I also own this unit, 3 years now, and love it. Everything he has said is 100 % accurate …. It is so easy to use, so easy to change from dethatch to scarify …. Bag does fill too quickly so it will clog and dump it back on the lawn …. My “hack” is to put a bungee cord down near the unit, from handle to handle and rest the discharge door on top of the bungee cord so it stays open…. Then simply go over it with my mower set on a high setting to “vacuum” it all up…. Great product and worth the price for sure. Good video Lawngineer!!

Thanks! I love the bungee cord hack. Gonna give that a try.

I bought mine 2 yrs ago. Absolutely love it. Have a 5k sq ft lawn. Used it to dethatch and did a renovation for barenburg rpr. Works perfectly. The bag fills fast so i dont use it. But for the money.. great unit that works really well. They do have a battery version and wider.

I love my Sunjoe Dethatcher Vince picked it up for $35 on Craigslist a few years back. Works every time! If the unit shuts off from overheating just go back and mow up / rake what you’ve done ✅ usually cools off enough in that time. Happy New Year 🎆 sir 😎

I only have the Greenworks dethatcher. Naturally learned of the Sunjoe afterward. But my dethatcher does a pretty good job. Dethatcher scratches the surface well enough for seed, especially using a covering over it anyway.

I also have a similar model to the Greenworks (Earthwise)… good unit.

Vince, I love my unit, have had it for about 3 years. I use the scarify side for my eagles 🦅 Bermuda grass in the back yard and my rye/fescue in the front and side yard. I just wish they made something for aeration.

Nice! How do you like the Bermuda grass?
@johngrinnell10 ай бұрын
@@TheLawngineer I am using the Tahoma 31 Bermuda grass plugs from tuckahoe and unfortunately It hasn’t been spreading as rapidly as I want. I have been having issues with drainage and really bad dirt (Marlton) so I am trying to aerate as much as I can. (Hence why I want a cheaper aerator) but from the plugs I planted it looks great.

Which is better for reseeding, the scarifier or the dethatcher? I’ve heard it each way. Thanks…
@donaldguthals92667 ай бұрын
First, use the dethatcher IF your lawn has buildup of dead grass on top of the soil, then use the scarifier, because it cuts slits in the soil surface, about 1/4 inch deep, about one inch apart. When you spread the seed, some of it will fall into the slits, where it is protected and should germinate properly. These SunJoes are a must have for lawn care. It will pay for itself in a couple uses.

How often do you dethatch? I usually cut my lawn at either 3 and a quarter or 3 and a half inches. How low should I go in preparation for using the dethatcher or scarifier?
@TheLawngineer3 ай бұрын
I typically do it annually. I’ll usually lower the deck to about 2 inches. Do it when the grass is vigorously growing and not under other stress.

What’s best month to do this job?

I like doing it before seeding. Either in the spring or fall. When the grass is growing.

What's the best depth to use?
@TheLawngineer5 ай бұрын
If you want to seed, I'll go on the lowest setting. If I'm just maintaining and picking up thatch, I'll leave it on the '0' setting which is the soil level.

Anyone run into sod netting with these? Curious if it bogs up or cuts through a lot of the net.

What type of grass? Some say not to dethatch Bermuda.
@TheLawngineer3 ай бұрын
I’ve heard conflicting things about using this on Bermuda (or other grasses with stolons). One argument is that it will lift up the stolons injuring the plant. Others say it really helps the plant grow vigorously. I’ve never done it. I’m using it on cool season grass types.

@TheLawngineer6 ай бұрын
You know what, there are two schools of thought on this. Some fear that running a machine like this will pull up the stolons and damage the plant. Others rave that it really helps thicken things up. I personally don't have experience with warm season turf to tell you one-way or the other.
