This video is dedicated to the memory of Frederick, one of our viewers, who tragically took his own life at the age of 16. Our thoughts go out to his mother Chloe, his family and friends. RIP.

Today we are completely stunned by the debut puzzle from a new constructor, pieguy and his sudoku Lattice. This is a "normal" killer sudoku and yet the logic is absolutely incredible.

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits cannot repeat within a cage.

Hi Simon, pieguy here. Thank you for the feature, and that was a beautiful tribute for Frederick at the end. The logic with the 9 cages went mostly as intended, but here's a nice way to wrap your head around it: r3c2 + 1 = r6c3 r6c3 + 1 = r3c4 r3c4 + 1 = r6c7

Thanks for this - I noticed that the 9 vs 10 thing meant the different digits must be consecutive but I don't think I'd fully formed the communication of that around the grid so it's nice to know I was at least on the right track! It's a beautiful puzzle, I thought the overall shape of the cages was very pleasing on the eye.

I understand it much easily by saying since both digits of B and both digits of C goes into 9 cages, then they can't contain a 4 (will force a 5) nor a 9 😉

Rip Frederick. The announcement at the start of the video and the tribute at the end were very emotional. Here's a personal experience and I hope someone finds it helpful. I've recently gone through a period of very dark thoughts that were leading me directly to taking my own life. In the end, I had to talk to someone. I had to get help. That was the hardest thing to admit, the hardest thing to do... ask for help. I didn't want to seem weak, didn't want my family to worry about me. I was stuck in a negative loop of emotions and there was only one way out. Sometimes I still am in a way. It's hard, it's not like a cold that goes away after a short while. But admitting to myself that I could not solve it on my own was the first big step. Knowing that I didn't have to face this challenge alone; that I have help, both professionally and from loved ones who would jump through a fire to help. I still have a long way to go, but I'm not alone. And it will get better!

This is a particularly sad video for me, I discovered this channel mid-lockdown when I was in a very dark place mentally, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that. I found having the daily routine of watching a solve really gave me something to look forward to each day, and it steadily led to me rebuilding confidence in myself. It's horrific to think that this young man could see no light at the end of the tunnel, I hope we'll all remember a bit of Frederick in each puzzle we solve.

It's easy to say from my situation, but if anyone out there ever feels like suicide is the only solution - reach out to someone, ANYONE...Sometimes all it takes is an understanding ear listening to you. RIP Frederick and prayers out to his family.

A few gentle reminders for a well-meaning community that I love: • Calling a hotline is very, very hard. Sometimes picking up a phone is impossible. • Even when you're strong enough to manage it, the lines are often busy. Sometimes they're busy all day. A lot of people in the world are hurting. The sense of rejection you get from that busy tone can be unbearable. Calling more than once can be unthinkable. • Suicidal thoughts aren't always one battle. Sometimes it's a years long or decades long war. Having people promise you that things will get better when you have historical proof of how wrong they are is very, very lonely because it reinforces the constant feeling that no one can possibly understand. It can also feel very dismissive. • You don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes there are no answers.

It can also feel very dismissive." This. This. A thousand times this. A lot of very well meaning people have done a lot of damage with thoughtless words like that. If you care, tell them that you care. Tell them that you're there whenever they need you (assuming that's true). Just don't tell them something that they'll perceive as obviously untrue. You'll lose credibility and drive them further away. Source: I've been through this (and I still honestly have no idea how I made it out alive).

@@steve470 I think people don't realize they say these things to depressed people because they're trying to escape the pain of the depressed person. It's a convenient out for the speaker at the expense of the person who actually needs help and nothing more. It's ugly but true. I agree with what you've said and would add that just listening and finding ways to acknowledge the pain and impossibility without trying to solve it have always been more helpful. "F***, that must hurt." "Dude, that sounds impossible. I'm glad you've made it this far." "Can I take out your garbage for you?" If you've got the rapport with the person to bitch about the little inconveniences of life that feel monumental, that can also be okay. And Steve, I'm glad you managed the impossible. I'm glad you're here. Bravo, my friend.

Firstly and most importantly RIP Frederick. To the puzzle: It was amazing. At about 42:00 Simon got the right result with flawed logic: If A was three seven, three would not go in the thirteen cage, seven would. This would make B four six and force the next nine cage to be four five leading to the same problem as in the two eight scenario.

I think that the easy way to map out the issue with the 46 and 19 that Simon is dealing with in around 44:12, is to realize that BOTH digits in B and BOTH digits in C end up in different versions of a 9 cage. Therefore neither B nor C can be 19 or 46, because 09 and 45 both cannot go into the 9 cages.

I loved this one. Solved it in testing. It’s a lot easier if you use two distinct letters or colors for each pair, because then you don’t need to check all of the 4-pair cycles. Amazing puzzle though and great job Simon!

RIP Frederick Been there myself and it could have turned out the same way. My thoughts go out to his family. To anyone reading this, Reach out for help, phone a suicide hotline or talk to someone. It will get better. I am thankful I survived my attempts but sadly many aren't so lucky. 😢

I loved the logic on this puzzle. I recommend this one a lot, specially for those who prefer puzzles with a simple ruleset, but that still manage to blow your mind.

Wow. It is hard to speak of the unspeakable with as much delicacy and compassion as Simon did here. I never realized that loving puzzles correlated so well with being a decent human being. Who’d have guessed? The comments are almost all so kind and thoughtful. Where did all the KZbin assholes go? Is someone deleting their comments as soon as they arrive?

The mere fact that this community is immune to the "normal" strife and flamewars is a beacon of hope in an otherwise rather bleak world. The tragic news of today shows that we are able to share pain as well as joy. In this community we can be our true selves - which is almost always a damn sight better than the make-believe persona that gets you followers and ephemeral notoriety.

Thank you Simon. You always so kind. That poem, and your gentle handling of that grief-filled news was so touching. Again, Simon, you prove yourself to be both brilliant and all heart. Thank you for sharing the reading at the end - it was hopeful and at the same time very sad, and it points out that what we see presented by a person about how they are doing may not be the whole story. Hearing of someone taking their life will never be easy, especially at such a criminally young age. I hope that anyone who reads this will find the strength to reach out before taking such a drastic step. I know I've been there before, and have luckily come out on the other side unscathed. There will always be people that care. Maybe not in your own life, but I'm sure here in this tight-knit community there's someone who's willing to give a listening ear. I know at least that I am. So please, I beg of you, reach out. My timezone is western Europe for those who would like to know that before reaching out. I'm not a licensed therapist, just a lowly electrician, but I've lived quite a life, so I'm sure I've got at least some insight that might help. Lots of love from Amsterdam 🧡

A beautiful tribute to a beautiful life gone too early. In my darkest moments, a passage from a book helps me to see the light. It's from THE COMFORT BOOK by Matt Haig. The chapter is titled Rain. You don't have to be positive. You don't have to feel guilty about fear or sadness or anger. You don't stop the rain by telling it to stop. Sometimes you have to let it pour, let it soak you to your skin. It never rains forever. And you know that, however wet you get, you are not the rain. You are not the bad feelings in your head. You are the person /experiencing/ the storm. The storm may knock you off your feet. But you will stand again. Hold on.

In light of the loss of Frederick, I will certainly be making an extra effort to give a few more minutes of my time to family, friends, colleagues and strangers who may be in desperate need of contact, someone to listen or simply acknowledge them. It is astounding how major a positive impact can be achieved through minor effort.

I loved the Logic in this puzzle, it surprised me that you became so focussed on the cycle when there was an easier way to spot it! The fact that the “B” domino had to make 2 different 9 cages out of its digits (BC and AB) which couldn’t be 4-5 or include a 9, then the “B” domino couldn’t be 1-9 or 4-6 because one of the 9 cages would have to use the 9 or a 4-5

Brilliant puzzle. I had to watch Simon solve it as I was stuck trying to work out the break in. Seems so obvious once you work it out but it is amazing.

My heart goes out to this family, and I sincerely hope they have support in dealing with this tragedy. I lost my 19yo son almost 5 years ago, and losing him impacted me and all of my family a lot.

Just under 45 minutes for me. I had to keep changing which striping had colours cos I was getting confused but it came together very nicely. Lovely puzzle, thanks for sharing it.

RIP Frederick. I hope and pray you are doing well in Heaven, solving sudokus we could only dream of. And to Frederick’s family, I hope and pray you all go through this, feel and express every emotion you want and need to, get all the support you need, and heal. And to everyone, I sincerely hope we can make this world a better place - one that takes mental health seriously, one that doesn’t leave people behind, and one that exhibits the kind of community that we have in the sudoku world. Too often, when someone dies of suicide, we talk about their mental health as an isolated thing. I think we need to talk more about how we can make this world more bearable, easier to survive, more worth living in. I hope and pray we get closer and closer to that kinder, more liberated reality. Love all these video, and I am a recent convery from normal sudoku to killer sudoku. A have watched many of your tutorials, and do a puzzle a day dailykillersudoku. I am really struggling with seeing the patterns when using arithmetic to work out numbers. Any chance you could do a new tutorial just on killer patterns and how to spot the hidden elimination numbers from certain boxes with a countdown of maybe top techniques. Keep up the brilliant videos, I really enjoy watching you both solve puzzles I would never be able to solve.

44:00 what's wrong with this (what makes it different to the 2 8 problem) is a 3 in a 2-cell 13 cage; the 9 cage should have 3 6, not 2 7, and that rolls you into the problem you found with 2 8.

yeah ... I have expected to notice that both values from B and C are in two 9 groups, therefore, neither of B or C can be 19 or 46 because it would cause an issue it would be logical explanation worthy of Simon and not "try and see" with a lucky error not breaking the solution

Yes, I saw that too. If, as it should, the 7 goes in the 13 cage, the 46 problem appears later showing that AA cannot be 37.

The truth is many of us have been where Frederick was, perhaps many more than a sixteen-year-old might suppose. I have to start off saying I would never have even started this one without Simon's help, however it never fails to amuse me when he points out a very important piece of logic and then mostly ignores it. Simply following the "ropes" back and forth around the grid would have placed most of the digits within minutes of discovering the 9 and 10 cages.

I just thought that c and b couldn't be 19 or 46 because both of their digits had to work in the 9 cages, if you made b 19, one cage could have the 1 but the other had the 9. A and d only have one of their digits on the 9 cages, so no problem.

43:12 Simon put 3 in the 13 cage (which is obviously impossible) and therefore made the following cages consist of different numbers. Went back there and still didn’t spot the mistake. So technically he didn’t disprove 37 pair in box9 as an option. It would probably break some other way but still not quite a flawless solution. RIP Frederick and especially condolences to his parents and family, can’t even imagine how heartbroken they must be.

Sadness aside - Simon really made it complicated by expressing the 10 pairs with a single letter. Otherwise the relationship in the 9-cages with the 19/46 pairs would have been immediately obvious.

2 hours after starting over to clean up some coloring. I do admit that I looked at David's thing about which cell was one more than another - but I had discovered some of that via, a+b = 9 and a+c = 10 => c = b + 1. Otherwise, I did it by myself. This one was quite hard for me, but not impossible. The 35 cage shapes quickly led to coloring some virtual 10 cages. It also led to some observations that every row in the cages was the same 3 sets in, e.g., the top 3 rows. And similar around the puzzle. I made some deductions about which of the colors had to go in the 9 cage or the 10 cage. Not explaining that well because I can't picture it now. Then eventually I concatenated the which one is bigger thing above to get two possibilities. Two colors had both their values appear in the 9 cages, which ruled out 46 and 19 from them - because 9 can't go in the 9 cage and 4 would have to go with 5 to get 9, and 5 couldn't appear in the 9 cages, as they were all colored with the 10 cage values. Felt like a lot of work, but also like I was barely grasping for purchase or trying to swim to the surface. Not sure which metaphor to go with, but I didn't drown and didn't fall off the cliff, but it was very sketchy whether I'd survive. Maybe I cheated a bit with the looking at David's comment. It's amazing how a little hint or a nudge can help. In other videos, Simon says something like maybe: and gestures at an area and I have a new question to consider, which he has barely begun to form, but it yields fruit and I get a few more steps.

55:45 on the timer, but my internet was freezing and the timer kept running, so I'm going to guess about 5 minutes less. The way I started was to look at r4c7-r6c7, as well as the ropes in columns 7-9. I penciled the 13 cage and used it to consider what was in the 9 cage above it. As I followed it around the grid to the various 9 cages and 10 pairs, I was able to eliminate possibilities until only the 2-7 pair was left in box 2, and a 4-9 pair in the 13 cage. From there, I was able to figure the 9 cage in box 5 and worked outward from there. Awesome puzzle! My condolences to Frederick's family. There is never a good time to say goodbye to a loved one.

An easier way of looking at the values of A, B, C and D. Both values of B and both values of C are used in the three 9 cages. Whereas only one A and one D is used so must correspond to 6 from (64) and 1 from (19).
