When you are going slow you can shorten up the line to the dinghy a lot. You want the dinghy riding behind the "hump" in the wake behind the engine (as you found, about 50 feet for a CD22 at speed). When going slow the wake is either not there or closer to the boat (but it can be bigger). You can also hip tie the dinghy when going slow. Having a dinghy tethered to the boat, even on a short line, is going to complicate locks especially when they are busy. Your best bet is an inflatable dinghy or kayak that can go on the roof. There have been C-Dory owners that have rigged a davit crane for lifting a dinghy onto the roof of a C-Dory. You don't mention whether you are doing the GL solo or not. This will determine the size of the dinghy. I would also consider whether you really need a dinghy or not. Most of the GL is pretty close to shore. There are plenty of places to tie up if you need/want to. Unless you are travelling with a dog that needs to get ashore a couple of times a day, I'm not sure of the utility of a dinghy. That's why I suggest an inflatable. You can inflate it when you need it and deflate it and fold it up when you don't (12v pump for paddle boards will be handy though).

Thank you for the observations and feed back. I will be doing the GL solo. No pets either. I am thinking along the lines of an inflatable as well. I was also beginning to wonder just how much I would NEED a dingy. Sounds like I would not need it much at all.

@@boatupdiningguy6334 With the draft you have on your vessel you won't have much if any use for a dingy. I towed one on the great lakes for years but when it came to close quarter maneuvers in channels and marinas I had the ability to put it up on my swim platform on its side.
