When I was 11, riding a bike down a hill when the chain broke and had no breaks, last thing I remember was the bike zig zagging and then everything went black. The time was 5pm. From then on until 5a.m I would live a nightmare. Remember bits and pieces from then on. I was out cold when when helped arrived and my parents rushed me to the hospital. I was told I kept asking the same questions over and over, "Where is my dad"....my dad was next to me. "Where am I"......you're in the hospital. "Where is my dad".....this went on for hours. All I remember is having severe panic. I felt I was like in another dimension. Things and objects seemed to be moving and staring at me. I finally came back from the nightmare around sunrise. The diagnoses would be a sever concussion. For weeks my mom would wake me in the middle of the night to ask me where was I and what was my name. A severe concussion is a very bad and freighting thing that can ever happen to you.

I got a bump on the head in the sixth grade while on a hiking field trip. I remember hiking back and something was seriously wrong with my vision. I could only see a small area in part of my peripheral vision, It was scary but eventually came back. I suffered a hard hit playing football in HS a few years later and, again, my vision went screwy for awhile ('bout an hour). I later got a concussion, playing football, that put me in the hospital overnight. Again, my vision problem returned. Im in my 50s now and, as an adult, I have experienced random periods where my vision goes screwy...like it did when I had hit my head in school. These episodes of vision loss, however, are followed by headaches. I think these headaches are migraines because they can be pretty intense. Now, I find myself looking for answers or people who have similar issues.

It doesn't even take a direct hit to do damage. Watch their heads bobble side to side or back to front. Inside those skulls their brains are getting bashed around like bumper cars. And that damage is NOT TREATABLE. The constant bruising and bashing just extends the damage deeper into the cortex. Those cells are DEAD. They don't regrow. Watch Ben Utecht's videos on this topic here to really understand the price these players pay.

Troy A. is now two years older than Mike W. when he died. I assume he's got great genetics to be doing so well after the many terrible hits he took. Maybe some guys get crushed for years and can luck out and avoid CTE. My father recently fell and got a serious concussion. Seeing his behavior and confusion was truly an awful experience. We still understand so little about the brain. We need new meds. for brain diseases, especially the ones that attack the elderly. I've seen dementia up close and I'd much rather be dead that have it.

No, no, that’s not how it works. He *does* have it(from playing football from at least HS and onward), but it might take a while to manifest, or it might manifest in a different way. And Tony is confident that he has the disease.

@Lola23339 Жыл бұрын
@@mikerepmo No offense but that's not true at all. We know relatively little about the brain. For example, psychiatrists give scripts and big Pharma sell a ton of antidepressants and yet no one fully understands how the drugs work. Another example is how medications for Alzheimer's Disease (and other brain diseases) are valued in the stock market. Successes in drug that deal with the brain are rare and, when we see them, they get a huge premium over drugs for other areas of the body. That's simply because we don't know much (or you could anywhere near enough) about the brain. Trust me...I WISH you were right! Thanks for the comment.

I have observed among students that while it is not ever acceptable to roughhouse at school, many of those students who play contact sports in local little leagues have the hardest time understanding that it is not safe to tackle, not okay to put their hands on other students forcefully in class, at recess, etc. I suppose it can be quite bewildering to them to spend Monday through Friday in a class, trying to exercise restraint, when at all the practices and games, people are cheering you on to clobber players on the other team. No matter how much you discipline them about it at school, many of these youngsters way too often cannot remember to refrain from putting their hands and other body parts on their classmates at school. And there are parents out there, who will not appreciate it when your all-star little Junior chest bumps, tackles, or plays too roughly with their child and it results in the injury of their child.

@domais689 жыл бұрын
+FDzerzhinsky I see your point and respect it. I've seen young players knocked senseless too and it's sickening. It's sickening to see any child get hurt. Innocent children playing, or not playing, football is based on their parents' or guardians' decisions. Like it or not, I believe that's just the way is works. If you think my argument stops at children getting hurt, then respectfully, I think you're in denial. Life is damn tough and people make all kinds of decisions to try to better their lives and the lives of their families. People want to police these decisions? It's none of their business. Their are consequences for decisions and concussions are consequences of the game of football. In my opinion, we should be pragmatic about the game. Let's do what we can to make football a safer sport but not deny people personal decisions. As a wise Supreme Court Justice once said, "your rights stop where my nose begins." In other words, let people make their own decisions as long as they are not affecting you. If you don't like football or you don't want your son/s to play it, there's a simple solution. Move on and mind your own business.

NFL players needs to get pay more. It's tough to see things like CTE occurring but the love for football runs deep in America. Shutting down the NFL isn't an option. The best way is maybe developed more advance gears & equipment that provides the state of the art protection for players, implementing rules & regulations to help lessen the violence and make the game safer for players, and teaching players to tackle using proper form etc. The NFL won't be closing their doors anytime soon. But hopefully with more understanding, research & studies on the issue would provide many new solutions that can change the game for the better. The one thing that I do find sad is seeing the US president criticizing the NFL for implementing rules to make it safer for the players...

I have a different thought. What would happen if football was played without helmets and pads? There are a lot of hits that wouldn't be made if there were no helmets and pads. You sure wouldn't lead with your head if you didn't have a helmet. Better tackling fundamentals would have to occur also.
@justanotherguy90126 жыл бұрын
The helmet does nothing to protect the brain from impacting the inside of the skull. In fact,it can make it worse. People gain an unconscious sense of security and indestructibility when they put on a football helmet. And that leads to harder hits and leading hits with the head. All those pads make the game faster and harder hitting. But they also protect the body from even more damage. What’s the solution then? Take contact out of this game. It’s a hard truth, as I have always loved football, but we need to be aware of the damage this sport causes to people’s brains.

It is simple, if you don't like football, don't watch it. If you don't want your kids to play football, then don't let them. But don't advocate that they should 'ban' football because of CTE or other health risks. Boxing, Kickboxing, MMA, Hockey, and pretty much any contact sport is gonna have risks for head trauma. Should we ban every sport where athletes take shots to the head? If so, at least you'd be consistent. To tackle just the NFL for this is issue is unfair to players and fans who love the game. Most NFL players are aware of the risk, and are willing to take it. So let them be.

How he survived those first few years is beyond me. He played in the old NFC East, when you had NYG, PHI, and WAS with tough, nasty defenses. Not to mention he would have to play at least 10 games (8 home, 1 PHI, 1 NYG) on playing surfaces that were little more than carpeted concrete. I grew up hating the Cowboys since their America's Team days (as every good American should), but I ended up having a TON of respect for Troy. I remember one year, he was playing in Denver and Romanowski took him down. He landed at a bad angle and ended up breaking his collarbone. Romanowski had a deserved reputation as a dirty player, and a couple of reporters were trying to bait him into crying about it, and he would have none of it. Basically said he landed wrong, that's part of the game, and he'd be back in six weeks. This is a guy with a broken bone. QB's today call for a flag anytime they get sneezed on. Aikman was a MAN.

Cops and firemen can get killed, and football players and boxers, especially boxers can get their heads wacked a lot of times, it comes with the territory. When I was in HS in the early/mid 80s many of the stoner types had the option of taking extra auto and wood shop classes, and that's what they did, and went on to be mechanics, plumbers, etc. I get the point here but we are not all meant to go to College and look at the result of our soft, "politically correct" society. There's just as much if not more racism, (or so you hear there is), and half the milens have their heads so far up their anus's that there's corn stuck in their teeth. We are not making this Country better by coddling everyone and telling our young ppl that their feelings are what matter. If you need a safe space then pull the covers over your head and stay there until you die, or just man the fk up, and understand that your great grand parents and the ppl before them had it a hell of a lot tougher, so stop feeling sorry for yourself!

I agree that the NFL executives & owners did very fucked up and corrupt things to hide CTE and market the violence of football, but every player knew they were signing up for some sort of long-term health effects by playing football, especially those who played it for 15+ years like Mike Webster and Junior Seau. Kickers, Punters, and some QBs are the only players who should play for longer than 10 years in my opinion.

Leigh Steinberg probably has never had a paper cut in his life yet he profited handsomely off of these players. Although agents are necessary liaisons between players and greedy owners, they have always been profiteers and parasites in the game. Maybe Leigh should have advised ole Troy to hang em up after that hospital encounter. I can only assume that he didn't. Such advice would put a dent in Leigh's income.....

The only person with Troy in that hospital room that day was his agent, and this is his story because Troy doesn't remember a thing. In fact, there's a lot that Troy has openly said he doesn't remember because of his nine career concussions.

There is a solution to decrease risk. First take away pads and helmets and ban any tackle above the hip so even if u get trucked u can fall and catch urself vs whiplash. Ban hits to players in the air and look to get rid of blindside hits

My head almost exploded trying to comprehend what you said.... These are 200-300 pound men who are incredibly strong and fast.... You take away those pads and people are going to get hurt badly probably killed. Those Helmets keep these guys alive most of the blunt force headshots they receive on routine plays would kill them.

This is just BS! Millionaire players complaining about a vocational choice. How about us Ham and Eggers who put in 40 years in the blue collar world with numerous violent work related injuries. Ever worked on a oil rig or laid brick. I really feel bad for the NFL guys but do like us. Shut up and dance!

Fuuuck,,, I've lived through just that, a number of times, on the Football field, with soooo many games, just a blank... and so many randome occasions, ever since...! I've learnt that I can't overcome this, but have had to learn to account for it and just try to manage and live. in spite of it - so often sliding 'out' of the situation, where I have to try and explain myself and resenting that I have to do so... ashamed, though I really know I ought not be...! Can you possibly imagine, having started the self same conversation, from moments earlier... and then trying to retain some form of credibility and just hope, that casually brushing the issue away, hopefully into obscurity, is hopefully gonna save me the 'Please Explain', sometime down the track, in a bid to save your job...

+Damian Fowler I can relate. I never made it to the NFL, but having played from Jr high thru college I suffered many concussions, mostly on the field, some off. My memory is very spotty of those days, some games I don't remember even playing, and I would go thru practices and not remember where I was. But I kept going, because back in the 70s you never stopped, unless you were dead. It was a pride thing, I think.

+realrasmckhaileath realrasmckhaileath: You obviously have never played sports because if you had, you would have more respect. In football you spend hours and hours in the weight room, on the field running, and anything you can do to stay in shape. All of that hard work is for playing on friday nights or saturdays in front of 1000s of people. The mentality of a football player is something you don't understand. Playing is everything, and much better than being on the sidelines, so regardless if you're hurt you still want to be out there. You can call it stupid if you want, but the opinions of the clueless mean nothing
@damianfowler31959 жыл бұрын
+realrasmckhaileath You really are the outstanding example, of the effeminate, opinionated halfwit... sat spouting shite, more than likely soooo envious of anyone who actually 'produced' and performed on the playing field... I played a variety of team-sports, as well as individual competition... and Football, on the Gridiron, is the ultimate Team effort - being that each and every member of the team, or component of the unit... has to do his job, or the entire effort is for naught...! Fitness and stamina is paramount, as the periods of 'Total Maximum Exertion', play after play - is not equaled in any other sport, that I know.... every other sport has periods, in the game, where one can take it easy.... recuperate and prepare for the next 'full on moment'... whereas American Football takes 100% of effort, beat up. or not... winning and full of energy, or not... every single down, with 25 or 30 seconds, if that, to get your breath in between... to get one's breath... Some may 'bang on' about how 'Rugby' is the harder sport, as there is no pads, or helmet... Granted, Rugby may be(or perhaps not) the 'rougher contact sport - but isn't even in the same League, when it comes to the 'collision' aspect... I have played with many, many players, who have participated in both codes, as I have myself... and American Football is by far the most demanding, overall... as well as the most taxing - before one even starts to consider the result of the repetitive Head trauma... So,perhaps you ought to pull your neck in and return to your 'parlour games'... dear! ;)

+realrasmckhaileath For a comment you supposedly could not understand, you managed to infer pride, sexual orientation, and all manner of things you just wanted to write about, but weren't actually referenced in the original post. I think American football is an idiotic sport and I can't bear to watch it, but the disingenuous bullshit projection of your post is far more irritating.
