This is only the second video of yours I’ve watched Rob and have say I’m hooked mate.There’s nothing fake about you buddy.You are so normal and natural and get just as excited when you get a bite as a ten year old kid catching his first ever fish at the end of a harbour wall.I can’t wait for your next video Rob mate!!

Thanks mate, that’s very kind. If the excitement goes, I’ll stop fishing 🤣🎣

Storm is hitting us here now in Ireland, thanks for the video today, made the rain lashing against the window go away for a while.

Thanks mate, the storm isn’t here yet but it’s not a going to sea day!

As you say better to have had a go than not. And as I often say to myself, the poorer days make the good ones even more enjoyable! All the best.

A very pleasant video. Well done on getting out in such cold weather, it needs to be a bit warmer for me.

Thanks Chris, luckily, there was virtually no wind so it was pretty nice out there after the very cold start!👍

I fish off The Maine on my kayak. Hard on anything other than small tides, but often good returns. Love your updates.
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
That’s interesting to hear. I’ve fished The Maine but only caught lots of small pollack and I did have a small codling, 3lb-ish, a short way off it. What are you catching there?
@martyn189911 ай бұрын
@fishingsalcombe I guess, similar to you regarding pollack although, a couple have hit 8lb. One solitary codling! Mostly, get stuff adjacent to it and frequently 7+ species in a session (best was 10). I love red gurnard and downtide of it they are found, but more reliably, a further half mile out. In one session, I caught blonde, small eyed, and undulate! Along with hounds, I've also had spurdogs and usual wreef candidates. My best single catch was a turbot of just under 5lb, caught within 50m of the wreck. Not sure if you ever fish the Skaala too? A bit deeper, can't say had much joy on it though. Unfortunately, after 10 years, my GPS/FF finally died, losing my marks. Trying to get its replacement, now discontinued, isn't easy. Only recently came across your channel and great to see marks I fish, or are close by. As I'm getting older, I'll need to transition to a boat😊
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
@@martyn1899 Thanks for that info, I’ll have to re-visit The Maine! That’s a shame that you lost your marks, if you go for a replacement plotter I would highly recommend getting relief shading. You’ll easily re-find your marks and the detail is a game changer. Tight lines 👍

@fishingsalcombe hi. Thank you for the tip. I've found a replacement Garmin and a little reluctant to use a different model now because the sonar shoe, wiring and bracket are all set up for this model; a different one would mean a bit of rework. Next project will have better tech of course. If I was to paddle blindly out of Salcome on to the 50m depth, does anything live there this time of the year? It's amazing how quickly drops off.

Yes it does hold fish. The Soudan is just off Starehole Bay, then directly south from that, around a quarter of a mile, is a fairly prominent rock/pinnacle that can hold a mixed bag of inshore fish. From that rock to Prawle point is a line of reef features. If you don’t want to paddle that far out, The Range, just east of Starehole, has plaice, small turbot and rays. 18:23

Couldn't you use a live Pouting as bait for the Ling?
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
Fair point, they were a bit big to use live but I could have used them as fresh bait rather than the frozen that I had 👍
@stanwilson808911 ай бұрын
Do you ever fish closer to the shore?
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
I do, certainly in the summer for bass and mackerel but the mackerel are not around and the tide was wrong for bass so I thought the wrecks gave me the best chance. 👍

Must have been Friday, I fished the outer edge of the Skerries and were rewarded with some decent Spurs, and whiting to 3lb, but it was cold on Bluefin (Ribcraft 585).
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
Yes it was Friday mate. I bet it was cold without a cuddy for a bit of protection! That’s good size whiting you managed to find. I love fishing the Skerries but I need a 2-tide day and calm seas to make it worth while from my mooring. That didn’t happen at all last year but maybe the weather will be kinder this year? 👍🎣
@lbt848311 ай бұрын
Yes, calm sea for me also, launching From Teignmouth, so about 18Nm to the start of the banks. All the best for the New Year Rob, and we will see you out there (seen you in the past). You can always find me on AIS.

Are you allowed to keep tuna?
@fishingsalcombe11 ай бұрын
No, my understanding is that as a regular recreational angler you’re not even allowed to target them at the moment. There is a proposal being considered for catch and release only for this year but I don’t think it’s agreed yet and no doubt there will be conditions to be met.
