of change, I will note it in the text beneath the video. Though perfection is what I strive for with my covers, I would be the first to say that I am not perfect. Some songs take days, some take weeks, and some take months. Learning them is one thing, getting them to the point where I can play them all the way through without making any glaring errors is another. If a particular player's style is more in line with my own, things go a bit quicker. If the style or genre is a bit more alien to mine, then time is added. Years ago, I did a cover of "King Henry's Madrigal" and I actually kept a diary of how long I spent on learning and rehearsing the song. I forget how long it took, but I was surprised because it seem much shorter that it should have. It was a tough piece. Maybe I should do something like that again. The "Bouree" cover took well over a month and was, one of a very few, that I almost gave up on. Another really tough one was "Nantucket Sleighride" by Mountain, but that wasn't so much a case of difficulty, as it was a case of differing playing styles.

While reading through the comments section of the Whitesnake song I noticed that a _lot_ of other people were also impressed by Neil Murray's fantastic playing. And that sound! It's really distinct with that growl, and it stands out nicely in the mix. So he obviously did something right that stood the test of time, and that's probably an understatement. We all have our preferences and, while my MusicMan doesn't get much play time, I still think it's one of my best built basses (though, because it's a 5 string, it lacks the "toilet seat pick-guard"). One thing that I really do like about MusicMan basses is their distinctive look. When you see one, you immediately know what it is. As for the Guild bass, I'd never call it a "nice looking bass". I like its quirky appearance. Back to MusicMan for a moment...I find it amazing that Leo Fender could, essentially, invent the electric bass, go on to create another 2 different companies, and still come up with somewhat unique designs for his instruments. Why is it that 90% of the other bass makers have difficulty coming up with something that really sets itself apart in appearance from a Precision or a Jazz Bass?
@RoadKing-ky2bs
@RoadKing-ky2bs 5 жыл бұрын
@@TJH3113 you are spot on about Leo's iconic design that most everyone idolizes and copies in some degree or another. Personally for me I love Fender as that was my first bass I bought in 1979: a 1967 Jazz. I have the Jazz Elite V I purchased last year and I love it. My second favorite is the Music Man Stingray. Again, it has the classic styling of Leo's designs following the Fender line. Then a very close third is the Rickenbacker, although I never owned one. Well, there are so many good basses out there nowadays that it is hard to go wrong, even a sub $500 budget bass like Squire and Ibanez are completely gig level ready if that is all one can afford.

@TJH3113
@TJH3113 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that was really cool of him to chime in on a thread that was getting out of control. He made some really interesting points in his comments - "I can see I'll have to do a note-for-note demonstration! Although when I've played it in the last 15 years, I've tried to stick to the recorded version, when I recorded the song the fills were just improvised, so on another take they would have been different. If it's played too fast, which is often the case, some of the fills become impossible to play properly, which is frustrating. Although I am not an expert jazz, blues or funk player, I had enough of those influences to bring some of that to my rock playing, particularly in 1978-82 Whitesnake, as the songs allowed for interesting bass parts. When the songs don't permit that style of playing, which is mostly the case, I have to be more straight-ahead. Neil"

Hey Troy, not long ago you replied let you know if you can be of any help. Well here's something I've been thinking for a while. What scales, patterns, etc do you recommend for helping learn a song like this and other walking bass lines, such as James Jamerson on I Was Made to Love Her? I'm getting better at moving up on the neck to hit octaves and slides. Sometimes I can get in the groove and it seems like second nature but often it just doesn't feel very natural to move to different neck positions. I do better with songs that are very repetitive and stay mostly in the same position such as Billie Jean and Caribbean Queen (I love it). Thanks for any tips!

Hello. I'm sorry, but I am, essentially, musically illiterate, especially when it comes to walking bass-lines. I am able to figure out what someone else has played, but I'm just imitating what they have done. Honestly, I couldn't write a walking bass-line if my life depended on it and it's one of the reasons you'll probably never hear me cover a James Jamerson song. My "Heaven On Their Minds" cover was a real labor of love... essentially a walking rock bass-line with endless variations... this one too. There may be a few things I might be able to help you out with, but this isn't one of them. Thanks and take care!

@@TJH3113 I'm essentially the same. I prefer to play by ear and figure out things that way but sometimes it's frustrating. I'm trying to pick up on common patterns. When I started on the guitar a long long time ago, I kept on seeing tips about the Blues pentatonic scale, which I assume can essentially be applied to a lot of Rock, R&B, classic pop music bass lines. Can definitely hear and see it on Cream's Sunshine of Your Love. If I learn more, I'll let you know, Troy. Thanks! Kyle

I understand what you're saying but I'm pretty comfortable this way. It's not terribly far off from the position I'd be playing in if I were standing. Are you referring to my left/fretting hand position? As you can see, I go to great lengths to make sure that my right wrist is not bent too severely by raising my arm at the shoulder. It may look tiring but it is really just second nature at this point.

I'm pretty sure he has another account so he's always able to give me, at least, two thumbs-down (and his own post, at least, two thumbs-up). He really brought out the worst in me one day a few years back on Facebook and he has blocked me...can you imagine? Someone blocking "me"? Anyway, it appears as if he's off his medication and is trying to verbalize his dislike for me and my playing. I could have easily put a stop to the "thumbs-down" thing by blocking him, but who am I to stifle another person's voice...or thumbs-down? If things go as normal, he will start attacking those who came to my defense, at which time I will most likely block him. This bass has a slightly deeper, woodier tone than the other Guilds for some reason. Possibly the Ash body? Or the new frets? This has the same strings I have on nearly all my basses, D'Addario EXL220's

Don't feel bad, I hadn't heard this version before last week either. What excited me about this bass line? It was a combination of the bass line and the song. The way the song started got me interested...like I said, "...Bad Company on steroids". It just had a cool hook and sound. Then his voice came in and, while I'm not a big fan, I think that Coverdale has an iconic Rock voice, not unlike Paul Rogers. Then, the bass started branching out, walking off, and playing some really melodic lines and tricky riffs. After that, I was hooked.
