I must say Chelsea has surprised me. I know one shouldn't take preseason into account but they really looked chaotic and the start of the season seemed to go the way we expected. However at some point idk when, it seems like the team is clicking. Not only are they getting consistent results, they're playing generally very good football (it helps having players like Palmer and Caicedo). What impressed me most was Maresca's decisiveness in picking his first team squad out of the huge squad at his disposal, immediately disposing the issue of the squad size as the big talking point - funny how that topic has died down since. I agree they're not in a title race, their defence is not up to scratch for the premier league title, often times they have looked vulnerable and they have often won games through outscoring their opponent rather than relying on their defence (the 5-2 game against wolves comes to mind) but i think they are comfortably top 4 contenders this season unless they have a huge drop which i can't see happening. I think they'll actually be the team that could disrupt the title race between liverpool and Arsenal.

He's so blessed with that squad quality and he's doing justice to it. The player management, the tactical depth required for a squad of that quality, building a system that both fits the players and creates a culture not only in the first team but in the academy and Strasbourg as well. Good coach. Flexible, very flexible but very strict to his principles and systems. Looking forward to seeing more from him. He's been trying that diamond midfield since preseason, against City, Inter and in the second half against Madrid, I think. The 3-3-4 in-possession structure is a perfect system for all players. What a genius. You can tweak it in so many ways and he has the players for that. People are talking about what signings need to be made and I laugh it off because that squad is fully equipped to take on anybody. Injuries can't even hurt us anymore. And we're already waiting for players that I think are the perfect profiles for the areas we need improvement in. Namely: RCB/RM/LW. Anselmino/Josh will do well at RCB along with Uncle Tosin & Wes. Paez is perfect for that RHS role. He has a whole Cole Palmer to learn from. Estavao coming means Neto will be the second more direct winger alongside Sancho & Mudryk. Everywhere else is fine. Unless injury then they'll be forced to look somewhere for immediate replacement but I trust the boys are ready to impress Enzo because he's been doing really well and the competition we're seeing is the evidence for his magical work.

Chelsea have a good squad because they are spending far more than they can afford and spreading it over next few years. You need to wait 5-10 years to see if this model is actually sustainable or if it will bankrupt the club. This squad wasn't built by carefully selecting one or two players per year, it was a mass purchase of anyone with talent so obviously there are good players to pick from

As someone was has watched a lot of efl Championship last season, this chelsea form is not surprising and us very similar to Leicester start last season, Chelsea will probably get the champions league spot at the end of the season but Leicester's intensity really dropped during the last 15 games which can be a big problem for chelsea if it happens this season too. I think they will push Liverpool all the way but who knows

our next evolution is improving on defensive personnel, fofana isn't reliable because of his injuries and colwill isn't a good positional defender and kind of a rash decision maker but obviously the glaring hole in the team is the keeper, we need a our version of an alisson or neuer

Colwill is also 21 years old, he'll only improve in this regard. Defenders take longer to develop, you'd do well to keep faith with the CB's you have unless one falls off dramatically or an experienced defender (think 26-29) is available for a reasonable fee. Fofana is only 23 and still building himself back up, he'll be fine.

A great system is as good as its players. Without quality players to play a system a great coach will look ordinary. I think Maresca has the best of both worlds that most coaches don't have and has made the most of it. Many complained of a bloated squad, but being a smart coach he saw a squad of quality players he could choose, pick and refuse to build a playing style that frankly reminds me of why football is described as a beautiful game. Chelsea may have found a gem.

If Maresca had arrived at same time as Potter then he would also have had just as short a tenure. Potter had no chance with the chaos going on around him and if Lampard had taken over sooner we would have been in a relegation battle. Poch had a pre season but then had huge injury list which may have been partly due to his methods but he left us in a better state than when he arrived. The main reason we are where we are now is that even though Palmer came in as an afterthought when Olise stayed at Palace he has turned out to be a world class player in a position that is so vital. He makes and scores so many of our goals. Maresca is no doubt a fantastic manager and we will be able to compete properly under him but anyone thinking this is totally due to the owners having a master plan needs to look at the facts. A slower more calculated transition would have seen us stay in the top four. Our excitement at this vibrant young team should be tempered by the fact that its been a very risky strategy.All that said lets enjoy the ride

We need a leader at the back now. A reliable GK (Jorgensen maybe ?) and leader at CB who can command the line. Colwill is a good progressive passer but is rash on his decision making at times. Fofana is too injury prone. A world class CB and a reliable GK is much needed to improve this team and take it to the next level.
