Just as it is in the Constitution for every citizen of the U.S., lawful or not, the right to prevent self-incrimination does not assume guilt, nor does it assume plausible deniability in dodging it. Assuming the refusal to answer is an admittance of guilt is both bias and presumptuous and proves nothing about the Nominee. She understands why she was brought forth and given the occasion to speak while under scrutiny and chose the best answers while not entertaining any attempt to find err in her nomination and candidacy, yet continue to remain professional despite the queries of the Senate. Anyone who cannot or refuses to answer simple questions should be rejected for the position. They are not in legal jeopardy of self incrimination and are not in danger of prosecution. Normal people have to answer questions during job interviews; to dance around answering questions ensures you won't be hired. Same should apply in these hearings.

In my country judges don't get appointed like this, it's a little weird TBH. That being said, I'd imagine anyone who can't answer a question for anything shouldn't be allowed to do the thing they're applying to do. Obviously some things carry more weight than others (flipping burgers compared to judge appointments). However, if I understand your court system correctly and what she was trying to say, was that if she became a judge, she didn't want lawyers to be able to try and get her based on her belief. Again, I'm not an American and not entirely sure how the process goes for knowing which court cases are heard by which judges, but having a judge sympathetic with one side or the other, I imagine, could conceivably cause issues. But again, I am also 100% in the corner of "If a question won't be answered, they shouldn't get the job." Tough call with this appointment system (which, again, I may not fully understand).

Unlike other elected officials, say the senate or house. Judges are supposed to keep their personal feelings out of the court room and rule based on law, precedent etc. It would be inapporpriate for any judge to share their personal beliefs in an official capacity.

However, they are often permitted a great deal of latitude and flexibility in applying 'the law'. For example, a jurist may believe (!) in restorative justice (that society is to blame and not the criminal) and give the guilty party a very light sentence in the name of remedy and/or equity. This decision is based on a belief system - not a strict adherence to the law. More recently at the federal level in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the majority of the court believed (!) that the contentious issue of abortion should be addressed at the state level. The dissenters believed (!) It should be under federal jurisdiction. So you see, a personal belief system can, and often does, play a significant part in a jurist's decision. Belief is a strong, powerful influencer and therefore, I believe, a nominee's belief system is fair game. Questioning a powerful person seeking public public office about their belief system should be a rigorous part of the discourse. This should apply in the executive branch, the legislative branch, and, most assuredly in the judicial where laws are interpreted based on a jurist's belief system. These questions are fair game - and should be answered honestly... Alas, this will never happen by nominees of either party. It's called politics and the country is worse off because of it.
