Conte has to be one of my favourite tacticians because of his pragmatism. He is not using 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 because he does not have strong wingbacks at Napoli to carry those systems but has lots of good players in central areas (Anguissa, Lobotka, McTominay, Lukaku). On paper Inter probably have the strongest squad in Serie A and are the hot favourites but Napoli are certainly title challengers this season.
@flavio718026 күн бұрын
Conte is without a doubt the best manager in Italy if you're aiming for the league (maybe even in Europe, leaving Pep aside). Besides, Napoli will only play in 2 competitions this season as opposed to Inter and Juventus who will play in 5 (if you add the World Cup at the end) and Milan who will play in 4. They're in a very strong position this season.
@alvina115025 күн бұрын
His pragmatism was not shown during his tenure at Tottenham though. I think he was being a bit too idealistic at Tottenham, forcing wingback system a bit too much

One thing is that he did not always use a three in the back formation. He was inspired by Walter Mazzarri's Napoli, who heavily relied on a 3421 formation. It is interesting that Napoli, as a rival, was the start of his popular three in the back and now, as his team, seems to be the end.

As a Spurs fan I did feel like we had to part ways. A bad fit especially at that time. We needed a long rebuild and Conte more than any other manager cannot be comfortable if he feels that he can't win now. If he manages to win with Napoli , he will have won the serie A with 3 different clubs. That would be quite something. I think you would have to go back to the 30’s and Arpad Weisz for such a feat. And of course there is the PL title which is the cherry on the cake.

Don't think anyone anticipated Conte to move to 4 at the back, but he has. Extremely good coach tactically and always gets the best out of the squad he has. Maybe clubs who want to play 4 at the back can start looking at him now, not just see him as a 3 at the back coach.

Anyways, if this is the case, Conte already adopted positional game in his style in the past and if he really is doing something similar again he shows great humbleness, intelligence and knowledge of the game doing what is needed the most by his team and by what serie a's tendencies are (man to man approaches, low blocks and high density in the box etc.).

Anguisa is excellent, but imagine Gilmour and Lobotka together once they get fit and familiar with one another? Insane

The reason why he switched to 4-back tactic was not lukaku and kvara being more comfortable but the lack of quality wingers in the squad. When he joined Napoli, it was clear that the team would change from the long time practiced 433 into 3421, but the transfer session was though and weird, especially for the Osimhen situation, conte understood it and decided to switch back, but in his own way

Conte hasn't always played 3 atb. At Siena he played a 424 and he carries that system into Juve. He then adapted to a 352 in Turin to make the most of his personnel. This change ruined Milos Krasic and turned him into an afterthought when he was one of Juve's best players in the old system. Conte adapting tactics to suit the team is what he does so well. At Chelsea he stuck with the 4231 until a vad game against Liverpool and thats when he switched to the 3421, and it looks like hes made the change nuch quicker this season. 🙂

Slightly Unrelated but this is where good managers are separated from master tacticians. Conte learning from his failure at Tottenham, tried to use the wingback system in Napoli at the start but quickly realised his players were better suited to another system, he instantly improvised and adapted instead of forcing his system on players! Then we have managers like Ten Hag for United, even after spending millions cannot get the team an identity. Constantly sticks to his formation instead of adapting and improvising, forcing players to adapt which in turn is making United a mess. I mean players are to blame as well but man come on! how the fu** can you be at a club for 3 years and not have a style or identity still!
