In Tip 8 of Football Coaching Strategy and Training Tips with Coach Bill Renner, Coach Renner explains how he teaches a quarterback to read a pass route progression when he has 2 or 3 receivers in the route. He details the pre-snap read, the drop back read, and his at the top of the drop read the quarterback will use as he goes through the route progression. Pre-snap the QB will identify the defender vs his first read, then on his drop back he will assess the defender's pass technique, and at the top of his drop he will throw the receiver he selects open. Coach Renner details his 4-pass route and how he teaches each side of the route read with 2 receivers to the boundary and then the 3 receivers to the field. He provides his game video of this route which shows his quarterback using his system to deliver the ball on time and in rhythm and quickly before the defenders can react. Coach Renner has used this system he describes for coaching high school, college, and even 10-12-year-old quarterbacks in middle school and in youth league football with much success. Coach Renner gives the quarterback a specific clearly defined system for reading a pass route progression. Instead of having the quarterback standing in the pocket trying to make a decision with rushers in his face and confusion down the field with receivers and defenders. If you are looking for a method for your quarterback to read through his progressions and get to the right receiver Coach Renner will give you his simple system to do it.
