This is so mid-70s funky, with that porno soundtrack wah-wah guitar and cowbell funk beat. It's good!

Stewart obviously and ultimately filled up his emptiness

a lot of the Police's early songs were written in the last exit days. The Bed's Too Big Without You was written when he was still in Newcastle and married to Frances Tomlety

Too bad he didn't salvage this song (with different, non 'So Lonely' lyrics) for later on in his career. It's really good tune and deserved more than the obscurity it's in now
@Old-Skull.2 жыл бұрын
the thing is that this song is an earlier record of what finally we know as so lonely , its clear that this song was unfinished but you have the structure of so lonely ,and im not talking about lyrics if not music too , they just simplified the sound , change tempo and rythm , a song is something that is never finished it change with the times and mood of the musician who creates it , that is why you hear that famous musicians get bored and annoyed to play their most successful tune over and over , and sometimes they try to change it when they pley it live or simply dont play it at all remember they tried to create police as a punk band when they really were this , that is why they get these songs and make them audible for the punk scene of those days , sometimes even they got bosanova songs , and there is no way to convert that in punk , what they did , turn it into reggae and that was their recipe for succes cause while punk died quickly some kids like me just hallucinate with this new sound of this amazing group

Tastes are different - one comment below preferred this version of the first song. I so much more prefer the Police version over this one. Listening to this ... Sting is so lucky that Stewart Copeland found him and recruited him away.

This sounds like a version he would have performed after he left the Police.Not bad,but a boring arrangement.Imagine going to see him in concert expecting/wanting to hear The Police version and getting this.

Gerry Richardson played on a Sting song from his 1996 balbum. But Im assuming everyone else from the band just did music parttime afterwrds or just quit

There's also a hint of "Come Down in Time" The Elton John song Sting sang on his album Two Rooms.

With some additional string arrangement, it could have been a disco hit.

Sting has never surpassed the acheivements with The Police mainly because, as can be heard here, he is very self-indulgent. Stu and Andy reigned him in all the time and got the best out of his songwriting.

Sting has only surpassed 'The Police '. Read his autobiography.

Is Sting channeling some 1970s Van Morrison here? In any case, this is a pretty awesome obscurity!

It all makes sense when Sting says that The Police went in a decidedly punk direction in the beginning. This version could be Air Supply.

Well someone told me yesterday That when you throw your love away You act as if you just don't care and look as if you're going somewhere But I just can't convince myself I couldn't live with no one else And I can only play that part And sit and nurse my broken heart I was a fool in love Too proud to learn my lesson Hoping you'ld alwayes stayed but i wasted my time away Somebody please Fill up my emptiness Vanish my loneliness Show me some tenderness and the warmth of your sweet caress Now no one's knocked upon my door For a thousand years or more All made up and nowhere to go Welcome to this one man show Just take a seat they're always free No surprise no mystery In this theatre that I call my soul I always play the starring role Im a fool in love Too proud to learn my lesson Hoping you'ld alwayes stayed but i wasted my time away Somebody please Fill up my emptiness Vanish my loneliness Show me some tenderness and the warmth of your sweet caress Now no one's knocked upon my door For a thousand years or more All made up and nowhere to go Welcome to this one man show Just take a seat they're always free No surprise no mystery In this theatre that I call my soul I always play the starring role I was a fool in love Too proud to learn my lesson Hoping you'ld alwayes stayed but i wasted my time away Somebody please Fill up my emptiness Vanish my loneliness Show me some tendernes and the warmth of your sweet caress Somebody please Fill up my emptiness Vanish my loneliness Show me some tenderness and the warmth of your sweet caress

What this shows, is just how much more credit Stewart deserves than what he gets for the style of The Police. Sounds like the Doobie Brothers or Billy Joel doing disco. The kind of middlebrow, easy listening pop Sting slid back towards when he went solo. This was going nowhere.
@Fearzero3 жыл бұрын
Yup not a fan of his solo work.

Listen to Klark Kent for more evidence of that! It's all Stewart Copeland playing all instruments and singing, it's basically the Police!

Are you high? This shows that Sting had the verses to "So Lonely" already completed prior to joining the Police. At the minimum, it illustrates Stings song writing process. It has zero to do with Copeland whatsoever...

Not hard to hear Stings potential here. Easy to see why Stewart wanted him, and then why Andy thought Sting and Stewart had so much potential. Good 70s disco. 👍
