Great vid very helpful points as well. Me and my buddy’s just beat our first play through on apprentice and while I knew a good bit of this it’s always good to see another point of view to get some insight.

Thank you! I love how this game lets you come up with your own favorite ways of playing. You can definitely min/max an optimal setup but I think it's more fun to try and find ways to see how you can make your own play style work!

I understand the debate between 1 check and 5 check weapons, but when you show an example of 22 vs. 35, the math is in favor of 35. With the 35, you can get 21 damage in 3 checks which is almost exactly the same. You then lose all upside of potentially getting 14 more damage out of the additional 2 checks. Now if you were comparing 22 vs. 26 damage, then that's a different debate. I hope this helps!

Fair point! I think what I was trying to say was to be careful when choosing solely based on the max damage that's shown because the probability that you'll be dealing that displayed damage on a consistent basis is considerably lower for a 5-check weapon. There's probably a sweet spot for difference in damage amount and number of rolls that you can work out mathematically to help you decide between two weapons.

I know this comment is two years old but who cares. My issue with this has been that a lot of enemies seem to nearly require you to get a perfect attack to hit them at all (i play the blacksmith so it might have to do with my low speed), and the 5 check weapons rarely get a perfect.

@@booch4405 You need to master using focus then to insure high damage hits. That now comes down to better resource management early on so you have the herbs and such for later game

Have you played FTK 2? If so, how do you think it compares to 1?

If there are n stat checks for an item where each success rate is p with total damage d, then your expected damage is p*d. Choose the skill with the highest value for p*d and note that number of rolls does not effect the expected value, a great metric to use to compare two values. In the example you give, both probabilities are equal to $p$, and damage 1, d1=22, while damage 2, d2=35, so the expected value of the second one is larger; hence, we should use the second one

@@InGameScientist One subtlety is calculating rounding values in expectations but that shouldn't effect much. And it is important to get a perfect roll for skill effects which this does not take into effect

@@kentkoleslau7390 I avoided the discussion around skill effects as I figured there would be a lot of subjectivity around preferences, but yeah, you're totally right. The straight up calculations get a bit more convoluted when you factor in skill effects (but also, more interesting!)

This is old ik lol. While personally i prefer 4-5roll weapons. It also depends on your characters build. If you are running high focus build i think less rolls wins out. Helps a lot in any fight vs evasion as well.

1 roll weapons are atrocious in the cases of things that make you instantly fail one die roll.

I found the defuser trinket and that bonnet right away on my first play through and that led to me having about 20 healing herbs and the ability to heal whole party by the time I made it to the lich dungeon. As long as my hunter with all that healing stuff didn’t die I was good. Even beat the kraken after it ambushed my party but I just kept healing after every serious hit and happened to have boat repair kits on me so I survived.

Hi, I was curious about the statistics so I did some calculations. What you say in tip 4 deos not make sense. When it comes to expected value only the damage and success probability matter. The number of rolls does not make a difference. And when it comes to variance less rolls is actually better. The standard deviation gets smaller the more rolls you have, meaning the result is closer to the expected value. The big difference is that focus becomes much more effective with less rolls and there is also things like enemies that dodge every non perfect roll.

You're absolutely right when it comes to expected value -- I think someone else made a similar comment about it! The thing is not everyone can do that calculation in their head when all they are presented with (on those cards) are the number of rolls and the max damage amount. And the temptation to look at the higher damage number and decide on that is real (as we've been conditioned to from most other games). I should probably update this with FTK2 and take all of your comments into consideration! (also, thank you kindly for giving the video a watch, I appreciate it very much!)
