Oh man, you just made one of my favorite Metallica songs that much better, I knew what the song was about, kinda, but this dissection of it next to hemmingways book was excellent my man! This added so much depth to James songwriting, keep this content coming sir, you earned a new subscriber!

Hey Jake, thank you so much for your comment, it's really gratifying to know that our passion for certain subjects is shared by other people in the world. Thanks a million, I hope you come back for more Metallica content :)

You earned my sub for this. Cliff Burton was the reason I got deeply into music theory, HP lovecraft and earnest Hemingway.

Currently reading the book and didn’t know someone wrote a song on it. Don’t usually listen to rock music, but I will give it a try. Very interesting video. Thank you!

Thanks, Maiko! I'm glad you got interested in Metallica coming from the book itself, that's unusual and yet much worth it, I'm glad you found the video. Thanks again!

I read For Whom The Bell Tolls when I was 15, only because I had heard that the Metallica song was based on it. I have to say that was one of the hardest books I have ever read. Hemingway gives so much detail it's unbelievable. Reading Nietzsche was easier and more entertaining than For Whom The Bell Tolls.

I understood James wrote the lyrics based on the movie, not the book. Still the same story of course but it might have influenced the imagery in the lyrics like "the endless grey".

the thing that should not be song was also inspired on lovecraft's book and many other metallica songs. I was only recently made aware of it since I found out about HVL's stories. I said to myself, "hey! this sounds like what metallica was talking about in some of their songs." 🤣

Cliff's riff is from another planet, what could have been if he didn't die, l would dare to say his bandmates wouldn't have cut their hair in the mid nineties, Cliff would have quit first!

This one is actually an official merch one, it's from the Damaged Justice tour, the one that started on Sep 11th, 1988 - 34 years ago, wow... anyhow, it's one of my favorite Metallica t-shirts I own. I also like my Don't Tread on Me t-shirt, along with my Jump in the Fire one. Cheers!

Pardon my ignorance. But wasn’t the Spanish civil war fought between communist and fascist?
@alextamulis2 жыл бұрын
Hey Pocket, how are you? I think they were called republicans versus loyalists, if i'm not mistaken. The Republicans did have values that were left wing, I believe some of them were anarchists as well. Hemingway showed through Robert Jordan that you didn't have to be a communist or to agree with everything that the rebels said; it's more about being anti-fascist. His position lined up with the position of most Americans in the 1940s. Being anti-fascist meant being pro individual rights. As the conflict drags on, he realizes that he does not really believe in the Republican cause but joined their side simply because they fought against Fascism. Because he fights for a side whose causes he does not necessarily support, Robert Jordan experiences a great deal of internal conflict and begins to wonder whether there is really any difference between the Fascist and Republican sides. This is what makes the book so riveting.
@TheRealDill932 жыл бұрын
@@alextamulis thanks for your reply. It was my over simplified understanding of the conflict that led me to believe it was just a communist/fascist civil war
