I actually do these vocal techniques but most of what he was doing sounded like he was using to much of his throat. If you do it right you actually open your throat without hurting your actually vocal chords and you use something called a false chord.

Of course Mike is using his diaphragm, theirs no way you can scream like that with jus ur throat,(you would blow ur chords) that's just how they sound raw live. You use compression, EQ's, etc on the album to get rid of the raspy sound and to clean it up
