A delegation of a few from the English FA went to Barcelona to learn how to play the way that they did. This was when Pep Guardiola was there. One of the coaches who went over, a top coach himself, who carries out training courses for coaches, really enjoyed the experience. He learned a lot and raved about all that he had learnt and what he had seen. When speaking to him personally about his trip, I realised things would never change and that there was a fundamental flaw. This coach revealed to me his overwhelming weakness which was his pride. Although there are some genuine people at the FA. A lot do not recognise that they themselves are the problem. There are people who are humble, clever and honest enough to want something better but they are outnumbered. Too many people at the FA are too close minded, stubborn, arrogant, have inaccurate preconceived ideas, are overconfident and do not have much imagination. This makes them very limited in what they can perceive, understand, learn, conceive, create, nurture and develop. They restrict coaches and managers in an environment which tightly guards the status quo. They neither produce or harbour positive or progressive change. It's probably better for English coaches and managers to have a loose but friendly association with the FA and to develop themselves beyond doubt.

As this tournament has gone on to prove, Southgate's managerial style isn't a problem. Portugal got Georgia and Slovenia back-to-back, couldn't manage a single goal outside of spot kicks. France have generally been the best side in the world for nearly a decade. One goal from open play the whole time they were in Germany. ONE. Stakes get higher, scrutiny gets more intense for mistakes, perceived 'lesser' nations continue to improve. Southgate recognises all this and yes, with some luck at crucial moments, is in another final.

England needs to build their play around one man... not Jude Bellingham, nor Harry Kane, nor any of the multitude of attacking talent we have at our disposal. No, the one man we need to anchor our strategy around is Declan Rice. Rice is both a rampant defensive midfielder and probably England's second best passer of the ball, behind Harry Kane. Playing Rice just in front of the defensive line allows him to bolster the defence while also acting as a "quarter-back", firing long passes from deep midfield up to the strikers and out to the wings-a similar role to the great Andrea Pirlo. Rice's midfield partner Gallagher/Mainoo has the role in this strategy of creating space for Rice. Both players are suited to this role in different ways: Gallagher can press the opposition midfield, forcing them to give up space that Rice can then exploit. Mainoo can push the ball forward, opening up space behind him for Rice to drop into.
@in4mus853 ай бұрын
Lol second best passer of the ball? Rice passes sideways too much to have such plaudits. Trent is much better at passing than him. The issue is that England under Southgate have zero off the ball movement. No runs in behind the opposition defence. I'll agree that Rice and Bellingham are the best midfielders in the squad. But Rice is great because of his positioning, tackling and ball carrying ability. Not so much his passing range.

Southgate keeps on getting more international success than the vast majority of previous England managers. Some have had the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Scholes, Owens and co, an amazing golden generation and been sent home early. There is something Southgate is doing right and not getting the credit for. How many teams have been poor to okay and won tournaments. Look at Portugal and Italy, for example. They've played terribly and won. Even if this England team wins this tournament, Southgate will get zero credit because the players will get it all, even if other England managers have achieved nothing with some very good teams.

I've noticed they sit deep, in order to expand the field and counter the low block. But it is very messy, and becomes a 50/50 challenge very often. But it stops them from being overloaded and not counters. That's why the defence looks good, because they often have the numbers. It's an alternative to the high line press. It's very weird and unorthodox

We know we have a team that Can contend. And we believe that even if we cannot win it and go all the way, we can put up a solid fight - Assuming we play our best game. And right now, we are not there. It is the managers job to make these individuals work together - and he is not doing it. Nobody in England ever TRULY expects to win a tournement, yea we shout the usual 'its coming home' but it carries as miuch weight as 'god save the king'. If you take it literally then you are missing the point. We believe we can play a solid game when we are at our best, and we could probably give some top teams a run for their money, but no. We know the chances of us winning are slim, even at our best. And we are far FAR from our best. There is a reason Englands name is throw in contention - because the potential (on paper) is always there - but southgate is incapable of making it work. think about it. the front 4 in the England squad have between them: 114 goals the Laliga player of the season A Ballon Dor contender The top bundesliga scorer The EPL 2nd and 4th top scorers The Laliga joint 3rd top scorer The EPL player of the year The EPL young talent of the year Now any half decent manager could make THAT work - Southgate is clueless.

Park the bus is a style used by teams who don't have the pure quality to overcome their opponents, it can work pretty well when you are fighting opposition with far better players. Many teams found success using this style were from the 2000's/2010's. (Inter Milan 2010, Chelsea 05/06, Atletico mid 2010's etc). All of these teams were 'underdogs' so as to say. Now, England has the best squad depth in the world, why the hell would anyone try and play park the bus with them? Mourinho and Simeone, were the main users of this tactic but times have evolved, there is a reason why Mourinho can't find a job in a top 5 league and why Simeone has had to change up his tactics. Parking the bus itself isn't the best strategy nowadays, you can never truly be safe vs top tier opposition. Many times, it leads to you losing games you should have won easily. It's far harder to just keep on defending assaults in modern football. Southgate was appointed in 2016, when England had just lost to Iceland and had a pretty average squad and he did a great job too. But, the England squad depth has grown exponentially now, and so have playstyles. Southgate can never hope to beat a strong team with these type of tactics

Lets not forget that, in the end, football is an entertainment product as much as it is a sports competition. When the game becomes boring people will eventually stop watching which would lead to less generated revenue. We might be way past the point of this being a real danger, but still, Id like to think that football is a game for the people and should be played in a way that entertains those.

@@SamerA3737And that's another stupid mistake he made. The guy and his coaching staff are weak. Any left back option, whether good or average, will be better than an injured Luke Shaw or Trippier, and I don't know how he missed Leif Davis, Ipswich town LB. The guy had 18 assists in championship, won player of the season and will play in the EPL next season.

Frankly as a football fan, I just want to watch proper football. Not fvcking seniors' rugby with players passing sideways and backwards, and then stroll around on the pitch. That tempo, low intensity and sitting deep is so reminiscent of the Italian teams of the 80s. But at least when those teams spring a break, they go for it. Southgate is so concerned with keeping his defensive shape, it's basically frustrate the hell out of your opponent and hopefully one of your stars do something magical.

Since 2016, in 2 World Cups and 2 Euros (so far) England has beaten only Germany among top tier teams. When England played other big teams, like France, Belgium (twice), and Croatia, it lost. He even managed to lose a final at home...and he has arguably had the most talented generation of players since the Golden generation in the early 2000s...that's Southgate's secret...in big tournaments, he is the luckiest England manager who ever lived...
