In the backstory of her character, actually, it's quite ironic. Her motivation for even BECOMING as powerful as she was is that she had challenged Steiner to a duel during her earlier days in the Military and lost horrendously. From then on she spent her days training insanely hard, and eventually outclassed even Steiner, though she never looked at HIM as anything but an equal really. Not until the events of the game forced him to essentially side with the princess because she was doing what was right, and eventually brought them to work together once more.
