Someone out-performing is usually a sign either a confluence of good luck occurring or shadiness behind the scenes, both of which typically aren't sustainable, especially when people start looking into them and either exploiting arbitrage to tap into and wittle away at whatever luck advantage they've been enjoying or seeing the red/yellow flags that pull the company down once people start paying closer attention to specifics. Where as a negative indicator usually gets attention by people looking into a company that might've flown under the radar otherwise or attracting attention to an existing, stagnate company that is under-going a painful but necessary restructuring that can be a sign for greatly improved future performance. I can definitely recommend more of Patrick's videos if you're interested as he does cover that sort of stuff in some of his videos. (he's a finance professor that started doing KZbin on the side as a supplement for his classes and did some of his lectures during Covid lockdowns on there as well). His early videos are far more straight forward lectures and lessons, but his more recent stuff is similar to quality to this one as he started find a good balance between entertainment and education, even if it's still very much still heavy on the dry side of humor.

Regression to the mean... Whenever people outperform or underperform in a huge way, they tend to go back to average simply because average is more likely... and no other reason.
@nathanielthompson33395 ай бұрын
yep lol
@theWebWizrdАй бұрын
Although I agree with you that this is a strong effect, that doesn't entirely explain it, since according the research Boyle cited there is not simply a regression to mean performance but actually an outlier performance in the opposite direction. You can explain this by saying it is a regression to a mean *valuation* rather than regression to mean *performance*, but perhaps more insightful imo would be to point out that a postitive mainstream newsarticle should correlate with peak positive expectations and similarly a negative mainstream newsarticle should correlate with peak negative expectations, and so as expectations adjust in the future so does the performance of the stock.

Sidenote: The thing that strikes me about the Icogni ad, and other similar services, is that they are ALSO collecting data on you and essentially centralizing them in their own portfolio. There is one called Rocket Cash or something that I hear about as an ad insert on a certain podcast network, and the thing sounds super sketchy: Finds all the subscriptions, even the ones you forgot about, and helps you manage and delete them to save money. But how can that be, unless they also have access to predatory databases and have all my information to begin with? It's like if the stalker that digs through your trash, also offers a service to buy all your groceries for you, because he knows what you buy. It's SUPER CONVENIENT, because of course he already has all your credit card and identity information. He'll even let himself in, and stock it direct to your fridge while you are at work, because he of course also has keys, whether or not you are paying for this other service.

When you're talking about publicly traded companies, it kinda makes sense. A popular publication praises them and everyone invests, causing the company to become overvalued, the professionals see a collapse coming and get out, which then causes the collapse. In the reverse, negative publicity causes the public to panic and sell, the stock price drops, professionals see a company with decent fundamentals but a run of bad luck, and know it's seriously undervalued so they invest. On top of that a company that had been under performing will often have a change of management and cost cutting measures, they may kill programs they've been experimenting with but haven't been profitable and redouble their focus on their core businesses. A lot of things that can turn a compony around, or they may get bought out, which is usually a good deal for an investor.

But now that I am approaching my 30s I realise success never happens over night and to keep your success you need wisdom. On the other side, if you need to buy a stock at a lower price, you BUY A NEGATIVE STORY , making the stock price crash temporarily , giving you good lower entry price for the stock. Then you repeat step one ... then step two after while .... and so on
