This is such an important conversation. “Art is about the creator, not the about the creation. The whole point of creativity is so that you can feel something.” It’s something I’ve just started discovering for myself recently and it m so happy to hear the wisdom that’s being discussed here. Thanks so much for doing this!

All of the artists we studied in school moved from thing to thing: Van Gogh had still life’s and portraits and sunflowers and landscapes and haystacks and self portraits. We all move from interest to interest, changing techniques and even mediums as we go.

Ladies this was great! Kolbie, indeed “what’s stopping you?” is one of the most important questions. I recently started painting, but I ‘m very creative in other areas, like writing. So I was never afraid to create while writing, so it doesn’t make sense to be afraid to create with paint, but I went through all the phases of “self-stopping”. Thank you for being an inspiration!

This is so spot on. Thank you so much. It wasn't until other people told me I was an artist, that I started to embrace it. That is sad. I use to say, "I'm not an artist, I just like to draw, paint, etc." And they would say, "Are you serious, I love your stuff." We really don't need other people to validate us. Once you learn that, you can flourish to whatever level you decide to take it to.

I am soooo late to this watercolour party, or even exploring being arty in general. But am I glad I finally made it! I am obsessed with how you approach teaching watercolour art, the mindset about creativity and the acknowledgement of artistic wounds and how often we ourselves are our biggest hindrance. I'm bloody 41 and I'm only just realising that I can do so much more than I ever thought I could or should. I am investing in the good supplies and I am struggling with letting myself use the good supplies. I often find myself thinking "I'll use up the lower quality stuff first AND THEN I am allowed to use the good stuff". No! I paid for the good stuff, I use it when ever the fluff I feel like using it! I need to make a big sign of all the things I need to remind myself and hang it on the wall above my desk. You are taking up space in my heart where supportive parents should've been. And I am so grateful for it. I'm grateful for the conversations you are having on your channel, I am grateful for the things you teach and how you teach them. My Billy is being taken over by art supplies and Kristy Rice books and I'm not mad.

Thankyou ladies for your wisdom and encouragement. I am an artist ( not professional) and a quilter. I teach quilting and there is a term I use for different approaches, “ are you a process quilter or a project quilter”. There are quilters who do ‘quilt in a day’ not my style as I’m all about the process, I love the designing the playing with colour the stitching etc but to get to the art. In this conversation you hit on something so important, it’s about the joy of the process. I have been criticised by art teaches for painting too realistic and with too much detail. Now while I love to see paint flow and mingle and do all sorts of wonderful things my JOY comes from getting in there with detail. Thank you ladies for voicing your approval of doing art whatever way brings you joy. Only now in my 70’s do I feel confident enough to say I’m doing it ‘my way’ ❤

Thank you both for having the discussion UP Front on the scarcity- stressors. I grew up in significant poverty, so I have a lifelong pass to that mindset. Having the resources to be choosy *now* makes me think carefully about paper. Kristi, I have a bargain-sketchbook that I adore ($6 from Michael’s, 9x12 or so). Mainly I love it because it was the first bigger sketchbook I Ever filled. When I say the paper is unsuitable, it doesn’t even take a number two pencil very well 😆 great at ball point pen tho! One thing it taught me-I can paint out a concept on The Worlds LEAST SUITABLE PAPER. And as quirky and as bad as the paint behaves, I realized I can learn papers the way I learn paints. And once you learn papers…. By adjusting your goals or work style, to the limitations of your available paper, you can paint with watercolor on any paper. When you don’t know your papers limitations of course it will fight you. But by chucking paint at page after page, you can learn what that sketchbook will do in your hands, to help you. I know get so interested in using up my remaining unsuitable paper sketchbooks because I do see them help me release creativity. Paper is *the* limiting factor: there are skills you cannot learn on bad paper. So when your budget expands, I always recommend leveling up on paper quality so you can continue growing. But really cheap hardbound sketchbooks can still be a thing of joy.

Loved. It. So. Much. I was sitting there nodding through the whole thing like one of those wobbly headed dolls. Basically, just WORD. One thing worth singling out, though. As a parent of an adult, I can confirm that you never feel qualified. Never. Those who would tell you otherwise, are either lying or are not from this planet. As a matter of fact, the older they get, the less qualified you feel. I felt the most qualified when I had a newborn. And you can guess how qualified I felt.

OMG, WOW! This conversation was so validating, so inspiring so point on. I found out I am a very couragous painter. That demeaning , nagging loud voice in my head has nothing on me anymore, Do I still get discouraged ? Yep, but I just keep going.I struggle but enjoy the journey so much that I actually got out pen and paper and wrote how I was feeling and my experience doing my art work. What an affermation to me.! I have done some of my best work on paper bags, slate and the back of wall covering. It took me 2 years to use my Arch's paper and the first attempt was horrifying, you would have thought I had not learned anything, Kate needed to learn consistacy of water and pigment. I could ramble forever but you guys touched on so much and have left me so excited ! Pardon my spelling , Love you both this was the bomb !

I’ve really enjoyed this interview, I was an art student in the 1980s, and until around 3 years ago I refused to have anything to do with watercolour. My lecturer made it seem so difficult and was extremely critical of any mistakes. From leaving Art College in 1987, I didn’t even pick a pencil up until around 2013, when I was forced to do something. My back seized up and I was off my feet for 6 weeks so I sent my husband to but a desktop easel and art supplies. I lay flat with the easel on my stomach and went on from there. Now I’m obsessed, more than as a teenager, and recently found your channel after finding a Kirby Rosanes book and I’m working my way through this, plus the other 3 I have, and my colouring book collection is expanding with different artists. I’m now 53 yrs old, but believe it’s never too late to pick new skills up and work at them to expand your creativity. I went back to university at 37 yrs old for my photography degree, felt like an old lady, but loved every minute of it. I’m not in good health, I live with chronic pain every single day, and my frustrations really show when my hands hurt so much I can’t draw or paint because holding a brush or pencil hurts so much. I don’t sleep more than 2 to 3 hrs a night, but if I find I can have a good day of whatever art I choose for the day, then I do sometimes sleep deeper and feel more rested too. I’m obviously so relaxed it helps. I think the text you highlight makes a big impact to show people everything is possible, you just need to kickstart yourself and your mind, then your heart will follow. I love your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. I’m in the cold wet U.K. and I don’t go out much through wintertime, so I’ve plenty to keep me busy, watching and learning new skills. I’ve got to admit that I was a bit of a snob over 😊coloured pencils, not believing you could create anything except pale, washed out colourings, how wrong I was. I’m LOVING what they can do.

Dear Kristy. One of the things, apart from your immense talent, is that it's also enjoyable for us (yes the viewer) when you compliment yourself!!!! When you lay paint down and you're excited about it, I just run to my paint!!! Thank you!!!!!!! I've learned so much from you!

There is no "should" and only I would like to... That is something I learned some time ago from my therapist. Taking that expectation away from all that I do will get me the joy and peace I require in life. I try very hard to remind myself of this daily. Bless you both for your words of encouragement. So good!!

Wow, so many "take aways" from this vid. One of my biggest struggles for sure. I would love for someone to recognize my work... like someone does a Georgia O'Keefe. But I need that "style" first lol. I'm still a newbie going through boot camp:)

You two are truly inspiring, and fun and you will be so free of so much anxiety when you get old and you’re still painting…I’ll be 77 next week and I promise it happens…I even got over what I said about using expensive paper many years ago!

Mental health, whew! I’m bipolar. Art keeps me sane. Yet, perfectionism prevents me from putting brush to paper when I’m depressed. This video is GOLD!
