Really good video mate. I just read that Fort William have been relegated to NCL and Banks O Dee promoted in their place. Realistically it'll be a struggle for them to get back to HL football. All the obvious disadvantages that you highlighted, then consider the sort of club now competing with them - Banks have a decent stadium for that level and they play in Aberdeen, with a large population base to sustain their needs. Fort William do well to keep the club alive. Best of luck to them next season.

WE FINALLY MADE IT. After an 8.5 hour journey from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire myself, two brothers and a mate checked in at the local Premier Inn. A FANTASTIC weekend was had by all,the hospitality and banter with the locals was second to none. Unfortunately Fort William lost 2-1 to St.Duthus,whose goalie had an absolute blinder but at least the game was played, weather half-decent and pitch looked to be in fine condition. Looked to me like you really enjoyed your trip to FW, thanks again for this excellent video (I've had to watch it again it was that good). VERY interesting video mate, I've "studied" the Ft.William results (from a distance, Huddersfield)for over 20 years and sometimes could hardly believe the results. The story I heard years ago was that a lot of the "good sportsmen" of the area prefer to play Shiny,which leaves less talent to draw from. I was gutted when FW didn't compete in the Relegation Play-off,which could have secured their Highland League status. GREAT NEWS on the horizon though,my brother rang me recently "do you want to go to the FW Vs St.Duthus game on 2nd Nov?"...so that's where we're heading in less than 3 weeks. Seriously can't wait. Well done with the video,along with "Fight at the Fort" on BBC iPlayer it's an EPIC piece of film. Thank you

The chairman was spot on when he said its "different" you can swear your head off in a 50k crowd and not be heard but swear at a ground as small as that, everyone hears you plus home and away fans usually stand side by side so it can get heated. Ive been to sunderland matches at stadium of light with 49k there but also love going to watch my local northern league club Thornaby town fc play. Crowd is about 250-300 and the atmosphere is still brilliant just in a different way to massive stadiums. I love how close you are to the pitch you hear ever word players and managers say which you will never hear at a big stadium. The style of football is proper old school a bit like league football from the 70s when you were allowed to beat up i mean tackle opposition players. Every game theres usually a punch up.

A few months ago I went to see what was a home match for Fort William last season against Buckie Thistle, which was played in Buckie. I don't think that having to play all their home matches away last season helped them much. The teams were fairly evenly matched in the first half, and you wouldn't have known the teams were at complete opposite ends of the table, but Buckie completely dominated the second half and won 4-1 in the end. Fort William brought a decent crowd with them, so fair play to their supporters for travelling all that way to support their team.

And if you did the same route from Glasgow that we did in 2018 (there's only one real option !), I am sure you won't forget that drive in a hurry - incredible scenery and unreal driving conditions (although we did it in March!). The "Harry Potter Viaduct" was a nice bonus too - I hope you took time whilst there to visit the Glendfinnan Monument across the road which marks the site of a big moment in Scottish history, the Jacobite Uprising ... anyway let's get back to football !!

Love this video, I've always looked out for the 'Forts' results. If you're ever at the other end of the country, how about a trip to Fratton Park. We are one of the few grounds that still has an Archibald Leitch stand. The current refurbishment has exposed the Leitch iron work again. Portsmouth is the only league team to play on and Island. Also on Portsea Island, we have United Services Portsmouth, who I'm pretty sure are the only team in the non-league pyramid to play on a Naval base and Baffins Milton Rovers, who play within yards of Langstone Harbour, as well as Moneyfields, whose ground is currently being re-developed in partnership with Portsmouth in the Community.

Have you been to the highlands of Scotland. I have been to many states in the US the comparison you are making makes no sense, it is not a comparison

@@ericlennon Never been outside the east coast of the US. But every 2wks I drive 5hrs one way to spend 2-1/2 hours mowing a lawn, then it’s another 5hrs to get back to my bed. Long distances are a routine part of life in the US for those of us who don’t stay at home. There are single states here that are not just larger than Scotland, but larger than the whole of the UK. Imagine having to travel from Glasgow to London every other week for a match, we have teams that travel from Scotland to Italy on a regular basis throughout the season, it’s not just MLS, but at almost all levels of the pyramid. Each week. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ericlennon2 жыл бұрын
Hi J.K. I am familiar with the scale of the US , i have travelled around the country in my younger years. i am not claiming that the distances being discussed that Fort William have to travel are longer than those you mentioned, that would be wrong and stupid. Having experienced both situations i still don’t agree that the comparison is valid . These are 2 completely different experiences from what you mention. Distance is only one aspect of the difficult travel situation that fort William have to contend with, the journeys they have to make are quite hazardous and arduous for many reasons not just because of distance. The comparison you were making seemed to trivialize the point that was being mentioned by the author which is what i am addressing. Btw, if i was you i would outsource that lawn mowing.

On holiday at Fort William a number of years ago I decided to take in a game - typically, it was the only day in the fortnight with bad weather. Even more typically, Fort lost, 1-0 in a Highland League Cup game against Wick Academy. I remember I was able to walk right in, but I felt guilty, and so went out again and paid my entrance fee at the gate. Clubs at this level need every penny they can get. As a resident of nearby Mallaig, most people miss the fact that for the size of it's club, Fort William is actually quite a busy (and growing) town. As usual, however, Rangers and Celtic are the teams of choice for most here. The potential for building a decent competitive Highland League club is there. Yes, it's remote. But so is Wick and Brora, both of whom manage in the league just fine. Unfortunately so many local people and businesses see the club as an embarassment. The BBC documentary didn't help that to be honest. I've been to Claggan Park to see them a few times. The one thing they could do to improve the experience of the casual fan is bring the spectator boundaries closer to the pitch, as watching over the barriers is horrendous because the pitch is too far away. Great video and good luck to Fort William.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. A major problem for Fort William F.C is the fact that the locals are Shinty mad in the same way Glasgow or Liverpool is football mad Fort William has 2 Shinty clubs & the thing sporting wise most of them care about Is the Shinty derby between Fort William & Kilmallie It depends on where you are born in Fort William the upper or lower end of the town if you where born in the top end of Fort William you are a Kilmallie fan if you are born In the lower end of Fort William you are a Fort William fan. I went on a date with a Kilmallie years ago that's the only reason I know. So it must be very difficult for Fort William to get many fans to come along to games with the population of The Highlands not being particularly big in the first place. Fort William is in what is could The West Highlands most of the city's towns & villages in the Highlands are in The Eaat Highlands. It must be extremely difficult for Fort William F.C to just survive never mind prosper at any level. You should vist Belfast & vist as many Belfast clubs in a day there is lots of them. When are you going to vist Johnstone Burgh & Pollok ?. If you vist Johnstone there is a very good local amateur club Thorn Athletic aswell as Johnstone Burgh in Johnstone. Keep Safe Sam.

The issue with Fort William is not only geography but the fact they love having the gimmick of "Scotland's Worst Football Team " so its a waste of time and energy for every other team who has to play them. The players, management and staff enjoy having all the media attention for being such a bad team that losing is just part of the daily job for all the players. They should of been removed from the Highland league years ago however because of the structure it wasn't possible. Just a football club that isn't fit for purpose.

Hiya Robo, I feel sorry for teams like Fort William, I've been watching explaining European Soccer a guide for Americans, (put that into your computer and see what comes up and click on one of them),they should have promotion and relegation, I've heard them saying get rid of the Jets and Bengals, there a disgrace to NFL, things like that, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England

I am extremely so sad to see Fort William to be the worst team in Scotland,Europe and probably the world but fully hope that they would slowly bounce back to start winning more matches first by signing some good players and offload some unwanted ones from next season onwards and they are one of my favourite respective clubs daily and ever,good friends!!!🙏

It's a up hill battle for Fort William F.C as Shinty is the moment sport there is two Shinty clubs in the town is an intense rivalry they have for such a small town Shinty wise. I went out with a lady from Fort William back in 2011 that's how I know I dont many locals even know or care they have a football club Shinty is to Fort William what football is to Glasgow & Liverpool. Keep Safe.

This match couldn’t be played at their home ground unfortunately, due to the distances (and ferry journeys for Orkney!), but if you’d like to see how they’re doing in the North Caledonian League… kzbin.info/www/bejne/j16caoyQh9eAg9k
