This is the foot cam from my hot lap in the V8 Supercar. Just gives you an idea of how intensely V8 drivers actually do drive.
I was the passenger. Driver was Neil Crompton.

I don't see any double clutching. It's just heel and toe, it's impossible to do double clutching on a sequential gearbox as you can't get the car to neutral in between the different gears. And if this is a H pattern gearbox, then he might do it but since he's on the clutch while giving the blip, it's regular heel and toe.

At 0:13 you see him clutch, and then slightly lift the clutch as he blips the throttle. This is done as the shifter goes through the neutral slot on the down shift and it gives the gear box a quick spin lifting its rpm in order for him to select a gear maybe two or three gears lower than he was in. Youll see him do it repeatedly on rapid downshifts.

My old man started to teach me how to drive around the age of 12. It was just the basic stuff at first, then as I got more confident I started to teach myself how to drive manual. With being a large fan of the V8 Supercars, I took a fancy to the whole 'heel & toe' type of driving. When I started my drving lessons at 16, my instructor was very impressed that I tought myself but he said that style should be kept on the race track... Well, that advice only stayed in his car... not mine =D

Actually, the clutch was still used very frequently in V8 supercars. Not only was it used to get the car rolling, but also when changing across gates so the driver could prevent damage to the engine by accidentally changing down a gear, and for all downshifts. The clutch isn't used for every up-shift though, there is a microswitch mounted in the gear lever that cuts power to the spark plugs when the driver changes gear. This removes load from the gearbox and allows a gear change

Another answer is the V8 Supercars have a unique thing called a "shift cut" which is essentially a button on top of the gear lever. When the driver pulls a higher gear, they push the button down and that electronically cuts the motor out just to take enough strain off the drive-train to pull the next gear without needing the clutch. That is why you hear a loud crack or pop when you sit trackside at a V8 event and listen to the cars changing gears.

I dont quite understand the way he shifts; is it an H shifter or a sequential shifter? Also don't quite understand why sometimes he uses the clutch and sometimes not. And how can he shift by having the throttle fully open? Does the car have a mechanism that cuts the ignition while shifting? Hope someone can explain to me how this gearbox works.
@jpedraza17
@jpedraza17 8 жыл бұрын
Look up, clutchless shifting, heel toe downshifting, power shifting and rev matching, the transmission will allow you to do all this at the cost of some wear and tear. he performed all these very nicely
@deltoidsforaltoids
@deltoidsforaltoids 8 жыл бұрын
This car is fitted with a "Dogbox" transmission. Everyday "Synchromesh" transmissions use brass synchronizer rings to gently match the speeds of the the input shaft and the selected gear. This is most comfortably done by disconnecting the engine from the transmission via a clutch. Dogboxes use heavy duty "dog" teeth that force the input shaft to match speed with the selected gear instantaneously. You cannot be nice to a dogbox. To get the car going from a stop and into second gear, a clutch is used to make these transitions easier on the transmission, but in higher gear you can just slightly lift off the throttle, slam into the next gear, and go. Flat-foot shifting (where he doesn't clutch or lift the throttle at all) is achieved through ECU programming (usually ignition cut). All this is to reduce shift times. Dogboxes are designed to stand up to the abuse of hard, fast, unclutched shifts for racing use. They often use straight-cut gears--which is why you hear a high pitched whine coming from the car! Ever notice a manual car whines in reverse? The reverse gear is usually straight cut.

Clutch is often used 2 to 3, to ensure the correct gear is selected before clutch lifted. Its faster than getting the wrong gear and losing pace e.g getting 5 not 3. Ignition is cut momentarily when "flatshifting" without clutch and gas pedal is on floor. "Confidence tap" on brake pedal on long straight, checking for brake pressure before heavy braking at end, slightly longer taps keeps pedal firmer. Heel n toe downshifts due to no synchro and straight cut gears - makes for lighter gearboxes due to no longitudinal forces on shafts that you get with bevelled gears (thus thinner cases), but they are noisier. Clutch is needed if shifting up without full throttle.

Late reply but my focus st was the same way. They actually sold an aftermarket aluminum block you could mount behind the throttle pedal to raise it up some. Once I did that I could heel toe so naturally it wasn’t even something I had to think about while driving.

from what I've been told, it settles the rear on the long straights if the rear gets upset at all from bumps.
@laxer27
@laxer27 8 жыл бұрын
I would say he's preloading the brakes so there's a decrease in the braking time but it can also be used to settle the car, a quick tap of the brake pedal can shift the weight of the car forward (over the front axel) which will give more bite/traction while keeping the rear planted. If he just slammed the brakes and turned in at once, it would be a major load shift and the front opposite tire of the direction he is turning would take the entire force of the car as the weight was shifted.

Well I actually watch a lot of racing. What surprises me is the fact that he's not using the clutch after the first time he's re-accelerating. Therefore it would make sens to be a sequential gearbox. And the gear-changing time seems small enough to me for it to be a sequential too. But maybe I'm wrong ^^

1. He clutches only once because he shifts directly from a high gear into the gear for the corner. That can be a direct shift from 6th into 2nd 2. He taps the brake before the braking area to bring the brake pads close to the discs. On racing cars it can happen that the pads get knocked away from the discs due to bumps or riding the curbs. So the brake is right there and he has no dead pedal. No need to warn other drivers for an upcoming turn.

Notice how, on a long straight, he taps the brake pedal with his left foot. That is a check to make sure the pedal is high and hard, verifying that he will have good braking going into the corner. If the pedal is mushy, he will lift and try desperately to get the car slowed with little or no brakes before he gets to the turn.
@nwgts437
@nwgts437 8 жыл бұрын
+davidkosa ?? No. There isn't enough pedal pressure applied to judge soft/hard. It may be an ancillary benefit. Between braking points the movement and flex of the wheel/rotor will push the pads off the rotor. The main purpose of tapping the brake pedal is to set the pads against the rotors to ease and quicken throttle/brake transition and clear the rotor of water/dirt. Many modern sports cars will 'pre-load' the brakes like this automatically when the ECU detects aggressive throttle lift.

Hes so good he gets bored and shifts without clutch lol. and for people who are asking. you can change gears without the clutch by feeling out the gear by knowing your own car. also its a race transmission the gear changes are so quick anyway. The cluth does not have to be engaged for the trans to switch gears
@Photonenshizzl

and weirdly in addition to that, shifting without clutch prevents gear wear. that is said because most race drivers are on the throttle again before the clutch is completely released and therefore the gears wear out more easily than when shifting clutch less.

This was from the old H pattern gearbox days. Some/most driver would use the clutch when changing from 2nd to 3rd so they made sure they got into the 3-4 gate. Not getting into the 3-4 gate and into 3rd, meant shifting back to 1st. You can imagine the end results of that.

Its actually because as the brake rotor spins it often pushes the brake pad back into the caliper a small distance. So when the driver goes to brake, there's a small delay between the time he presses the brake pedal and the time the car starts slowing while the pad moves into contact with the rotor again. At high speed this delay may translate into a few metres and the driver may be travelling too fast to make the corner. Tapping the brake pedal ensures the pad is in contact with the rotor.

Forgot to add that in V8 Supercars most drivers flat shift in the gate (1st into 2nd, 3rd into 4th, 5th into 6th) and clutch when they cross the gate (2nd into 3rd, 4th into 5th). Yes it's an H-pattern box Clutch is always needed on downshifts, but they've changed to sequential shifters now, so it can be all clutchless. Some do use the clutch downshifting and most do in the wet as rears tend to lock easier then

Learned heel-toe in a 2003 Mini Cooper S. Was a lot of fun, but I was never so glad I did until I met someone on a narrow, mountain road and had to let them pass. I had a 5 speed Cummins Dodge dump truck with trailer on the back, and the road was steep and gravel, and by the grace of God, I managed to not stall or roll back! I sure was white knuckling it though!

The flat foot shifting or no lift shifting is controlled electronic through a limiter that keeps the rpm's from redline when the clutch is engaged. You can not do that in your street car unless you have done some mod's.

@v8luver64 This video was taken when they used the 6 speed H pattern box. Thy used clutch going from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th as it was across the gate. It was more as a safety thing incase they missed the shift and locked the gearbox up, grinded gears etc. the cars of today in v8SC have a sequential box, which is leave your foot flat and pull back to go up through the gears, push forward to go down through the gears. No clutch is needed on upshift or downshift

@DuneBman No gate, it's a sequential box. He uses the clutch on some lower gear shifts because there is more torque load through the gears and this takes extra load off the ratio in order to make the shift easier and to minimise the chance of damage due to the harsh cut in from the ignition cut out shift switch after the shift is made.

@1337shellc0der Someone else already pointed out that the shoes are made of fire proof material. One other design feature of driving shoes is that the soles do not stick out sideways beyond the sides of the shoes. Normal shoes usually have a lip on the soles that sticks out and can get caught on the back side of a pedal as you lift a foot up. Racing shoes are smooth and don't snag. Every sport has special footwear.
