it's blowing my mind that it was even SHOT in 1080 in 2005 considering the budget, but i literally don't understand how it was uploaded that way back then. i assume they were able to reupload and replace the original footage? those lucky lonely island guys

For what it's worth, this was actually first uploaded to their web site in June 2004. I'm no expert, so I can't tell what it was filmed on, but I can say that even if their budget didn't allow for a 1080p digital camera, film cameras have been capable of recording at a higher "resolution" than 1080p for a long time. If this was recorded on film, it would only need to have been run through a converter and output as a 1080p file. (And even if the camera or film weren't amazing quality, the converter wouldn't know the difference and would still dutifully output it to 1080p.) In 2009, when KZbin added support for 1080p, they went back and re-encoded any older videos that were uploaded in 1080p prior to the site's support for it. I don't know for sure if this means that they allowed 1080p uploads all the way back in 2005, but if they did then this would make perfect sense. (Otherwise, like you said, maybe KZbin let them re-upload at 1080p at some point.) The real mystery to me is, if they did upload at 1080p in 2005, how they managed to get a 4:29, 1080p AVI, .MOV, or .MPG to be under the 100MB upload limit, since I recall video files generally being enormous back then.

This cinematic masterpiece does not have nearly as much recognition as it deserves. It touches themes of family, morals, grief, ambition, and guts. The cinematography could not be paralleled by any PBS documentary. The acting and special effects were both so seamless. Jorma's superb piano skills still bring a tear to my eye. Why this wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe is beyond me.
