Great video Tony. I went to a local podiatrist once and during treatment she said 'afterwards I'll show you how to tie your laces correctly' and I thought What? Yeah right! Turns out of course that when she showed me she was absolutely spot on. She approved of the Superfeet but said I wouldn't be benefitting from their full potential unless I tied my laces better. I'll try to explain it here? ▪︎ Loosen the laces TOTALLY all the way down to the last pair of eyelets. ▪︎ Whilst sitting, raise your straight leg and bring it back down firmly bumping/digging your foot's heel firmly into the heel cup of your shoe. Repeat a few times to really seat your heel into the heel cup. ▪︎ Then start to tighten the lace firmly from the last pair of eyelets working your way back up towards your ankle. Then tighten and tie the lace. OK, I know this might come across like trying to teach someone how to blow their nose, or teach your grandmother how to suck eggs, but it works. The shoe moulds snugly around the foot with appropriate pressure across and up the tongue. An instructor at Glenmore Lodge suggested I went to a sports physiotherapist when I really struggled with knee pain, saying the problem may not be my knee at all but my feet. And the physiotherapist diagnosed illiotibial band syndrome across the knee caused by being flat footed. She recommended Superfeet custom insoles which I duly purchased and voila! Problem solved. It made me realise just how important the correct footbeds are, after all as the song goes 'Your knee bone is connected to your thighbone" etc. You can't build castles on sand etc. The US outdoors backpackinglight.com members site (not to be confused with Bob Cartwright's superb backpackinglight.co.uk) has some great info on this topic.

Very good info plus I did a video on how to tie laces basically from where you pull laces together ie I didn't mention about toe to top that good additional info but I explained how to tie laces so they don't come undone. Thanks for additional info and yes the problems can move up and ankles the easiest to sort kneees start to be a problem and we don't want to think about hips lol 😆

There’s lots you can do to strengthen your feet and lower legs. However, I have been using a supportive insole the last couple of years and they definitely help me. I’ve been meaning to try superfeet so thanks for the reminder. Going forward it’s strengthening exercises plus insoles for me.

Yes indeed and trail runners walking rough ground help as foot ankle moves all over the shop. These don't strengthen but can support

Good video Tony. Since becoming a runner and taking up some more heavy challenges I’ve become more focused on insole choices. I used to suffer really badly with plantar fasciitis when in the MR service so was recommended superfeet. They worked to a degree but the overarching issue was my weight. Especially when I hit 23 stone. Now I’m down at 13.5 stone I don’t have many issues apart from a recurring metatarsal fracture due to running and especially running in boots with weight (long story) insoles of choice now are svartz insoles as recommended by Altberg.

Brilliant video Tony 😁 You say it's basic information but I disagree, I think the information you have imparted could be very valuable to a lot of hikers. The fashion nowadays is focused towards barefoot and zero drop style shoes with little or no support. This is probably great if you are in your 20s but like yourself I am in my 50s and obviously have old feet. I currently am using Superfeet Trailblazers in a pair of Altras as they fit my feet well around the heel and midfoot and allow room for my wide forefoot. I know this will go against the grain for some out there but it works for me and as you know fit is everything. The writing CT has done on this subject is also very valuable and incredibly helpful. Sorry to waffle on but I think the subject of boot/shoe fit needs to be spoken about more often . Cheers Tony 😁

I use zero drop shoes for hiking yes a video on that and why might be interesting 🤔 One thing I forgot to say they also aim to straighten feet when walking so all toes push off straight not pigeon feet . Ironically my last trip with Chris Townsend I got blisters but tough walking plus wet feet and not used to that type of walking 😅 Wet feet fine and expected but feet not hardened off.

Footwear and insoles everything like that is a pain in the ass for me because I'm size UK 13 and all the good stuff rarely goes to that size.
