A pommie soccer fan asked me Why dont they change the rules so if it goes between the posts its a goal, regardless of whether it touched the post. Similar to rugby and soccer. Fair question I thought.

You're right, umpiring has been very terrible this year, super inconsistent. We can't blame the individual umpire though, it's just the lack of direction from the AFL, having no head of football results in things like rule and perception changes 10-20times a season. Imagine being an umpire and having to learn and adopt a rule thats been changed for the 5th time. Can't form a consistent & habitual process if the AFL keeps changing rules.

The health of any organisation can be determined by how much time individuals spend on each of the two jobs they are doing. The two jobs are the one on the position description and the the other one is looking good and covering your ass. The most simple solution for the sling. Is to view chest to chest as perfect technique. The further you get from chest to chest, you get further into a slinging action. And of course your duty of care multiplies the further you get from chest to chest. I think this would clear up the vast majority of the fog concerning interpretation.

Eddie hates Swans. Everything a Swans player does is wrong in his eyes. He hates us because of the Academies. Tommy only changed direction to follow the trajectory of the ball. He accidentally hit McAdam. I feel sorry for McAdam that he got injured but this was a footy move to follow the ball not a deliberate bump. In fact McAdam actually runs into Tommy as he changes direction. Tommy does not change direction toward McAdam, quite the opposite he changed direction toward the ball, away from McAdam. That is clearly visible in all the footage. Eddie is blinded by his Swans hatred
@AusTerranX

The onus is on the player that is going to bump to NOT hit the player in the head. What the AFL said at the start of the year. But, we have different rules for different players/clubs in this league.
@wolftone57
@wolftone57 10 ай бұрын
@@AusTerranX The rule states that a player must initiate contact and that contact must be either; reckless or deliberate. McCartin's contact is neither because he does not bump. He just changes direction but so does McAdam and they converge. If was accidental contact and the Week and the Tribunal saw it for what it was. If McCartin had pulled out of that contest he would never get another game of football for anyone. He is running to make a genuine contest for the ball and in fact he gets the ball. At no time does he veer toward McAdam. In fact he veers away as the ball veered that way but McAdam's momentum takes him into McCartin as much as McCartin's momentum takes him to McAdam. You are obviously a disaffected Crows supporter. We get the worst of the deal most weeks. Most frees against and 4th least for in the AFL. That throw free against Gulden was an effing joke. He handballed that. The umpire was not in a position to see so should never have called it. But then again it was a hometown free wasn't it

If there are eight Executive General Managers under the CEO, I don't think it unreasonable to have a small department of ex - coach, player and umpire. I'd also give them a spokesperson delivering the 2-3 weekly press conferences so they can just answer technical questions after the initial brief. If you go with just ex-coaches then you have a really reduced pool of people who don't want to talk to or like footy media (likely current problem), hence spread the media commitments.

Or we get competent goal umpires. Viewers can't tell from TV, but when the ball hits the padding or the woodwork it makes a decent sound. Even the ball bending someone's pinky back makes a sound. The goal umpire heard nothing AND saw nothing but disallowed the goal anyway. While I'm ranting, I really hate when the goal umpire STRADDLES the goal line. It's sheer theatrical wankery and sometimes the ball hits the umpire's foot.

@@SquidCentaurinone of the Vic teams would agree with an even fixture, because the only way to have an even fixture would be to have every team play each other twice, with every team having a home game against each opponent. Vic teams won't give up the luxury of only having to travel interstate max of 4 or 5 times in the home and away season, despite the fact that all the non Vic clubs have to travel at least 10 times. It's a huge inequality. And because of the disproportionate amount of Vic teams compared to every other state, even if the system was adjusted to every team playing a home game against every opponent, Vic teams would STILL only have to travel interstate 8 times compared to interstate teams having to travel 16 times. It's an issue that can't be resolved when it comes to the equality of the games unless all games have to be played in neutral states, meaning no home games and a massive loss of revenue because people who support their local teams and go to home games aren't gonna travel interstate every week. Otherwise, it would come down to moving Vic teams interstate permanently to create an equal amount of teams in each state, which again, is something that won't ever happen.

Change the rule to the posts don't matter. Touches and goes through goal = goal, touches and goes through point posts = point, touches and comes back into play = play on. This would get rid of umpires having to guess, did it skim post or not and then dont need EDGE system, which is useless anyway because players jump into posts all the time. Also, change out of bounds/insufficient attempt to same as SANFL rule. If it comes off a boot and not touched before going over the boundary line, free kick to opposition. Again, a simple rule that everyone understands and wont be upset with an umpire that deems insufficient one time and not the next. The more rules where there is less umpires trying to interpret intent or if something MAY have glanced the post the better. Lastly, invest in High Frame Rate/High Def cameras around the goal. Never seen a blurry soccer ball or NFL footy when they go to frame by frame video reviews. There will always be mistakes, especially with holding the ball calls and such, but we could make the game a bit easier and then less ppl feel robbed of a win every week.

Freo had the points turned around against the Saints when there was a mistake that completely ruined a game so why not the same? I'm no Adelaide supporter but an apology and an umpire unfairly dismissed over something that happens almost every game is complete BS. If the 8 wasn't on the line, the ump would have been left alone and he should have been, it was a mistake but thats why we have technology in place to rectify them. The AFL did the ump dirty and said "I'm sowwy" and then wiped its hands clean. Absolute JOKE of a sporting organisation they NEVER take accountability for their own short comings. They remind me of every other corporate entity, either ignore the issues altogether or handball it down to the lowest employee to cop it. If every goal ump who cost a team a game was dismissed you'd have none left and that goes for the abbhorent umpiring on the ground that costs teams games each and every week.

Logically, every single decision throughout the year (correct or incorrect) impacts upon the final results at the end of the H&A season and finals. To look solely at the last decision or one of the last decisions and say that it was an injustice/ give it greater meaning makes absolutely no sense. Every umpiring/ fixture/ suspension decision culminates to the final result, just looking at the last one and crying out injustice is kinda stupid. Media bate.

the problem is Eddie, there have been so many rule changes over the years, and the speed of the game increases, that it has affected the quality of the umpiring, I would surmise that there is a direct correlation when it comes to that problem. The quality of the umpiring has been getting worse over the last 5 or so years, this year is simply bringing it to a head. For a sporting code that is professional, we cannot afford to see the quality of umpiring be at that level, it is really unacceptable, people can say "muh human error" until they are blue in the face, it doesn't change the fact that these so-called "human errors" are happing far too often in this game. wouldn't it be better to slow the game down a little, have fewer major rule changes, and then follow that up by making a move to improve the quality of the umpiring?

You are 100% right. Holding the ball needs to be simplified. If a player takes possession of the ball, is tackled and he drops the ball - it's holding the ball, no ifs or buts, none of this "It was knocked out of his hands" bs - it's incorrect disposal and holding the ball.

So it's ok for Collingwood to win all their games on tight margins, but Adelaide are required to win by a fat margin before they're allowed to play finals? A win is a win, be it 1 point or 100, and Adelaide were denied 2 this year by umpiring decisions that the ALF has publicly apologized for. Also most of their close margins came against the top 4 teams, Collingwood twice, Brisbane and Melbourne all within a goal. And three of those were away games. With a 'normal' level of luck they would have nabbed one or two of those games, plus the win against Sydney, and be sitting comfortably in sixth spot right now, and possibly playing for a home final.

You wouldn’t be saying that if it happened to your team, and it very well could have. Just thank the crows for being sacrificed. Imagine if we took your advice though in all seriousness - “just win some more games, it’s normal for a clear goal to be ruled out by the umpires and nothing to be done about it. The issue is crows not winning enough games, I don’t see any other issue besides that. The system works fine”. It’s not about crows playing the victim with taking the hard road to get to the finals, it’s solely an issue that stopped the sport altogether which was extremely avoidable

doesn't matter what rule you have, the pies and melbourne will do the opposite and get away with it. I've been watching this game for 50 years, out on the full, foot on the line, except for track or oliver, or any pies player, stand the mark, except for track oliver or any pies player, Disent LMAO, Pies players yell argue point with every umpire , Throwing the ball, Petraka, Oliver, never have a sore hand, because they never handball it, track has 80% throws to 20% handballs, and hes a fav for a Brownlow, what a joke. It's almost like the AFL wants Melbourne teams to win, It's almost like Melbourne teams get the right decisions at the right times, at the right part of the game, Maybe that's why they still call the other teams, INTERSTATE teams, without realizing that they are INTERSTATE to us, food for thought. Protected Zone, Push in the back, Frontal contact in the square, Unfair bouces, Play on when supposed to be bought back, 3 metres over the mark for some teams, Blocking is OK for some teams, If Toby Greene did half of what other players do, he would get 9 weeks, every week, Mason coxs, Knees to the kidneys, not watching the ball, Play on. Charlie Kurnow wouldn't have 2 goals this year without free kicks, and he will win the Coleman lol, Tom Hawkins just pushes anyone and everyone in the back, Alir Alir, would not have 1 intercept mark, without his 2 hands in the back of the opposition, I think the umpiring is a disgrace, and if they want to be paid so much money, they need to be professional, and if the EF up, get fined , and go to the tribunal, just like the players have to.

The point is, this makes the game look amateur. We HAVE the technology to review such decisions and we didn't use it. It shouldn't be up to the single umpire to ask for the review... there are many ways to auto implement the video replay in such close decisions: -it should either be automatic in the last 2 mins of games so they're not decided by human error (like NFL) - let coaches use a challenge to request video reviews like NBA if they disagree with umpires - just automatically video review close calls like that while play continues and then alter the score and bring ball back to the middle if it was the goal (like NBA does with all 3 pointers to check if foot is behind the line)

Footy is in decline because of the AFL’s over reach and micro management of a great game. They have become football unfortunately. The decline has been exacerbated by the AFL’s politicisation of the game in their demands of clubs, players and fans to subscribe to and follow the AFL’s lead in promoting woke agendas. The umpires are another issue but are also having a very negative impact on the reputation of the AFL. Most supporters are pretty easy to please….just give a decent competition with predictable rules, decent umpiring decisions and no politics.
