@@ZenfulHaze True that. The problem with the rest of the Tolkien material is that it very unlikely to do what people expect it to do. The Hobbit got mauled by production realities BUT, like the Odyssey it is also a very episodic story which does not lend itself to adaptation. Fine for a book, less so for a movie. It also has a narrative style in many places, like the troll adventure, which is more like a fairy tale and doesn’t translate well into the relative moment to moment realism of cinema. It’s even worse with the Silmarillion. It’s full of chronicles which do not track anything in moment to moment narrative. They’re also episodic but further also condensed and sweeping in scope concerned large movements and with characters coming and going with the eons. To tell any single of these stories in the way that LOTR is a fleshed out story obviously requires the injection of vast amounts of non-tolkien material especially in terms of characters, their development and relationships. The Silmarillion will never be another Lord of The Rings. It isn’t in the book format either. It’s like trying to fit a story about the succession of 10 kings over a couple of hundred years into the format of a single movie. It’s not a story, its a history, better fit for a discovery series or some such. LOTR on the other hand is a fleshed out complete story tracking it’s events and characters in proper detail where you feel the presence of the author in all those minute choices.

Well, problem is that the devil is inundated, even celebrated and worshipped heavily, in the media and movie industry today, hence why there is so much garbage being produced. Anything the devil has an influence on will end up being either destructive or very unappealing, lacking the good, the true and the beautiful. Tolkien was a devout Catholic, which greatly influenced his writings, hence why the books are amazing and the entire Lord of the Rings universe is so incredible. Cheers. =)

In an original script for the movie, Sauron would appear in physical form by the gates. They replaced him with "Mouth of Sauron" in the extended version and cut it completely from the normal version.

Actually I'm pretty sure they replaced Angel Sauron with the cave troll that Aragorn fights. Stabbing the troll in the fight was supposed to be a reference/throwback to Fingolfin stabbing Morgoth in the foot during their duel in the Silmarillion.
