Cracking The Cryptic

Жыл бұрын

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Unusually Mark tested today's puzzle, Qi Manifest by Xendari. To say he enjoyed it would be an understatement and so, in this video, Simon has a go at it. Let's just say it's awesome!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Shade the grid using two colours, such that all instances of each colour are orthogonally connected, and no 2x2 area is completely one colour. Blue lines must have an equal sum N within each colour they pass through. If a blue line passes through a colour multiple times, each individual pass sums to N. All lines must cross colours at least once. Two digits separated by a black dot have a ratio of 2. Not all dots are given.

Thank you for your solve! :) Your solve path was spot on. I agree with your statements at the end that this would be a far harder puzzle without knowing the secrets of Yin Yang - it’s only because of the popularity of YY x Sudoku hybrids (shoutout to Agent’s excellent Killer series!) that I was able to list this as a 3 star puzzle lol.

Finally found out why I never was able to solve this... I understood from reading the rules that all lines needed to have the same sum N (not that each one have a different sum N applicable to them separately) within each colour they pass through and that made it impossible to solve because of Box 1. It's not super clear to me but maybe it's because English is not my primary language that I got it wrong.

An absolutely fantastic puzzle and a great solve by simon. In the instructions "All lines must cross colours at least once" the colours being a plural was key. It would have been clearer to me if it was something like each line has to pass through both colours at least once or some such.

I loved how Simon finished the shading. He colors the 123 green and asks what is the problem with that. Well, obviously the 2x2 green in box 3 is the problem. But no. It is the poor grey boxes that get stranded. I was actually able to solve this one.

I have been playing sudoku with my dad since I was little, and following you guys for over a year, but am only just now starting to attempt sudokus with more rules than your normal ones. It makes me feel like an absolute genius when I notice something in one of these puzzles that can be resolved before one of you sees it, but I also know there are COUNTLESS things you see and resolve before I could even hope to get to it. But, I’ll keep learning and practicing! Thank you guys for the content and keeping me on my toes as I try to get better!

Perimeter investigation for color swap in box-1 is easier on the horseshoe, because if it is one color on the corner, avoiding 2x2 creates 1-cell segments on the line.

Yes, the region sum lines being based on the yin-yang coloring was quite novel and very interesting. At 1:00:18 it's not just that you get an island of grey cells, you also get a green 2x2 (with the 8, 5, 1 and 2). But that would just be too obvious to spot.

my brain kept trying to make the sum lines reference the 3x3 boxes instead of the yin-yang colors, which made the solving much longer than it needed to be. but well done Xendari, wonderful puzzle. Simon, you are a very good youtube friend, and I suspect an even better one IRL, thanks for the consistently entertaining videos.
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations Жыл бұрын
You could have used the secret on box 1 at the start for a tiny bit of information. Both lines must contain exactly two segments, so they sum to an even number. Therefore R3C3 is odd. In box 3, the straight line must have different coloured ends, so we know approximately where one boundary split occurs. R1C1 and R2C1 must be different colours, so there's the other split. It was weird that you could see that the boomerang had to have different coloured ends, but not that the same applied to the other line in box 1 (and also to the one in box 5). I had originally commented that you'd missed the 39/49 logic in box 9, but you spotted it later. This puzzle was full of nice little bits of logic like that. Thank you Mark for suggesting it. A good solve from you today; I only shouted a couple of times, but you quickly resolved them. I'm surprised it's over an hour, but I suppose you did do a lot of nori nori while explaining. I think you owe that kropki dot an apology. You maligned it early on as merely a disambiguator. It was mighty.

Great puzzle 👍🏻 - completed in 37 minutes. I'm definitely getting better at yin-yang ☯ after all the practice on here! The Ↄ-shaped line in box 1 has exactly the same restriction (and indeed any 4-cell line where all cells see each other), that it can only be divided into 2 pieces and not 3. Not sure whether Simon missed that it was not a full circle when he was first looking at it because he seems to be suggesting that you could split into 3 pieces.

Managed this in 37:55! I absolutely loved this -- the logic all flowed so beautifully, and once I found the break-in, I never got stuck trying to figure out what to do next. It was honestly a bit like a fog of war puzzle for me, which have become my favourite kind of puzzles in recent months, because I felt like I always I was being clearly shown where I needed to be looking next to figure out the next step. Really beautiful. Very much enjoyed watching how Simon came to the same conclusions from rather different angles. And I'm honestly so proud that I was able to immediately spot what was going on with the line in boxes 6&9, and without having to use placeholders! That kind of looking several moves ahead isn't something that I usually feel able to do, but in this instance it felt obvious, and it's honestly entirely thanks to this channel and the wonderful community that I've learned enough and picked up enough tricks to be able to do puzzles like this on my own. Thank you so much!

I am very pleased with myself. I managed to solve this one in 58:00...which is very rare that I finish under an hour when Simon's video is OVER an hour....but I am a little bit upset...around 28:00 when Simon was figuring out what was going on in column 3, I got stuck and broke the puzzle because for some reason I assumed digits couldn't repeat on lines, and figured that row 8 column 2 3 and 4 were all the same color...but obviously they weren't...I went to Simon's video for help to see where I went wrong, and when I realized where my mistake was that row 8 column 4 can, and is, the same digit as row 9 column 7.....but other than that little mishap, beautiful flowing puzzle, as always

14:36 Simon instantly forgets part of the rules! If r1c1 r1c2 r2c1 are all the same colour, then as he says r2c2 is the other one, but r2c1 and r2c2 would need to be the same number because of the colour changes since the sums are for each time the line enters a colour.
@HunterJE

18:50 Simon dismisses the big line at the bottom here a little prematurely -- with the perimeter and corner coloring you can shade at least one more cell. The grey cell in r9c3 is bounded by green and so is a single digit total, which means the green section that follows must extend at least one more cell to avoid having two of the same single digit sum in box 7...

I *think* that at 51:17, when you start considering where the 8 would go in box 6, either way you end up with 3 in R6C3. Though I am not sure if that helps for the remainder of the solution. I don't see how? Even 30 minutes into the video, I don't see why the line couldn't be coloured (starting top right) green-grey-grey-grey, or grey-green-green-green?
@koocnaed
@koocnaed Жыл бұрын
@Richard Smith it needed to be the same colour (grey-grey or green-green) otherwise it would have the same value in box 3. It couldn't be green-green because of the rule that no 2x2 box can be the same colour... therefore, as soon as he established the perimeter was green, those 2 cells in box 3 were known
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Жыл бұрын
@@koocnaed Why would different colours in box 3 make them the same value? The line could stay the same colour as r2c7 for r3c6 and r4c7, making those three cells need to sum to the same cell value as r2c8.

Anybody else yelling about the grey cells in row 2, columns 7 and 8 for about 30 minutes? Because I was. Lovely solve Simon! It was a delight to watch you do this. Despite my yelling, I know I would never have had a hope to even break into the puzzle. Thank you for being a wholesome channel.

Can someone clarify a rule for me? If a line passes diagonally between 2 boxes of the same colour, are they part of the same sum? Thanks

28:34 for me Edit: Fun fact, we had the exact same shading just inverted. Also funner fact, Qi in Chinese and East Asian culture is a vital force of any living entity, and it is viewed as one's life energy. The yin yang symbol is used to symbolize the balance in the human body as well as nature. Yin and Yang and Qi are two of the most popular Ancient Chinese beliefs, which is why the puzzle is called Qi Manifest (I'm guessing)

I spent a very long time assuming the rules said that all blue lines had the very same N, before eventually resigning because it created a contradiction top-left box. Sigh.

I feel like after enough region sums, he would know that 4 length lines in a single region must have exactly 1 color change along the length. Otherwise you end up with multiple 1 cell segments that see each other

at 14:34 you say that three digits would add up to another but there is no connection between 2 of them and the third which would have given 2 digits equal to each other on the same box which breaks the puzzle and would have given you what you were looking for a fact you use 5 minutes later at 19:50

I feel like he's overcautious from before Sven silently added the white lines around clue elements, it used to be hard to read some clues against darker colors like that but that's no longer an issue...

I don’t have a comment to the puzzle at hand, but a question. We all know that the boxes 1-9 each contain nine digits, totaling to 45, could anyone think of another box of nine cells in the existing grid whose total would be also 45. An example, could R3C3,R3C4…..R5C4,R5C5 sum up to 45 as well? I hope someone can answer my question.
@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby Жыл бұрын
Yes. In a trivial case, take a marked 3×3 box. Now draw a 3×3 cage shifted one cell to the right. Take the digits that were in the left-hand column on your original box, and put them in the right-hand column of your new cage, in a different order. That is perfectly compatible with the rules of sudoku. I wouldn't like to say whether _every_ valid sudoku grid has an additional non-box 3×3 region adding up to 45 though! I suspect not, but if you allow digits to repeat then it definitely increases the chances.

I think that the instructions here are a little misleading. By saying the blue lines sum to N in each colour, I would interpret that as meaning that the sum is the same for each line.

The rules explicitly say "If a blue line passes through a colour multiple times, each individual pass sums to N"
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Жыл бұрын
@@stevieinselby I don't think that's the issue. They're saying that the rules don't clarify that N can be different for different lines, and it doesn't have to be the same total across the whole grid. Equal sum line rules will often say the total doesn't have to be the same for different lines, but that's missing here. It appears to assume some familiarity with standard equal sum line rules.

@@mjm3091 Where? I don't see a line in the rules that says N can be different values for different lines. I can see how it could be interpreted as a single value N applying across the whole puzzle.
