Very appreciative of the answer Dave. Much of what I have read talks about each component without clear reference to other components discussed by someone else, hence my question. With this answer (thank you) I am starting to build my "reference" station, largely modeled on your own. My real goal is to eventually be able to help others, especially those new like me (at the age of 78). You always come through. Dan, KJ7YBK and 73 young man...

To be clear, a lightning arrestor will NOT protect against a direct strike it is only helpful for near miss strikes. If you suffer a direct strike your equipment WILL be destroyed with or without an arrestor if it is connected to any structure the lightning contacts. If you live in an area with frequent lightning activity disconnect all equipment from the feedline (a switch is not adequate) and from the mains supply when left unattended.

MR.kessler . Fairly new ham , I found out the hard way that you didn't mention a keying relay between a modern radio and and old tube amp . Why I mentioned that is my old Amp Supply LK800NT took out my radio and secondly you also didn't put in your drawings where to put the Watt/Swr meter in line with a tuner without any meters and with a amplifier and what effect coax length has on the setup in between each component. Radio that was taken out was a great Yaesu FT950 from the LK800NT from no relay box and also the length of jumper in between everything. 73 K3FES Fred in the Shed

Many thanks I have a slight learning difficulty and lost my Aide d, Memoire .it creates chaos and I have been licensed since 1982 .Asking the most basic of questions ….I keep a check card for tuning…etc could not remember where to put a pwr meter in for accurate readings
@SpikeMoN2 жыл бұрын
You had mentioned swr between transceiver and amp..... Sure enough after tuning and getting ready I checked..... Over 3:1.....before I went overboard simply replaced the jumper from the icom 7300 to 811h brought it to 1:3..... Think before you panic 😉

Great video! Where would a switch be placed from xcrv-amp-switch-tuner-antenna?

I'm a little lost here, I see three Connections between the transceiver and the amp. One is the AGC, I get that. But what are the two cables to and from the transceiver and amp? How do I get the amp connected to my tuner? I've only got two connections on the back of my amp, and one on the back of my transceiver. I'm a little confused?

Hello David..so if i have an SWR meter between amp and auto tuner do i treat the tuner as a manual tuner?..so can manually tune for best SWR on meter? And forget about what the tuner says?

Do the US courses for the ham radio licences not cover this? The current lowest level 'foundation licence' in the UK covers this and can have questions on it in the exam.
@samgrieg3 жыл бұрын
None of the questions for a US license of any class covered it a few years ago, if I remember correctly.

A line isolater is I believe another name for a current balun. In my following comment I want to be clear I'm not making any comment here on the questioner who posed this question, but comparing national approached to licensing exams. It seems strange to me that someone can be licensed and not know how to set up a rig. Here in the land of VK there is a practical component to the Foundation License, which includes demonstrate that you can correctly assemble a station and make a CQ call. For all the flaws in our system (and there are many) I think the approach to exams - and judging by this and other your tube video's subjects - and the required learning objectives of the syllabus is a better approach and probably produces hams with a better knowledge to actually operate their radios, safely, minimising interference and in compliance with the regulations - which are what I feel the important parts of an entry level license should be.

Hi Dave, I have several of your videos to watch over and over again when I need to coma back to it. Not this one. Is there a reason for it not to be downloadable? Ofcourse I can capture it but I am puzzled why the download option has been disabled. Keep up the good work Dave. Regards, Jus, VK2FEX
