One of Apple TV’s most impressive original series is co-creator and writer Ronald D. Moore’s sci-fi drama For All Mankind. For the first three seasons, the show has taken viewers on a journey that only toed the sci-fi line with their alternate history timeline, but Season 4 is venturing where no man has ever gone before. Before the first episode premiered on the streamer, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with Moore about the future of For All Mankind and just what exactly sci-fi means to such a grounded story.
By the end of Season 3, For All Mankind officially reached the 21st century. NASA’s Happy Valley is a fully established Mars base where former rivals have become allies as the program shifts its focus to more pressing matters. The Space Race is settled, but the mission has changed: harness asteroids and mine them for precious resources. Naturally, this new common goal will present new tensions, as well as opportunities for the Everyman to join the astronauts and scientists among the stars. Season 4 introduces Toby Kebbell, Tyner Rushing, Daniel Stern, and Svetlana Efremova and sees the return of familiar faces like Joel Kinnaman, Wrenn Schmidt, Krys Marshall, Edi Gathegi, Cynthy Wu, and Coral Peña.
In their interview, Moore talks about Season 4 moving into unexplored territory, such as “moon bases and Mars bases that never existed and different kinds of spacecraft and propulsions and nuclear fusion.” Best known for his work on Star Trek, Outlander, and Battlestar Galactica, he also discusses whether there are plans to introduce the starship, which sci-fi elements For All Mankind won’t be dealing with, and whether this series could be a prequel to a new Star Trek type series. He shares the character storyline he’s excited for fans to see, the importance of Kebbell’s Miles Dale, and what’s next for him over at Disney+.

I pray to the Apple God that they let them see this through the planned 7 seasons, but on the other hand I kinda never thought it would still be going. I've literally tried to get everyone I know to watch it but I havn't been very successful in that regard. Before Severance and Monarch this was the only thing that I'll subscribe to Apple for, but I've used it to watch some of their other content and Apple now ranks pretty highly on my streaming service ranks.

I was watching with my friend and when I saw the new guy show up in his jumpsuit and he had the name Miles on it, I knew he was screwed. Ronald D Moore made Mile O'Brien suffer for years on Deep Space Nine. He has made Ed suffer for decades on this show and now that Ed is an old man and about to face the sweet release that is death, Ronald created a new Miles to sufferings onto. This poor basta is about to experience psychological pain the like he can't even fathom.

With building up Mars, it makes me think of the Expanse. I also think Ed stayed on Mars is as a punishment. I think he feels guilty that he let Danny down. When NASA grounded him he never should had brought him to Mars, especially Danny’s dad was his best friend. Ed also saw how Danny’s dad lost it when he was stranded on Moon 🌖…and Ed left him alone in the North Korea capsule. Danny messed up, but Ed should have followed company policy and sent him to the base station when he injured his hand. Also when Ed realized Danny was abusing the pain medication 💊 he should have grounded him and sent him up to the base station. Keeping him on the ground allowed Danny to cause the disaster that damaged their recovery ship and killed two astronauts. I think Danny found the North Korean gun and killed himself since his life was over.

In this interview, they talk about this possibly leading into Star Trek. Watching the show, I can’t help but feel how this is a prequel to The Expanse, especially in this fourth season. In my head, we’re seeing the beginnings of the Belters, and with the dissent happening on Mars, the seeds of the Martian separatists.

For All Mankind is currently my favorite Sci-Fi series which for a late 80s early 90s kid is a huge deal, but Ronald connection to the series is connective tissue between this series and Star Trek which why I love it so much. I need to see this series reach the later seasons because they are starting to reach a narrative similar to The Expanse which is pretty freaking amazing. I could see the last season of this series in the same vein as a Freelancer or Cowboy Bebop.

I always look forward to your interviews with Ronald D. Moore at the start of each season, I love this show and he is one of the best showrunners of the genre. I hope you can do a deep dive with him after the season is over.

Thanks for interviewing this amazing artist. I haven't watched past Season 2, since we don't normally subscribe to Apple TV (watching these interviews by skipping whenever I might hear a spoiler is tough), and am about to start Season 3 with my folks. I was very sad Ronald D. Moore stopped being show runner after Season 2, but it looks like he's still very much involved, even if he's not officially writing anything, and that's exciting because I've always loved his work. I'm very happy Season 1's come out on Blu-Ray and bought a copy, and can't wait to get more -- hopefully in 4K, one day soon.

I thought this was more likely to be a prequel to the Expanse. Jamestown is referenced in the Expanse albeit a poster in S5 ep1.

My question - he loves his strong female leads (which I love). I would like to know who she is. He seems to write her in each of his projects. Is she his partner and wife? His mother? A mentor? Who is she? We want to know!

Given how so little effort and interest is shown for the wide open spaces of the US, South Africa and Namibia . . . and Central Asia, I am at a loss as to why Mars -- other than it has a solid surface -- with no water, no atmosphere and half of Earth's gravity, is such an attraction to the future development of mankind :-)

I’d rather the show go the route of the Expanse instead of Star Trek. I want the human conflict and ideologies clashing to continue being a theme. I think the idea of the extended Cold War is so much more intriguing especially with the possibility of new space nations.

[7:10] Had as much expense and effort been applied to California City, Mojave, that hasn't moved on that much since 1965, and lies all of 90-miles up the interstate from downtown LA. Apple and mankind would actually have something to show for it all :-)

I don't know, I think Moore has done better things since Star Trek that I think he's best left to work on his concepts rather than being constrained by franchise that's so muddy at this point.

Given current merger talks between Paramount Global and Warner Brothers Discovery, it’s more likely that JJ Abrams will end up running the Star Trek franchise. Or he could let Alex Kurtzman continue on with Trek while he’s busy making crappy Cloverfield movies.

And judging by what happened to BS Galactica and FAM, RDM hasn’t really been that masterful when he’s running things. I love FAM and all the performers in it, but its writing is stretching credulity.

How about RDM apologize for the steaming pile that was the second half of Season 03: Sojourner surviving collision with Russian ship but then breaking on landing, how Helios magically found water on Mars but NASA didn't, how getting Kelly and her baby off Mars was a total rip off of the film version of Andy Weir's "The Martian," and WTF NORTH KOREA ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?

5:32 I would like to ask a question about "staying in our time lane" as opposed to other "science fiction drama" with alien and stuff. I get that. But right now, the evil intent that is in the back drop burner for the whole of 4 seasons, came to life in the evil roscosmos Nazi chief, invasion of Ukraine, nuclear threat in space and on earth by the evil empire of kleptocratic nations all over the world. A star trek future is based on somehow understanding of human race that corruption crime and evil does not pay. In fact we see the opposite, a lot of Idiocracy-like endeavors all over the world, where truth is evil and lie is king: Venezuela, Nicaragua, South Africa, etc in the wake of China ruzzia and Iran trempling democracy and basic human surviving mechanism. Is this video, dialogue , out of touch? @Collider Interviews

Drama Drama Drama and then a few spaceship animations in between...it's unbearable. With every step the characters take, there are what feels like three dramas. I wonder how they even managed to build rockets when they're constantly whining and arguing. This series never disappoints me in being bad. It is labeled as a sci fi drama but still this series is sooooo bad and sooooo annoying that I can't watch it. I try every new episode but I can never stand a whole episode of the drama garbage.
