Joan Baez- thank you for your contributions over the years. I'm so sorry to hear about John and Fiona- my heart is filled with sadness. My prayers are with them. I had one of his demo albums back in like 1970 or 71. My uncle Peter Heine was director of advertising for Billboard Magazine- I knew John was special the first time I heard him. I was so glad that his career lasted long enough for people to appreciate him. He is very gifted. Pure and honest, I found him so refreshing. Because he wasn't a phony. Very real and dear.

The first music ever left my body was in 1975 at a family corn roast camp fire in Canada. Sang acapella with my sister Sue who had just discovered Johns music. We sang Dear Abby. Shortly after that I lost Sue and I have sang and played countless John Prine songs. He was my very first concert ever attended at Quelph University,Ontario in 1976. My moms favourite song of his I sang was Blue Umbrella. Funny how you can truly love a person you have never met but thats the power of music and I thank you for your contribution to it John. I love you and wish you the strength your music has provided me and countless others.

John got the idea to write this song while setting inside a mailbox as a letter carrier while eating his lunch to stay out of the blowing snow. His feet were the only thing you could see sticking out of the front of the mailbox. An elderly woman walked by, leaned over and said "hello in there". True story. I'm a retired Postal employee and this was well known in our ranks. Be well John.

I remember a story in"Rolling Stone" where he talked about people calling him the "new Dylan;" I love Dylan's music, he belongs on America's musical Mount Rushmore, but cynicism was his trademark. Prine may be the least cynical person in show business. His humor is unfailingly gentle; empathy is his secret.

Every once in awhile John Prine would come in to buy guitar strings. We must have been nearby for him. My co-worker and I would get so excited, we’d say, “John, why don’t you try out some of these guitars hanging on the wall??” And he was so nice...he’d smile and then he’d take a guitar off the wall and sit on a little stool and give that guitar a workout! Damn. What a dude.

O, Joan, I can remember listening to this song on my Diamonds and Rust album and it really hit me hard. I had seen prejudice against the elderly all too much at my young age of sixteen. I started talking with my friend about how this song had touched me when she found me in tears sitting on the back porch, album in hand your sweet voice echoing through the old wood home she was renting. I said that I promise that I will always give anyone needing attention my love. Something I was able to do as a Hairstylist, I gave each and every client special care and when cancer cut my career short I have plenty of time to keep my promise, I lost everything financially and now live with lots of old people ln a nursing home! ;) I had a special friend that I thought of (still do ) every time I hear Diamonds and Rust, so thank you for that beautiful song.

Good morning from New Zealand. This dedicated song came up on KZbin this morning. As well as enjoying hearing the song, I was particularly moved by your comment. I want to relay to you my deepest appreciation for the love you have shared with so many others throughout your life. You remind me of myself regarding your empathy and the deep prompting you felt which lead you on in the direction of your natural ability to love broadly and deeply. It has been a pleasure to read from a wonderfully loving, caring, purposeful and inspiring person. I would love to know more about you or share further inspiration.. I wonder how that csn be done? If there are no opportunities, just please accept my thanks and admiration. We are all currently in lockdown in New Zealand. I am a retired nurse. The lockdown has given me a greater appreciation of a broader selection of neighbours. Everyone has been so quiet. The only things I strongly remember hearing in the neighbourhood are 2 pieces of music. When the first began, I thought 'oh no, someone has their stereo blaring which will destroy my peace and serenity'. But I then noticed the words "Call me, call me, call me call me anytime, call me". It was a lovely surprise. The one song ended and the silence returned. The second sound that I will not forget came from a large house where several young professionals live. Suddenly someonè there played an orchestral instrument (not sure what). There has never been a recital from the house before or since Easter Sunday. I was prompted to then sit down and play something I could remember on the piano. I hoped to add to the atmosphere and human communication via music during lockdown on that day. I am very well aware that while we will be free to leave our neighbourhoods some time soon, many people are in permanent lockdown, and that lockdown ends when their lives end. I am pleased to know that many people have requested this compassionate song and that Joan selected it to share with the world. I will certainly listen to more songs of John Price's. Thankyou again. From Wanda.

John Prine is the singer I've seen in concert more times than any other; going back to the early 80's at least a dozen. I actually won a contest a few years ago that the Ryman had for two Prine tickets. People had to turn in a video of themselves singing one of his songs and John himself was the judge. I sang "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round" with a "happy" enchilada for a prop. I was happily surprised when John picked me as the winner! John's songs are like diamonds; each one is beautiful and unique and you get lost in that beauty. John, FIGHT this terrible disease with all you've got and please know you have thousands of fans praying for your complete and speedy recovery. Fiona, we love you and are praying for you as well!

I first heard of him when I heard Bonnie Raitt sing Angel from Montgomery. I had to know who wrote the song. I’ve read a lot about him. He’s a sincere, kind, and generous man. And humble. There’s a little chance that he will beat this. He leaves behind a gift that will never stop giving.

I just read that Fiona tweeted that she is on the recovery side, and John is stabilized, and improving. Keep those thoughts and prayers going. Whe you hear Bill Murray, say it was a John Prine song that brought him out of depression, and consider we've all listened to john on a bad day _at the very least,_ and add everyone up, the world needs John Prine. He's irreplaceable.

@@leewhalen3620 I grew up in the country, but we were into hard rock and heavy metal. We used to have keg parties when I was too young, but... We would have hard rock blasting in the late 70's, and metal/hair bands blasting in the 80's. During parties, as the night wore on and people were either passing out, or starting to fight, someone would put on John Prine. All of us rowdy, Rock-N-Rollin', drunk metal heads would begin sitting down around the bonfire, mumbling words along with John (we thought we sounded great - lol). Even the rowdiest of them would forget why they were angry. It was as if John grabbed us all by the ear and settled us down. That's a *_very_* fond memory for me. But prior to KZbin, I honestly thought John Prine was our secret, or at least a secret that very few people knew about. I was amazed to find out that everyone knew about him. I mentioned that a few years ago under a Prine video, and I was even more amazed to hear that so many other metal heads had similar experiences of having John Prine in their lives... I talk too much, but John has been heavily on my mind from the moment that I heard he was ill with this virus. Especially after beating cancer twice. And you're right. We need to keep Fiona in our hearts and minds as well.

I first heard this song on s Saturday night in 1979 and was moved by the thought of it. The following morning I was walking over to the convenient mart to get a Sunday paper and chanced to pass by an elderly man on his way back. Remembering the song I looked right at him and said hello. He lifted his head and I could see the gratitude in his eyes for being noticed. We had a moment there and I've never forgotten that experience, and every time I hear this song I remember it.

I went to the "open mike" night once in Big Sur at the Henry Miller house about 2009, magical evening, stars out, a little roach passed around w chocolate chip cookies, and the third or fourth performer--all amateur locals out for a free mini concert--played "Spanish Pipedream." He couldn't have been 24 years old, but he had discovered John Prine from 40 years earlier. Did my heart good, and a big, sh*t eating grin came upon my face...Angel from Montgomery will also live forever. Thanks, Joan!

I met Joan Baez once at the (then called) The Garden State Arts Center in NJ, Exit 116 off the Parkway. I was dumb. After playing in front of 10,000 people, Joan Baez got off stage and then she saw me, a kid with a CD in hand, I asked her to listen to my music. It's embarrassing. But as awkward as I was, she was kind , present, looked me in the eye, and gave me her undivided attention. Her kindness has moved me as much as anything that anyone had ever done... let alone charming 10,000 people with her golden voice. Joan Baez is one of our great treasures... and is every bit as much a beautiful soul.

Yah you are right. but I am tibetan Buddhist and we believe world in not creation of God rather by law of causality (cause and effect). Not only the world but every thing (like our psychology- mental health, physical- behaviour, actions), the disease too are created by chains of ( cause and effect). But here is the catch Nothing is permanent (our joy or suffers). And every end of something is beginning of something new. And we all are trapped in this loops or the circle. Yet I believe regardless of our religious difference, if we continue to improve our compassion to others, forgiveness, and unconstitutional love-help towards others with true heart will brings happiness. I think all religions believe equally and give important to these element. But sad think is that now in world SPL many youth are seems very naive and ignorant. They lots in fantasy world , complete derailed from the reality. There are some KZbinrs what they doing is offering many or food to homeless person and asking audiences to hit like button. some KZbinrs are offering new iPhone or cash as random act of kindness only for hit more like button and to subscribe the channel I found distasteful. Many people. Other did serious crime for short term happiness (money in most cases). So many are out their.
