Orks are generally given a cockney accent in media because they are generally based on British football (soccer) hooligans who have a reputation for going to matches primarily so they can have a fight. This was an endemic behaviour in the 1970's and 1980's (when the Warhammer 40K setting was being developed) where certain teams such as Millwall (a team based in the Greater London region, thus the accent) had a reputation for having a particularly thuggish fandom. The fact that they seemed to love starting fights more than sports made them an ideal basis from which to portray a species who's main behavioural trait is that they love to fight.
@StevesGenericIndustriesInc.2 жыл бұрын
Why are all the orks Cockney? Imagine if you will: GeeDubs office in Thatcher-era Britain, a group of nerds (excuse me, entrepreneurs) are coming up with the finishing touches on their new tabletop game Warhammer. "Ok, we got all other playable factions figured out but how do we make our orcs unique?" The group brainstorms to no avail for hours. By change a soccer game is playing on the telly, showing drunken football hooligans doing their thing. "Hey *WAIT A MINUTE!!!"*

An important thing to understand about Warhammer 40K was that it started off as a *very* tongue-in-cheek parody of (then) modern sci-fi, along with some social commentary. The Imperium of Man is every 80s grimdark sci-fi dystopia rolled up into one, the orks are basically British football hooligans with oversized (but hilariously inaccurate) guns, the Necrons are *literally* just a race of Terminators, etc. It's a setting where the theocratic fascistic imperialists with literal skulls on their hats are considered the "good" guys, because this is a fundamentally absurd setting where battle-nuns have artillery that fires missiles out of a pipe organ and space communists use laser mechs to fight hungry bug things that are probably meant to be a metaphor for consumerism or something. A big part of the problem with the setting (and its fans) is that a lot of people forgot it was supposed to be a joke, that it's over-the-top and absurd on purpose. And those people who don't get the joke are absolutely *insufferable.*
@illogicalbear62002 жыл бұрын
OI! YA WORDY GIT SOUNDS LOIK YOUZ NEEDZ A KRUMPIN! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! (I've never met someone who didn't get the joke, but I'd bet they are annoying, after all, what's the point of loving a WH faction if you can't embrace that all of them are morally shitty. Even the Tau. Ya know what, fuck it, ESPECIALLY THE TAU!) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!
@AdeptusCaeiusIII2 жыл бұрын
I don't know the PRECISE reason why the different factions are the way they are, but I think the Imperium were meant to be a 'Star Wars Empire' version of a dystopian UK far in the future. I think the Nids are meant to be kind of a play on the Xenomorphs from Alien, seeing as Blizzard rolled the Nids AND the actual Xenomorphs from Alien into one race when they made the Zerg in Star Craft. I dunno, though. A lot of things from around that time kind of blend together. First thought in my head when I saw Necrons was 'oh, so space Terminators', too.
@ChicagoReacts2 жыл бұрын
Well all of that is absolutely FANTASTIC! Battle-nuns fighting with a pipe organ? I'm sold.
@Mrinsecure2 жыл бұрын
@@AdeptusCaeiusIII The Imperium is a lot of parodying the UK (specifically the Thatcher Administration), but it also takes elements from the Soviet Union and East Germany (the use of Commissars in its army, for example). Like I said, they're a mix of basically every trope intended to indicate to the audience "yes, these are supposed to be bad guys" and yet they're portrayed heroically, because they're genuinely the least bad thing in the galaxy (except maybe the T'au). But unfortunately there's a contingent in the 40K fandom that takes this 100% seriously, and believes the Imperium are *actually* good guys and having a God-Emperor ruling over everyone would be a good thing. Because some people just do not understand subtext, I guess.

@@ChicagoReacts The Sisters of Battle are great, but a lot of things in 40K are that ridiculous. Even, or especially, the parts that are supposed to be taken seriously.

Warhammer 40k is best explored in a topic-by-topic basis. There's sort of a baseline set of lore that makes everything else easier (stuff like the Horus Heresy for example) but after that it's mostly best to find stuff that's interesting and look into that. There's so much lore I don't think the people who make it know all the lore anymore

The Uruks from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War aren't cockney. At least most of them. As for the 40k Orks, IIRC their way of speaking was inspired by British football hooligans.

I like how you picked up on the cockney accent for the Orks. It's part of the design process way back when, that the creators kinda blended fantasy tropes with other archetypes to give them a different flavour. Orks were basically Soccer hooligan lads, hence the accent and penchant for mindless violence at ALL times (it's part of their lore that if they don't have enemies to fight, they'll just turn around and fight each other for fun. Fighting is basically what they live for)

"basically time Lords" is a pretty damn good analogy tbh, think Arnold Schwarzenegger mixed with time lord, but 8ft tall and in massive power armour. They are *chonky* Also since I'm a necrons player, down with the space marines, *especially* the ultrasmurfs and their extra layers of plot armour.

All you need to know is eventually, in lore, we basically become a different type of Star Trek universe ( but instead of Warp drives we punch a hole through reality into the warp and travel through there) with massive cathedrals for space ships, spreading throghout the galaxy befriending alien species including Eldar and the orks( well more of a “Non Aggression” Treaty with them), called the Golden Age/Dark Age of Technology. Eventually around 23k ours AI turned on us starting Judgement Day called The Age of strife/Old Night, where eventually all the Aliens we befriended turned on us also at the end and starting The Genocide of humanity across the galaxy ( Justifying our xenophobia) Which eventually we were able to stop. But earth had become a wasteland with no water and Techno Barbarians, and our colonies were cut off by warp storms. Finally, by 31k Big E energed( he’d been around since 8k bc ) and started the “ Reunification wars” reuniting humanity on earth and then “ The Great Crusade “ reuniting humanity across the galaxy. But one of his sons he created, called a Primarch, named Horus got butthurt over Big E not telling anyone about chaos in an attempt to kill them off since even knowing if them feeds them, got corrupted by chaos, threw a diaper baby shit fit and started a civil war that eventually lead to chaos and the defeat of chaos, Horus, And a severely crippled Big E. Who got put on the golden thrown and fed 1,000 latent untrained psykers a day so they don’t explode into a giant demon portal. We do try and rescue psykers and train them to control their powers but not all succeed or want to be trained. And so basically Warhammer is humanity fighting off it’s literal genocide from literally EVERYTHING in the galaxy for 10k plus years. The rest you can learn yourself.

In case you were wondering, the reason the orks speak in a Cockney like accent is because Games workshop the company that created Warhammer, was founded in the UK and the orks are loosely based on rowdy British football hooligans

Warhammer is weird. The best way to describe it is that there's a god of hope, and he is evil. He lives in Space Hell. I'm not kidding. Each group is willing to kill every other group at any time with few exceptions. Blood ravens are the main faction of the strategy games. They are known for *S* trategically *T* ransporting *E* quipment from *A* lternate *L* ocations.
@sygmarvexarion78912 жыл бұрын
The reason they are cockney is because video game companies and even movie companies hire British actors for the less important side characters because they are cheaper than American actors. And once you got a British voice actor, who can obviously do Cockney accent, then why not do it for the extra...pizazz?
