Fool Us Revealed - Season 7 Penn and Teller | Card Magic from Shawn Farquhar

Here is my own interpretation of how this great trick involving cards and books is done. Shawn Farquhar, one of the best magicians around today tries to fool Penn & Teller on the show that challenges viewers to work out "how did they do that"!
My personal suggestion of how this trick is done may not necessarily be how it's ACTUALLY done, but it does seem plausible to me! Unless you know different?

What a great analysis of the trick - thank you. I agree that Shawn is an expert card manipulator, so if anyone who isn't quite as great at manipulating the cards wants to try to perform the trick, here is an idea: Take the Jack of Diamonds, Eight of Hearts and Five of Spades from another deck, then add them to the bottom of the first deck that you use. When you display the cards in 'New Deck Order', don't get as far as the bottom few cards. When you riffle shuffle the cards, make sure those three cards stay at the top of the pile. Then, when your volunteer starts dealing the cards, those will be the first three cards that they deal.

Penn does use the terminology at the end saying "flap" as a key word to the trick. So you definitely got that right. You're good. This had me stumped

When I watched the video of him doing this trick, it looked to me that he says "five" just a split second before flipping and revealing it. It's not much, but it seemed to me he says it too quickly to have actually seen what card it is. Still an awesome trick, and awesome performer.

How do you get the person signing it to not realize they're signing the cellophane? Or do you have them sign the box and then somehow wrap it quickly?

You can classic pass or Herman pass the bottom 3 invisibly. Love that force. Also reverse engineered it the same way due to the “you won’t give us any flap” comment. Pegasus I didn’t understand initially but Shawn DM’d me and mentioned flap of the book, or wings which is how the book gimmick looks. Great job! And Shawn really did highlight my comment and messaged me. I’ve been doing the effect from his first appearance for a while and it’s a show stopper! You’re spot on with everything including how good Shawn is. He didn’t win the world championship of card magic for nothing!

The move he does with the Jack , 5 and 8 is called a spread pass. I have a video of Shawn teaching the spread pass for an ACAAN effect I purchased off of him. Really nice move, but will take a little practice to make it look awesome.

Beautifully explained. The only thing I dont get: Why did he let Alison sign on the cellophane? That was a dangerous move, because in this moment she could have recognized there is something wrong. And Penn and Teller probably have seen it because of the shimmering light when he presented it. I guess in this moment they got him. Of course I only recognized this after your video, but once you know it you can see the cellophane in the close up pretty easy.

The main thing I have with your theory is that having a ripped page 85 and handing ot to Allison is kinda risky. I think he used two books and that's why he was okay with handing over the book

@@totallymagic Initially he opened to page 85 by himself before handing the book to Allison to confirm the longest word. So I think using one book is still pretty good because he knows Penn and Teller could easily guess a book switch.

You forget during the whole routine he was doing rapid fire jokes and switching back and forth between the cards and book, she could easily have missed the fact it was a gimmick book.

Several things are completely wrong in this attempt of an explanation. 1.- Shawn said himself that he didn't force Alyson's card, it was indeed a free choice 2.- He gave her the book and let her find the page 85, if he was using a book with a fake page 85 she would notice it easily 3.- Alyson gets to sign the deck and when Shawn reveals that is has been sealed again, her signature is under the plastic In the original version of the card trick he performed on FOOL US (the first time he foolead Penn and Teller) he even asked Penn to sign the card and in the sealed deck Penn's card indeed had his signature so it wasn't a duplicate deck because if it was already sealed (and Penn checked every inch of the box) there is no way Shawn could insert Penn's signed card inside. Now if he can do that there is no sense on thinking he would need a duplicate resealed deck to perform this trick... In over all i think you couldn't be more far away from the actual method he used even if you tried... No ofense intended, just pointing out that this doesn't seem to be how he did it at all...

He insert Penns card in the buttom where the cellofan is open and the card can slide in to the right place, then he push on the cellofan to seal it.

I thought he had her sign the cellophane free pack of cards before he had her cover her hand. Then when he did the reveal in her hand the pack of cards had the cellophane wrapper on it and was sealed, but the box was signed underneath the cellophane.

I asked Shawn directly about moving the three cards to the top, and he claimed he did not do that. So, I'm not sure if you've figured out the method Shawn used or not, but you still came up with a good method to accomplish this effect.

I think your right, Shawn I'm sure did it differently, the guys handling skills are second to none. But I had fun having a guess. I still think his performance on an earlier show whereby he gets a signed card back in to the sealed box has to be one of the greatest magical effects ever shown on TV, just brilliant!

@@totallymagic I do love that trick a lot. Oh, I'll also add he said he can't do a faro shuffle. He actually claims to not be great at handling cards, though I'm sure he's still better than most people. When it comes to card handling, I get most amazed by both of Kostya Kimlat's performances. Here's what I've learned about Shawn Farquhar's tricks though; you can come up with really good guesses on how their done, and even come up with methods to do the trick exactly how he did it, and he'll come back and perform the trick again in a way just different enough to prove to you that you don't have a clue. He's a mad lad. This is the first video of yours I've seen. I'll definitely be going through and having a look at the rest of your stuff now!

How about doing the chameleon cards trick soon, the one where the cards flip each time and then at the end they all have different colour backs?

would someone really have the dexterity to put the wrapper materials back on a deck to look 100% legit while working other aspects of the trick? i recall on the show when he did a slightly different version of the trick, he said it wasnt his technically most difficult trick... if thats the case, and it seems like it would require an exorbitant amount of technical skill to do it this way, then i dont see how thats the technique. but i have no idea

Unless Alyson just didn’t notice that the gimmicked deck wrapped in cellophane than how does that work? Unless the back doesn’t have cellophane on it maybe? Good analysis though just not sure about that part of it.

ok so the only thing i dont think i agree with is the way you structured the books. he had two books on stage with him. Your theory would be far to risky when allison handled the book if she made a mistake and flipped to the pre ripped part it would ruin the trick. I would assume he had two books one ripped with the Jof diamonds already in it and one completely normal book because he did put the book away after allison handled it so thats an easy switch. Also im assuming allison played some disbalief but that end of trick box would not be examinable nor would it have allisons signature based on your theory. Which makes sence as he did not show that allisons signature was on it. Amazing video though!

I'm pretty sure the plastic wrap can tear off on just the end, leaving most of the box covered there's that lil tab and string of thicker plastic, and if he's the one opening it, he can make sure to leave most of the plastic on

Thank you for this. People should understand that this is your THEORY. It's a well thought theory, but a theory nonetheless. So it's not a reveal or spoiler. I think the one thing that got Penn and Teller the first time was the cellophane. I know it's easy to get at a magic store as you said, but how did he seal it in front of everyone? When Alison signs the box you can see that the cellophane is already on there, so she knew she was signing a partially sealed box (before he pulled the fake flap off). She had to suspend some disbelief.

Another thing that people should know is, that he might be reveal theories or techniques that are currently sold. One example is about the pegasus hint penn spoke about. (Its the same as talking about the plot, murderer and motive of a crime case versus only talking about the setting and apperance of a murder [One is a complet reveal of the book and the other is a review to get you interessted]) About the Cellophane, you only see it for a few seconds after he called Alison over, He opens the deck of cards and the cellophane is only removed on the top part.

You can keep the cellophane on an already opened box, just like people do with with cigarette packs. I haven't seen the original video recently, but if he kept the cellophane on the first box after opening it, she wouldn't know the difference.

I must congratulate you on for your breakdown and demonstration of the methods used to perform this magic trick. Your presentation was very clear and the combination of imagery and visual aids clearly demonstrated what was very possible the methods used by Shawn when performing the magic trick. I'm sorry if this sounds pedantic but I believe it is an important point. You may have noticed I used the phrase 'magic trick' twice in the paragraph above. More than once in your demonstration you say words to the effect that 'real magic' was not used. I find this very strange from someone who I assume calls themself a magician. A simple Google search gives the following definitions of magic; 1. The power of apparently influencing event by mysterious or supernatural forces. 2. (abjective) wonderful, exciting. 3.(verb) move change or create by or as if by magic. I am sure most adults are aware that magic tricks are not performed by some God like deity who has the power to perform actual miracles. It may seem trivial, but when we watch a magician or go to a magic show, we know we are not witnessing miracles, and I'm not sure they are possible in any case but that is another discussion. I'm sorry I had to make this point but it detracted from what was otherwise a first class demonstration.

Yes she did write on the cellophane. If you remember, Shawn only ripped the top part of cellophane off.

he used magicians choice to force picture cards and after that it was free choice. now he only need 12 decks and those 12 decks were in that wooden box. he pulls out the deck with king of club/spade i dont remember and then while explaining the trick to audience someone comes and take that box away from the stage.

i don't get it. Wouldn't the person see you gave them the wrong page number? Wouldn't they notice they're signing a wrapped deck instead of an opened one? Wouldn't the person handling the book accidentally make the card drop out of it? If that's how he did it, it's one hell of a lot of risk and relying on the person's blindness, especially considering they already know the punchlines

I still don't get this stuff with 84-85 glued pages. How could Alison don't recognise a fake page? It's impossible. The page was torn out and put into a deck of cards so it couldn't be glued anywhere. My guess is it would be much easier just to switch the books. For the first time, it was just an ordinary book, Alison looked into it, Shawn swapped the book, and the second book was the one Shawn tampered with.

I've seen several shows where it is clear that Alison is allowed to be a true magician's assistant, meaning she's in on the trick. If you run the trick in slow motion, you can see the glare of the shrink wrap as he turns the deck to the audience after she signs it. Thus, she cannot be as shocked as she seems to be when he tells her that the deck is resealed. Most likely, the deck was already signed before the act started. She moved the pen, but made no marks.

Things got ambiguous when discussing the two books. It would have been clearer if you had both books on the table and physically demonstrated from which a page was torn and to which it was glued and in which the card is placed. I mean, I got it in the end, but this set up could have been explained with more clarity in that moment. Just constructive feedback. Thank you for the theory explanation.

First time here and not the last. A 100 times you, before 1 time Shawn. I don't watch revealing videos. I came here for Shawn gets on my nerves for using this thing to build superiority of intelligence over all. Be honest, the whole trick is a arrogant, as well the execution. Shawn has said it was done. It's a lot less complicated than your method. You kinda build unnecessary hurdles for yourself. I understand this video is 2 years old and you have already see the way he did it. But I'm gonna leave this comment here so any young performers read it then hopfully they'll figure out simple ways to perform complex tricks.
