I was a baby at the time so I don't remember it, but from what my parents told me, the 2004 Euros were very painful for the country. At home, and we lose in the final to Greece. And after that, the hope for a international trophy was very low, as the golden generation of Figo, Rui Costa and Deco (and others) was gone. But then this tournament happened. The squad was nowhere near the squad we have now, but our manager said they were only coming back home after a month. And it happened. That Eder goal is legendary. A whole country united. A beautiful moment. Will never forget it.

Now that I think about it, Eders story is such a unique one. Martin Tyler’s commentary said it best: “the striker who rarely scores, scores the biggest goal in the history of the Portuguese national team.” Before then, nobody knew him. After that, nobody talked about him. He just popped up, and did what Ronaldo, Figo, Rui Costa, Eusebio, Nani etc didn’t do. Score the winning goal in a final. Incredible really

As a portuguese, till this day, every time i watch a video about 2016 Euros, i still cant hold the tears. You did an amazing job with this video, I would only like to add something that Fernando Santos said that was really the turning point for the whole nation. During the group stage (i think it was after the Austria game) the portuguese media and the portuguese people were completely mad and in disbelief with the poor performances. Everybody was trashing Santos and the national team altogether. But during the press conference after the Austria or Hungary game, Santos said "Eu só vou para casa dia 11, e vou ser recebido em festa. Vou ficar cá muito tempo." which translated means "I will only go home in the 11th of July, and I will be received with a party. I will be here for a long time.". AND THIS, especially after the win against Croacia, made everybody believe it was possible, and I mean everybody in Portugal. From the people, to the press. Suddenly we could not care if the football was ugly or not. We even created a song saying exactly that. Winning was what mattered the most. This was something that no manager was able to do, the nation was united, the players were united and we could feel it. This was truly a fairytale, feels like yesterday that I was in the center of my city with thousands of people watching the final, and pretty much everybody was in tears after Ronaldo left the game injured. Followed by angry people like me after Santos decided to sub Renato Sanches for Eder, saying Eder was not the kind of player to play the final. And oh boy was I wrong. Thank you for this amazing video

To be fair or Éder when he played in the portuguese league he was known for scoring a lot of goals like these, seemingly little chance or reason to go for a goal, or whenever everyone was expecting him to slow the pace and hold possession, he'd just go for a goal and score. I think he used his strength and balance well in all the goals I've witnessed, that's why he is in the national team. A valuable target man up front that can keep the ball and get you a goal on a seemingly dead play. Sadly his not so consistent form didn't let him have an accomplished career as a national team player but he was one of my favorite players.

I think seeing this 2016 Portugal side as one that would simply frustrate the opponent is seriously underselling it. At some point you have to commend the strong defensive play the team showed. The defensive organization shown by players like Pepe (who was probably the best player in the whole tournament), Fonte, Guerreiro and even an ageing Ricardo Carvalho was something beautiful to behold at times. As a portuguese myself, yes, it's not as flashy as the Euro 2004 team. But we were sick of getting eliminated while playing attacking football, making an effort to take 20+ shots per match. I'll take the 2016 win any day. For my money, we *were* the best team in pretty much every match we played, because most of the time, the team was in control of the match even if it didn't have possession.

Worth noting that there were a big mistakes in this video. The inaugural edition of Euro is taking place in 1960 (not 1958). Portugal lost 3-7 on aggregate during the 1950 World Cup qualifiers. During the 1966 World Cup, Portugal had a 100% record in group stage, winning all 3 group games, including a 3-1 win over Brazil (they didn't draw), while Eusebio scored a quattrick for the country in a 5-3 comeback win over North Korea (not a hattrick). Finally, Portugal also won the U-20 World Cups in 1989 and 1991, which featured key players for the golden generation team (Luis Figo and Rui Costa, particularly). They also played in Euro 1996, going unbeaten in the group stage, including a 3-0 win over eventual 1998 World Cup third place Croatia, before narrowly losing to Karel Poborsky's iconic banger in the quarterfinal against Czechia.

Another aspect of the group stage is that the three draws nearly would have been enough to finish second in the group. When the game against Hungary finished the result in the parallel game Austria Iceland was one one. If it had stayed like this Portugal would have finished second which would have meant they would have met England in the round of last sixteen, France in the quarterfinals and Germany in the semis. After watching the Portuguese game I changed to the other game thinking: If one of the teams scores and Portugal drops to third it might be possible to reach he final. I celebrated Iceland's last minute winner almost as much as the Portuguese goals.

He suffered from a nasty knee injury very young and that side-tracked his career. Was never the same player since but he was kept around because of his quality pre injury

I remember watching the final. I had eye surgery some weeks before os my eyes were very sore. But i was feeling so nervous i had to take a sedative cause i was feeling my eyes popping with my high and pulsating heart rate. Man, when i saw Ronaldo cry i knew the team would leave their skin on the pitch to play for him. I knew that and they did it.

The 2004 team was ridiculous but I think that now Portugal has an even better side. Diogo Costa, Inácio, António Silva, Nuno Mendes, Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Jota, Félix, Gonçalo Ramos, Matheus Nunes, Palhinha, Dalot, João Neves, Vitinha, Leão, Guerreiro... even the aging Pepe and Ronaldo. Top players.
@SinMissils10 ай бұрын
they are a pretty good team, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they are on par with the massive generation we had back then in 2004, Deco, Rui Costa, Luis Figo, Ricardo Carvalho, Ricardo (the goalkeeper), Maniche, Petit, Simão Sabrosa (when he was actually good), Pauleta, Nuno Gomes and more, our midfield and offense was STACKED and defense wasn't that lacking either.

I remember thinking of course France was gonna win that 2016 final (“home field advantage”) and I didn’t even wanna bother watching it so I didn’t. Well that taught me a lesson. Thanks very much for the video! All those dirty tricks when ENG and MEX hosted. I’m sure glad nobody does those things anymore …

I'm portuguese and even I expected Portugal to get fragged after the group phase. When we beat France I just took it as karmic justice for the loss against Greece in the 2004 final match.
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia10 ай бұрын
France-Portugal was the worse Euro final I've watched in my lifetime, that is from 1996. Now the French complained a lot about the ease of Portugal's run but France's wasn't much better: the group was ridiculously lopsided in their favour by virtue of being hosts - they wouldn't otherwise have been seeded - then they only got to face Germany in the semi-finals while Spain, Italy and Germany battled it out amongst themselves. There was a sense of poetic justice in Portugal raining on France's parade on 10 July 2016, just like that feeling of poetic justice was unavoidable in 2004 with Portugal-Greece and 2021 with England-Italy. UEFA works way too hard to favour the tournament hosts, it's thoroughly enjoyable when it gets the comeuppance it deserves.

Little heads up on pronunciation of Portuguese and Spanish my friend: The double LL in Spanish sounds like the Y in English: Saltillo = "Saltiyo" And the Ç in Portuguese sounds like an S: Seleção = "Selesao" The double RR in Portuguese sounds like a strong H = Guerreiro = GueHeiro And in both languages the E at the end is loud, just like it is in Italian: Fonte = FontEH, Bosque = BoskEH, Conte = ContEH

Thanks! Will do better next time !

Heads up on pronunciation by a portuguese, just minor corrections The "ç" sounds like a double SS like in maSSive, preSSing and also the "E" is most of the times close mouth sound like "uh"(has a logic but no details needed for now) and open mouth sound like the "A" in pAssive Ão sound is hard so it's ok to say it like that So Seleção = Suhlassao Double RR is the French R, where you have to use the part of the throat that makes sound when they snore, so you go Guerreiro= Gue(snore)eiro In portuguese, we DON'T say the final E in the words, it was right the pronunciation of the player named José Fonte. In Spanish is different yes
@andrebarreiros73159 ай бұрын
In brasilian portuguese the final E sound might be even close to the English "E" and is not silent like Portugal's portuguese

Great video! I think you're forgetting one important reason for Eder's goal. Only a few minutes before the goal, Koscielny got a yellow card for a hand ball. To me, it much looked like Koscielny let go on purpose to avoid a second yellow, probably not believing Eder would shoot from so far out.
@Darkiouls10 ай бұрын
And funnily enough, that handball was wrongly attributed to Koscielny, as of all people, Eder was the one to have commited the handball. It happened roughly around a 1 minute and 30 seconds before his goal.

I remember that Final. After Payet injured Ronaldo, all of my friends were pissed off and we were wondering if this was the end of the Portuguese fairy tale run. And then out of nowhere, Eder steps up, shoots a shot outside the penalty box and underneath Umtiti and wins it for Portugal and Ronaldo ❤😂

The thing is that after the group stage, if each game is tied it has to go overtime. The thing is that another team isn't going to play for 90 minutes, they will be dragged and frustrated for 120 minutes and even go to penalties. The thing is that the portuguese team can do this all over again in the next game. It is crazy

Portugal should not have lost to Greece in 2004 either… its football, so if it happened then it means Portugal is European Champion fair and square.

25:05 "They had this weird thing, where they won a Euro every 16 years, dating to back to get inaugural win in 1984" So they won 1984 and 2000... It's really stretching this one to make a "tradition" out of 1 occurrence. Yes, 1. They had won once 16 years apart.

Changing the stadium the day before in 1966, forcing a train journey, had an obviously influence on the match against england, its not an opinion, it's a fact, resting is very important and besides that, if the stadium where to be where Portugal was staying, then England would be the ones to travel. Nowadays something like that would never happen 👍 At the maximum the game would be postponed to allow proper resting

The day after I couldn't believe what had happened the night before. But it wasn't that we had won, I couldn't believe that it was Éder who scored, something that many said would happen before the game in a joking way, but that actually came true and is still the single most important goal in our long footballing history. Éder may have faded from sports headlines, but he is still revered here, Lord Éder forever and ever.

Greece wasn´t suppost to win Euro 2004, and win twice against to Portugal... and win the Euro... . And Portugal should win more time, but it didn´t! In 2000 we were bitten by the "hand" and popular franchise of 98 World Championtionship France. In 66, we´re been first pushing out and England win their home competition Euro or Worldcup! Like the "hand God" of Maradona against England! Lossers through up in face of winners everytime! .. Wasn't suppost happen, but it happen!
