I love this concept. Very cool video. Interesting fact, the reason the Jabuloni was so unpredictable was because it was 'too round'. You can look up the science behind it, but it basically removed air drag creating insane movement patterns. By making this ball out of all the different panels, it reintroduces the air drag by making the ball not too rounded. But even with that, the ball is still moving like crazy. Just an incredible feat of engineering by the designers of this ball.

Close, but the key detail making the Jabulani unpredictable was that it was subject to the air currents it was passing through because of the low drag. The low drag difficult for players to apply lift (lift just refers to the ability for an object to "grab the air" to change its trajectory) and manipulate its trajectory. You can technically make any ball fly like "knuckle ball" by kicking it dead with little to no "lift" it was just so easy for it to happen with the Jabulani because of its poor qualities to "grab the air."

There are many reasons why the ball won't curve consistantly, but the two big ones are: 1) Low friction on the ball surface - as Con is complaining he can't catch some of the surfaces, if you try to kick them, there will be less grip from your shoe, leading to less spin. So if you hit a grippy part, the ball would spin much more, and curve much more. If you aren't paying close attention to where you hit, you'd see it as random. 2) Curve works when spin pushes air from one side of the ball to the other. It's quite likely in my mind that the inconsistant surfaces push different amounts of air, which creates chaotic pressure profiles around the ball instead of the regular "high pressure on one side/low pressure on the other" that you get from a ball with a consistant surface. If you are really curious, I am sure some of the science-based channels would love to get a look at the ball and actually test what is going on!

Your second point saved me some effort posting 👍 In addition, the different materials, and masses, mean the balls center of mass is not at the center of the ball, that makes spinning it a lot harder as it's trying to rotate around an offset axis. Brilliant ball for a bit of fun!

The panel design isn’t really the issue or what makes the jab fly weird, it’s that it’s so smooth it’s like kicking a balloon rather than a ball, the air basically pushes the ball around. Now the chaos Jab being hand stitched would probably fly better than the og jab but since the panels are different that cause the air do also act weird around it. Interesting video

it is hard to curve because when you hit on the fur for example it is low friction and when you hit it on the demon skin it creates grip between your shoe and the ball which creates curve

Btw the different materials are the reason why it is so hard to spin, the HUGE difference in skin roughness make it very unstable and have HUGE differences depending on which faces is on the rotating side or not

basically, the jabulani is too round. when air resistance tries to act on it, the jabulani experiences what we call "drag crisis", resulting in uncontrollable and unpredictable flight paths. combine this with the chaos jabulani's different materials and the ball is essentially impossible to curve because some of the materials have damn near 0 friction, so no curve can be accomplished, whereas some materials have too much friction and so too much curve is put on the ball and you'll just miss anyway. hope this helps
