Isn't it great when e1 can actually play??? I swear I'd have liked "The Babe" so much more if John Goodman's popouts to shallow center weren't magically going 600 feet. This, Major League, and Bull Durham all so much better because of the realism.

The ball bouncing off that guy's head and being a homerun actually happened IRL to Jose Canseco. One of the all-time great bloopers in sports history.
@zimvader25
@zimvader25 Жыл бұрын
And somewhat controversial since the rule at the time specifically stated that a HR is a fly ball over the fence in fair territory that doesn't touch the ground OR "isn't touched by an opposing player". Unless you're claiming the head isn't part of the body, that should've just been a ground rule double. The rule has since been updated to match the Canseco ruling though. Now it specifically states a head bounce is a HR.

The shot of the heavyset "die hard NY Fan" (not the guy in the suit - we dont really see him in this edit) giving the nod to him and saying Good Job Chapel- man as a Boston fan it hits me in the feels. its like when I was watching the Cubs win a World Series - its 6 seconds of film but it adds so much to what it is to be a true baseball fan . . . to love . . for the love of the game :)

A lifelong Yankees fan, I travel to Boston a lot on business. Whenever I go, I pack my long-sleeved Yankees t-shirt and I wear it when I'm out and about. Naturally, it starts some good-natured teasing but it has also sparked some really sincere conversations about baseball and you won't find better fans than Red Sox fans. The scene with the Yankee fan in this movie is spot-on.

As someone who grew up in the Chicagoland area, went to a number of daytime games while growing up (THE BEST TIME FOR BASEBALL GAMES THANK YOU), and knowing a number of Cubs fans whose strength of fandom can only be described as a religious fervor...that Game 7 in particular was absolutely surreal. It's burned into my brain for non-baseball reasons that were life-changing and happened to occur on the same day. But even discounting that...if the Cubs were ever going to win the World Series, it would be in a Game 7, extra innings, after a rain delay. Almost daring the Lord Almighty to look down and say, "Wait, the Cubs? This isn't right." I bring this up to say that this film was clearly going for that kind of emotional resonance, and even if you can't QUITE get there just on film, it was a damned fine effort.

Years ago, I saw a behind the scenes on the making of this movie and what I remember was how much of a soldier Kevin Costner was. A professional pitcher will have a few days off between games they pitch, but Costner was filming this night after night. He would soak in an ice bath and then come out to see the dailies. And then come back the next night to do it all over again. It would have been brutal for a younger person but he seemed to stay cheerful and keep morale up.

What really made this movie touch a nerve for me was I was deployed at the time. Honestly not many of us appreciated a love story while deployed... but then a few weeks later Randy Johnson actually did, for the first time in decades, what was portrayed in the movie. It didn't dawn on a lot of the guys, but it sure hit me good.

On your questions/comments about baseball, foul balls count as strikes until there are two strikes. A foul ball doesn't count as a third strike, unless it is on a bunt. Once there are two strikes, a player can foul off 20 pitches or more in a row, and they just keep going. And for your comment on the Yankees fan. Back when this movie was made, that's how all of us felt about Yankees fans. They had so much more money than just about any other team that they could just buy the best players all the time. So they were always in the playoffs, and their fans came off as the most self-entitled jerks you could ever meet. So everyone who wasn't a Yankees fan, hated Yankees fans. On the other hand, you did get to see at the end of the movie the crowd applauding the perfect game. That is one thing you almost universally see when a perfect game is thrown. No matter which stadium it's in, and which team they pitch for, fan will usually give a standing ovation to the pitcher who throws one. They're just so rare, people are happy to be able to say they were there. In the over 140 years of Major League Baseball, only 23 perfect games have been thrown.

As a 51 year old with 20 seasons pitching baseball, many years behind me, this is the bar that all baseball movies are measured against. It is perfect, but possibly only appreciated by those that have lived life and have had to let go of something that is so character defining. When you stand on the mound, everything else fades away, and it becomes almost spiritual. The way to game is shown here is the closest to the real thing i've seen. @42:22 When he sits alone on the hotel bed after the game and cries, that is beyond perfect and absolutely the truest moment of the film. Its a moment that all men have when the task is complete and they have to let go, but its never seen or accepted in society. I love that it is portrayed so well. Kevin has made a lot of baseball movies, but this it the top shelf movie of the group

Such an amazing film, with such great details. Those clips at the beginning of little Billy Chapel? That was Kevin Costner’s own home movies of him and his dad when he was a boy. During filming, when he was already over 40 years old at the time, Costner threw 200 to 300 pitches a day for 18 days. (Pro players rarely throw more than 100 pitches, with 4-5 days rest in-between.) The pain was causing him to vomit, such that the actual trainer for the Yankees was brought in to keep Costner going without injuring himself. Apparently there was a lot of medication involved.

This is one of those rare movies that is actually underrated. People throw that term around “underrated” all the time. I don’t remember a movie being so much better than the reception this film got. I believe after “Dances with Wolves” and “Field of Dreams” Costner went on a run of bombs critically and at the Box Office. So the critics just dismissed this film and picked it apart. Had this come out before “Waterworld”, “The Postman” etc… then I believe it would have been fairly analyzed. I love this movie.

The highlight of this movie was watching and listening to the legendary Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully calling Kevin Costner's perfect game. May he rest in peace. This was a vintage Vinny performance on tv or over the radio wave that so many Dodgers fans loved - easy to listen and poetic. It was very fitting that Kevin Costner paid tribute and honored Vin Scully with his emotion speech at Dodgers Stadium on 9/24/2016. Vin Scully retired in 2016. Cassie, you should watch that video. There are countless big moments where Vin Scully called the game. In general, the fan favorite is his announcement at the Game 1 of 1988 World Series when the injured LA Dodgers Kirk Gibson hits the "improbable" walk-off home run against Oakland Athletics. My personal favorite moment was him announcing Hideo Nomo's no hitter game in Denver, Colorado. I believe to this day it is still the only no hitter game ever recorded at Colorada Rockies stadium. A no hitter was said to be impossible to achieve at Coors Field.

So I absolutely LOVE this entire movie, but I especially love a lot of what happens from 34:10 onwards. I love the speech that Gus gives to Billy. I love Billy seeing his dad when the count is 3 and 0 so he can throw the pivotal strike that makes Birch swing at the 3 and 1 pitch. I love Micky Hart redeeming himself and repaying Billy for having his back after his mistake, working the wall with him, etc, and the announcers call in general. "Back goes Micky Hart, to the track, at the wall, and leaps up and one hands it!" I love the fact that the most important at bat of the game, and the one that sets everything down it's final course, is between Billy and his friend Davis Birch. If Davis Birch hits a home run on his 3rd at bat. Jane goes to London. Billy chases after her when he gets taken out, and who knows what happens afterwards. Because Mickey Hart robs Davis Birch of said home run though, because of the advice and assistance he got from Billy Chapel, Birch's friend and former teammate, Jane doesn't go to London, Billy gets his perfect game, and Billy gets his happily ever after.

My wife and I had the unfortunate distinction of watching live as Randy Johnson pitched a perfecto at Turner Field against our Braves. You hate it but, at the same time, you realize you're watching history. Totally identify with those Yankee fans both during and after!!

@Cassie & Carly Since I first subscribed a year ago, you two have become like family. I’ve been going through my own Billy Chapel crossroads these days, and when I’m feeling blue, I come hang out with you in a reaction or two. This was The Perfect Reaction to a perfect game - I cried and felt less alone in my troubles for a night. You two are a national treasure - it’s unusual (or even rare) to find such tender spirits and wholesome humanity. Don’t ever change. Not even if it would give you MM’s of subscribers. You’re perfect just the way you are - witty, funny, and always rooting hard for love and kindness in a broken world. Thank you. Other Costner sports movies worth checking out are Tin Cup (golf) and American Flyers (cycling). Flyers features a very young, pre-stardom Kevin Costner (sporting quite the mustache) while Tin Cup also stars Rene Russo (Thor’s Mom in MCU, and in Lethal Weapon 3). Which reminds me, are you reacting to LW3 soon?

This is the greatest baseball movie. I'll give you that Bull Durham and Major League have their places, but this is so well constructed. A 5 year romance being recalled during the progress of a fantastic, well presented last game of the season. The best part of this [I played sports for 13 years] is the "clear the mechanism" ... so well presented. His talking out loud and thoughts throughout the game as it progresses with all of the banter puts this in the stratosphere.

Barely a minute after J.K. Simmons (Billy's manager) came on screen, and you correctly identified him as the Farmers Insurance guy, my video was interrupted....by a Farmers Insurance commercial! 😆 I don't remember if you ladies have seen the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, but Simmons played a perfect J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker's boss at the Daily Bugle newspaper. So glad you watched this great movie!! It's an underrated gem that doesn't get talked about enough. And anytime we get to hear Vin Scully's voice, easily one of the best broadcasters of all time, it's a good day. 😊 Great job ladies!!

Funny that you should mention Spider-Man, since this is by the same director, Sam Raimi. I think J.K. and him worked together in The Gift as well, if I'm not mistaken.

The most successful pitcher in the history of professional baseball was a woman named Jean Faut. She played for the Racine Bluebells, which was a team in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (the same league portrayed in the film "A league of their own"). She not only pitched two perfect games (a feat never matched by any other professional pitcher) she pitched three no hitters (the difference is that in a perfect game nobody makes it on base at all, and in a no hitter, someone get on base due to a walk or a struck batter, but does not score). Meaning that not only did she pitch two perfect games, she came close to pitching five. She also pitched an exhibition match wherein she struck out some of the greatest hitters of the 1940s and 1950s. No pitcher has *EVER* done that well.

It was so fun and exciting to see you Cassie and Carly get worked up for this amazing sports Rom Com. ------- This for sure is the male version of love. We never say the right things, we never have the best timing, and we make more mistakes than one can count. ------ To hope by some stroke of luck saves our butt and the woman still gives us a chance to be a part of her life. ------ To find on the worst day of our lives that special lady is there in our corner to lift us when no one else will. ------- This is why, "For Love of the Game" Resonates so deeply. Thanks, gals for the amazing reactions. You all are the best.

Thank you, Cassie and Carly. My expectations for this reaction... to this most poignant of all the sports stories through the lens of the one perfect game... to the most human of all the love stories pinged with both undeniable truth and doubt, magnified even more by the addition of the daughter... the writing... the acting... everything... well, it couldn't have been any higher. Yet, you two exceeded that expectation and somehow made Love and the Game... even better. For me, this FLOTG react sits up with the very best of PiB.

@Cassie & Carly- Thanks for reviewing this movie!!! This reaction exceeded my expectations. It was magic when Cassie fell in love with another favorite movie of mine, "The Replacements". Ever since you reviewed "Field of Dreams", I have been waiting for the 2 of you to review this movie for a year! I love how "For the Love of the Game" movie and how it intertwines Billy & Jayne's story together & the backdrop of the baseball game. Costner truly is the king of baseball movies! There is a lesser known Keanau Reeve's movie I KNOW YOU'D LOVE... It's called "Hardball". I hope you'll get to it sometime. All the best, M-

This one is a guilty pleasure if mine. Guys aren't supposed to have emotions, but I always ride the waves in this movie when no one's looking. This movie always makes me feel better when I'm down. Thank you sooo much ladies. I have been suggesting this one for some time. The poetry of how hard and rare an actual Perfect Game is, there’s only been 23 in all of MLB history, and it’s not near as great as getting the girl. Definitely hits the spot especially in a movie that shows real baseball. Costner’s college game def showed in this movie. Please consider “Invincible” with Mark Wahlberg next. It’s a true story & amazing football movie. I promise you won’t be disappointed
