I've been using google street view for urban sketching for a year or so. I can visit anywhere in the world without spending money.

If you press the little man button (Second down on the right side) you can’t get to street view in many but not all places. Then you can sketch like you’re sitting right on the sidewalk - or right in the middle of a busy intersection if you are so inclined!

You can go to street level by tapping the small figure on the lower right. It shows blue lines and you can tap those and fly down to street level. I use this all the time! Check it out!

Over the years we have watched you sketch and paint in Singapore to the point places looked familiar on the Ipad. Thanks for showing us how to use Google Earth. I also will look forward to buying the white pen you showed, it seemed to work well. Thanks for the video.

Teoh, I have an IPad tablet and use this Earth view, and can also go right onto the street if I have the “little man” icon . I can sketch and paint anything . From anywhere in the world. Love it.

Thanks SOOO MUCH Teoh! 🙏 I never thought of doing this for sketching! I have not had the opportunity to travel in my life which makes me sad, but this is the next best thing, especially for sketching 🤗. I hope to come to Singapore some day! Please keep your tutorials coming 👍👌 Kind regards Mary from Australia 😁

Great fun! Love your style. Got my fountain pens in different nib sizes including a brush fountain pen. That Pentel brush pen looks nice, too.

Something you can do once you have the screenshot you can use Photoshop or any other photo editer to draw the lines on the top and the bottom of the buildings that you can see as if you were doing a perspective drawing this will help you learn how buildings are shaped in perspective.

This is awesome for reference, but make sure you make your artwork your own as Google Maps are copyrighted materials and you can get into trouble if you’re copying it exactly and claiming it as your own.

The app is a bit limited to aerial 3D, you need a second app to be able to draw from street view, the google earth program is better in the computer, both aerial and street view can be used, also you can go back in time. The program have some satelite views from past years where you can check for changes, in the street view, sometimes you have multiple photo entries in diferent years, so you can draw a street 10 years ago even if the buildings were demolished, that gives the possibility to draw urban areas in a completly diferent way. Another plus from the street view is that in some countries like Portugal, most railroads were mapped so you can draw as if you were in a train, some popular spots, beaches and gardens have 360º or path photos like street view. Some churches or monuments also have that 360º views or virtual tours that help. I recently discovered that you can use 360º videos, its interesting, because you can see 360º where the video passes, you can pause and choose an angle do draw. Thanks for your view on the subject.

Yes very helpful. I have never sketched from Google Earth-but I will now. I can see the advantages of using GE as compared to photo's i.e. one can get different perspectives. And since I am not rich and cannot go to many places around the world-GE is a real gem for sketchers. Thank Teoh-oh and btw how does one take a screen shot from GE?

Oh duh, I have been trying to use Google maps to do this kind of remote sketching, and it never works. Now I know why... I have been using the wrong app! Thanks for making this video!

This sounds like a good idea if it wasn't for one problem, these apps produce a horrible distortion within the surroundings when you turn the view in any way, buildings stretch and fall out of realistic perspective and it makes for a very unreliable reference, the same goes for google maps unfortunately, guess I just gotta take a note from the impressionists and just get out there through hot or cold if i hope to really learn en plain air drawing the right way.

You can draw from the street view on google earth just like you are standing there and you can use it and sell your art by just giving google credit for the source material

Try Street View after You locate where You want to draw. If they have one the perspective should be interesting, eh? :D Google Earth works on the Chromebook ,too. There is a Web version for those with older CB that can't use apps.
