Have you ever used a hydrocolloid blister dressing? You know, those yellow, gummy kind of blister dressings, like Compeed? I bet you’ve made one of these three common mistakes - I see people make them all the time.
Learn more here:
👉 How To Use Hydrocolloid Blister Plasters Properly: www.blister-prevention.com/pr...
👉 This Is What The Hydrocolloid White Gel Bubble Looks Like:
www.blister-prevention.com/hy...
0:00 - Start
So in this video, I’m going to show you what these mistakes are:
👍 So you can start using Compeed properly
👍 And so you stop making your blisters worse
0:26 - Other hydrocolloid dressings
Now, when I say Compeed, I actually mean any hydrocolloid dressing. Compeed, Comfeel, Duoderm and Bandaid Advanced healing - they’re all hydrocolloids. They’re kind of a yellow gummy material. They come in lots of shapes and sizes, and they’re very adhesive.
0:44 - Good and bad
Now I love hydrocolloids. They’re brilliant at getting a certain kind of blister to heal faster. But for the rest, they’re bad news. Now that’s not the dressings fault. It’s our fault for not using it properly. Let me show you what these mistakes are now, so you can avoid them, as of today.
1:05 - Mistake Number 1
is to expect Compeed to prevent blisters. I’m sorry, but hydrocolloids just don’t prevent blisters! The skin shear that causes blisters still happens in spite of having a dressing stuck to the skin. And it's just far too common that blisters develop underneath it. Let me show you an example. Now if you don’t like looking at gory blister photos, then don’t look at this photo coming up. It's not pretty. I’m showing you this to highlight the ramifications of trying to get hydrocolloids to do something they're just not designed to do. Okay, here it is.
It just doesn't work. So please, don’t ever use Compeed as a prevention strategy. It'll almost always end in tears.
1:54 - Mistake Number 2
is to put Compeed on the wrong kind of blister. Compeed is not going to help a blister with a roof. In fact, it'll make it worse. Why? Because it’s going to stick like glue to your blister roof. And as you take that blister dressing off, you’re going to rip the blister roof off with it. I'm not going to subject you to a photo of this. But you can imagine why this is bad news. It’s bad news because it’s going to hurt. And it’s bad news because you need that skin to stay there to protect your raw blister base.
2:30 - So what type of blister is Compeed good for?
The answer is … deroofed blisters. You know those blisters where the roof has been rubbed right off, leaving nothing but a red raw sore. That's the base of your blister. Hydrocolloid dressings have been made for exactly this purpose - to help heal these red raw slightly weepy sores from the bottom up. Here's how it works. The weepiness stops the Compeed from sticking to the sore. And what’s more, the weepiness combines with the dressing to form a gel-like substance that helps the skin heal quicker. So much quicker than if you just let the air get to it and scab over. So the moral of the story is, never put Compeed on a blister roof.
3:20 - Mistake No 3
is to take your blister dressing off too early. Hydrocolloids are designed to stay on your for days at a time. Like 2, 3, or even 5 days at a time. Now if your blister is extremely weepy, a hydrocolloid is not your best option. But for light to moderately weepy deroofed blisters, hydrocolloids should be left on for days at a time. This will give the wound the environment it needs to help skin to grow back quicker. And to be more stretchy and resilient. And this is exactly what you want - strong and stretchy skin.
4:02 - Bonus Tip
And now for a quick bonus tip. Compeed is really sticky. But it’s common for an edge to roll-back and stick to your sock. The Compeed and your sock they bunch up and that lump can actually cause a blister. So my advice is to always anchor the edges of your hydrocolloid dressings with Fixomull or some other tape you trust to stop that roll-back.
4:31 - Wrapping Up
So there you have it:
Number 1, don’t ever use Compeed in the hope it will prevent blisters - because it won’t and you’ll pay the price.
Number 2, don’t ever put Compeed on a blister whose roof is still there - only ever use it on a deroofed blister.
Number 3, leave your dressing on for days to help healing.
And my bonus tip, anchor the edges down with a tape to stop roll-back.
So there you have it. If you’d like to know more about how to treat foot blister properly, so they hurt less and heal quicker, I suggest you get the Blister Treatment Blueprint. It's a free flowchart that shows you step by step, how to make the right decisions for your blister.

*Have you just watched this video and wished you'd never put that hydrocolloid on?* Because you've put it on an intact or torn blister? Well, don't panic! While it's on, it's not doing any harm. *It only becomes a problem when you go to take the Compeed off.* So consider just leaving it on for as long as possible until it becomes very loose. Then give it a soak in soapy water to help loosen the remaining adhesive and help you remove it safely.Hope this helps. ~ Rebecca 😃👣

Interesting video. Having just walked 26 miles, I found Compeed did 100% prevent blisters in my case - usually get them in specific locations over much shorter distances. If they're caused by rubbing from socks or shoes, then anything stopping that rubbing on your skin will naturally help.

Excellent advice. I learned the hard way over a 500 mile hike and made every mistake one can make. If it wasn't for some very good people along the way, I would have never made it. I have become very efficient with sport tape and duct tape. If I had to give one piece of advise, STOP the second you feel a hot spot or ANY discomfort of the feet. You can stop almost any blister, if you pay attention.

Any tips welcomed: I mostly ultra trail run in dry weather, between 35-115 F degrees. I wear Cep short running socks. I never get blisters! I do have calluses on my bunion and big toe, i keep it as soft and small as possible. I ran 85 miles in humid weather and it rained for about 45 minutes but my socks and shoes were soaked. I have had wet feet before running but in drier weather. I am going back next year to this event and I want to avoid blisters because i got a blister on each foot on the foot pad while running, i could still run but it was not ideal. The day after it hurt way more just walking and on the flight back it was hurting so much i had to ask for pain killers to the flight attendant. I tried using a needle before i flew back and some fluid came out on one but it just filled up again. Then i saw your videos and didn't do that anymore. Just kept it clean. Used a liquid antiseptic.day 5 now and i can run again. Another thing I did before the race is i applied Happy Toes from Squirrel Nut Butter on my feet but maybe it made it harder to keep my feet dry, my socks and shoes eventually dried out and i changed socks at mile 50.

I will be going on a 10 mile hike, and I've applied my hydro bandage to my heel. When I hiked last week, my hydro dressing rolled back because of the friction of my sock and won a nasty fight with my already present blister - ain't cool! Would you advise covering the entire hydro bandage with leukotape to keep it in place, or do I need to only cover the adhesive corners like in the video? Thanks.

@Blister-Prevention
@Blister-Prevention 3 жыл бұрын
You're not going to like it Yasmin, but the red raw weepy patch created is the exact type of wound a hydrocolloid like Compeed is made for. The hydrocolloid bandage you use now needs to be a little bit bigger than the sore. Read this for more details on how long to leave it on for, how to know when to change it... 1) www.blister-prevention.com/hydrocolloid-healing/ 2) www.blister-prevention.com/how-to-use-a-hydrocolloid-dressing/ 3) www.blister-prevention.com/hydrocolloid-bandages/

Glad it helped. No doubt the hydrocolloid will help a little as you run, but probably not as much as you think. There's more to making blisters non-painful with ongoing activity than just covering it and protecting it from rubbing. You need to stop the blister-causing forces, which is shear. Essentially, implement the prevention. The way you do this depends on where the blister is on your foot. For example, if it was on the back of your heel, this is what you need to know: www.blister-prevention.com/blogs/prevention/back-of-heel-blister

Why are hydrocolloid patches ineffective preventively when tape is? (I understand they're not designed for that usage and would be a waste of money but why don't they work?)
@Blister-Prevention
@Blister-Prevention Жыл бұрын
The reason hydrocolloids don't work as well as you expect them to is intrinsically tied to the cause of blisters and the misconceptions around this. Blisters aren't caused by rubbing. If they were, taping and Compeed would work brilliantly. You can sustain friction blisters even with tape or Compeed applied. Blisters are actually caused by bone movement relative to the skin surface, and the resultant stretching and distorting of soft tissue - called shear deformation and the mechanical fatigue within skin layers when that shear is repetitive. That mechanical fatigue (the tear under the skin surface) is the initiation of the blister injury which takes up to 2 hours to fill with fluid. Shear deformation is reduced slightly when you have adhesive products like tape and Compeed on your skin - it spreads shear over a larger area thereby reducing its peak. Does that help, Nick?

@@Blister-Prevention Thank you! I'm also wondering, should I shower in between changing my hydrocolloid bandages? I've had these same bandages on for maybe three days and they seem very ready to be changed. But I wasn't sure if it'd be okay to remove them, shower, then apply new bandages? Or should I avoid letting the water and soap touch them altogether?
@Blister-Prevention
@Blister-Prevention Жыл бұрын
@@Thawah It's a good idea to give it a good wash before you put the next hydrocolloid on. Just to reduce the chance of infection, and because I don't know anything about the severity of your blister or your health status, I'd be inclined to shower with with old one on. Then take your old dressing off, give your foot a little soapy or salty foot bath to clean it up, apply antiseptic and put your new dressing on. Make sense?
