FYI the smiling ghost doesn't actually try to kill you. Even though it's super fast, once it reaches you it will just fly in circles around your character. Don't panic when you see it barreling towards you.

Here's some jungle tips since you're ok with a bit of mechanics spoilage: Moon challenge and black market can't show up in the same floor iirc I don't think any Children of the forest show on 2-1 if you go in any subspace in a black market floor you can hear the black market music but muffled, it's quite different from a regular jungle subspace music

This is correct. Also Black Market doesn’t show up in 2-1 either as far as I’m aware, so really on that floor you only need to focus on collecting treasure/items and Monty

Yep. Children of the forest always show up on 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4. It also drives me crazy the amount of people I watch play this that don't notice the black market music in the subspace, lol.

Extra tek: Monty is always inside the black market when it appears, so no dog almost guarantees black market (I say almost because there could be a caveman/Tun selling him)

Yeah, I think Volcana needs love in general. Unless they come out and just say "it's less of an alternate and more an intentional hard path", if it's supposed to be an even close to equivalent alternate path, there's just no incentive. Yeah, guaranteed cape. For that, you give up the eye (where you keep it in the jungle), give up all the items in the black market (which they actually just BUFFED by resetting the market prices to 1-1), lose a much higher likelihood of paste (due to big spiders), and give up the children of the forest. It's just not even close to worth. At the very least I think they should guarantee a shop spawns on every level through Volcana. That would make up a little for the black market loss in that path.

There's a few ways to see if your floor has a black market, the first way is to see if in a background cave, if it has a different music track, and the second of course is seeing if it blinks. If you have a challenge on the floor the black market won't be on that one.

Happy/chill ghost will only circle you while angry/sad will try to attack like the first ghost

About the death to ghost in the first run: The smaller ghosts have different mechanics which are valuable to know, since you could have escaped them. The happy ghost is fast BUT it will never actively chase you. It will close in and then circle around you. Unless you jump into it, it will not touch you. The sad ghost on the other hand will chase you down and hit you, BUT it’s way slower. In the case of that run, you only had the happy ghost close to you so you had time to get to a clearing with more space to manoeuvre before sad ghost caught up. There’s also a 3rd phase to the ghost, one minute after the ghost appears. (30 sec for 2nd phase). The 3rd phase has FOUR ghosts. One happy, one sad, one scared and one angry. These have similar mechanics to the two ghosts in phase 2, but shuffled around a bit. The angry ghost being fast AND actively chasing you (yikes)

You gotta be patient when going down the drill chain, let most of the lava flow down. I usually wait until 2:30ish to finally go down (unless there's clearly no lava left)

This is sound advice and I usually go at about 2:00 myself, though it wouldn't have done much good as it was a falling magma man that did NL in. Only good defense against that is to practice full drops from the top all the way to the bottom so you spend as little time on the shaft as possible. I hope they tweak the volcana drill at some point, it's one of the most un-spelunky parts of the game.

I don't use the drill anymore because of dying to lava, I look for a crush trap at the bottom and use that and some bombs now, much safer, also, if you just use bombs you can get down for around 6, hitting tnt to help the processes where I can

I think if you shoot Quillback on the top or bottom of the character model the bombs wont explode because they spawn in the middle of the model when he dies, but I have no proof of it, it jsut seems to work for me
