"The new black conservatives assume that without affirmative action programs, white Americans will make choices on merit rather than on race. Yet they have adduced absolutely no evidence for this: Hence, they are either politically naïve or simply unconcerned about black mobility. Most Americans realize that job-hiring choices are made both on reasons of merit and on personal grounds. And it is this personal dimension that is often influenced by racist perceptions." I grew up poor with an alcoholic father. I went to bed hungry more times than I care to remember. There were very few opportunities for anybody where I grew up. So when I was old enough I joined the USN. I applied myself and did everything I could to better myself. I used the education benefits available to me to get 2 college degrees. After 25 years on active duty I retired and then became a high school teacher. Everything I have I got based on merit and hard work, nobody gave me anything. That is the American Dream!

I worked for Flying Tiger Freight Airline at Los Angeles International Airport for decades. I never saw racism, of any kind in any part of their hiring practices. We had everything, including all genders, races and ages from Vice Presidents, pilots, flight attendants, cargo handlers and all administrative positions as we were a global freight company with military contracts. I am not saying there is no racism anywhere in our country but the constant emphasis on gender and racial issues takes us back into the realm of the divide we find ourselves in today.

Well said. Saying equity doesn’t exist is crazy. America is capitalism. The only color that matters is green. Do y fall for this Us bs Them mentality. Especially when so many examples show otherwise. Look at our Supreme Court, White House. Maybe in corporate culture there are not many minorities at the top, but you don’t just give someone a position because of their race. If it’s your company you put the strongest at the top. Because they are there to make you green. People in current generations are lost. No one’s against st you except those yelling that they are on YOUR SIDE. Just be the best you can be. Times will get hard and there can be ugly people out here but let’s not make those types give is the impression everyone in that race is like that. We all are basically the same. Sht sitting down and hate paying taxes. Let’s build our way up from that commonality :)

Nobody in this clip was arguing to lower standards so that unqualified people can get licenses. The whole equity point is to have systems in place to be able to bring up people who have less opportunities to the level of being qualified. To do that the people with less opportunity need more help to get the same qualifications.

@@jackinzbox. That sounds like equality, which is fine, create equal opportunity, but we live in a meritocricy, so the effort must still be demanded and the standards the exact same. @@bulwerboys6011 That’s not what we are talking about. The chart is not expressing equal opportunities that’s not the point of the chart. And lowering standards only makes the travel more dangerous. People already have equal opportunity. Life may simply not flow in such a way as to wash someone into completion of a goal. If you want to be an airplane pilot put in a lot of work and effort. Some people have to put in more than others because of intelligence or because of life circumstances. It’s not society’s fault that someone was born without any hands or feet. Which is fine when we look at the example that is being used .. kids want to watch a football match over the fence, the tallest kid does not need any boxes to see over the fence, the middle one needs one, the smallest one needs two. It makes sense to distribute it in such a way that all can see over the fence. The problem is that in reality, majority of things they want to distribute is "the result". So it does not matter you work 14 hours a day... no, you make 500k a year, so you should give away a lot of that money because there are people who are lazy and do jack shit and they ought to be on the same level as you! Because equity! That is the problem. This is how they use it. And what is their end goal. This distinction has to be made and aspire for equal opportunity, not equal outcome. If you try to level the equal outcome, our entire society will perish. It will be absolutely doomed and a war will ensue.

@@Fujtajblus For a minute, there, I thought you were going to try and argue that the "watching a football match" thing is how life SHOULD work. Thing is, for better or worse, life ISN'T a "level playing field". Some people are talented, some people have spent years gaining qualifications and some people are just born into rich families. I don't really see why we should attempt to give everybody sufficient assistance so that everybody from Elon Musk to a crackhead in the gutter gets an equal opportunity to "watch the football match". One sister took out loans (still owes on those), another sister served in the Army, & I just worked abd did school kinda slowky. But that AP History class saved me from having to take 2 college classes, which saved me hundreds if dollars, so I could move on. I never looked down on those who didn't take the class or the test, & I doubt those who didn't even cared abt AP History, so who does it hurt? The Senator is full of bs. For one thing the minimum standards are not being breached. The equality/equity chart is bs. The orange color is under dispute and the whole purpose of of the govt intervention in systemic racism is to even out the brown color...which is clearly not to scale. Let's put it another way. In medical terms, can you imagine if hospitals never let residents practice medicine? Because the attendees are the best of the best right? Who cares about their replacements? Every investment requires a sacrifice in the present. To say that the best pool of pilots are white males is bs. The best way to grow the pilot pool is to grow the pool of applicants. The best way to do that is by example...which is diversity hiring. Many diverse would be pilot students wouldn't think that pilot is in the list of eligible careers because they doen't see people like them in that career. That is a very powerful motive. Can you see yourself or your kids as a pro basketball player? Didn't think so. Some fixing needed there too in the reverse direction. Referring to the charts again, the disparity of the brown heights make the required talented and/or grit (orange color) unnecessarily large to overcome the brown advantage.

The third boy is also standing on his toes, but no matter what he does, he is way too short to see the game beyond the fence. On the other side of the poster is the same three boys, but this time the middle boy and the short boy are standing on boxes of two different sizes where they are large enough for the two to easily over the fence. No one is bringing anyone down. Not one boy is negatively affected by the others. ALL can see the game comfortably. Why is that a problem? @@kbpeters4246 you should really speak to someone who has lived in soviet russia, or Cuba, or Venezuela, or Russia. This equity idea you are trying so hard to promote in your well intentioned ignorance has already caused the deaths of over 100 million people over the last century. The hard truth is that beyond the intrinsic value of human life, we are not equally valuable. The scientists who discovered the cure to polio brought more value to society and humanity at large than the guy who bags your gorceries at your corner store. So why on earth would we live in a society where they are rewarded equally? In what world do people continue to strive for more if they are treated equally to the people who strive for nothing? This is and always has been the problem with this argument which is the core problem with communism and which is why modern communist countries have adopted forms of capitalism (which has created inequality) in order to survive. Equal outcome in inherently against human nature. When China's revolution promised that everyone would have food, they didnt mention that 40million people would have to starve to death for people to have their "equal share". As a person of color, there does come an inherent sense of pride from seeing people who look like us in certain positions such as airline or military pilot. As an Air Force brat myself, I often looked up to pilots. They were my rock stars. However, I would never in a million years advocate for relaxing standards in order to see someone like me in those positions. As a matter of fact the source of pride came from knowing that a person accomplished a very difficult feat and underwent years of hardship to attain that position. They overcame academic and logistical obstacles to earn those pilot wings. If I knew that a pilot, whether they look like me or not, did not undergo all of the prudent and necessary steps to attain their position, not only would I not want to fly on a plane with them, I would not respect them as a person. This is the problem with leftism. Under the guise of good intentions they actually create an environment that is so detrimental and disempowering, The unintentionally create more racism than they solve. Should any obvious discrimination and unnecessary barriers be removed? Absolutely. However, they should be removed for everyone. White, black, and everything in between.

Here's how to explain "Get woke, go broke". Equity prioritises the selection process of physical characteristics (i.e. skin color, sex) to provide opportunities to those groups. If that is the priority, then it is no longer about whoever has the best ability to do a job, but who has the highest "privilege". Companies using this are focusing more on "who" is making the products, rather than the "quality" of those products. Thus, equity results in a degrading of those products and services, to the detriment of the customer. Customers will then go elesewhere for their products and services. Company goes broke in the process. Secondly, using a selection process of "physical characteristics" is racism. The woke activisits know this, but are trying to hide it by changing the name to "equity". Don't be fooled by it.

And I refused to be the damn maid to able bodied people. They had food, clothes and shelter and got fun stuff at birthday and Xmas. DEI represents not making an effort. It punishes the upward bound and rewards the downward bound. In life you need to know how to overcome obstacles. The reward is the overcoming. You do it once then you can do it again. Making an effort and doing you best gives you pride. Rewarding the zeros just like the heroes is a loss for everyone.

This equity nonsense that companies have implemented(the place that I work has too),needs to stop and these companies pushing DEI need to allow for a counterpoint to be talked about. I have brought this up with my team at work a time or two,but I highly doubt that they will do anything(but yet they always tell me if you have any thoughts or concerns on something, please let us know). Have any of you experienced this where you work? I have been beyond loyal to this company now for 15 years. There was a point back in 2009 just after Obama get elected and I had an impeach Obama bumper sticker on my car that I guess someone complained about. This. Something I was taught by my running coaches and trainers is that the most satisfying part of completing a race (5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Ultra) is not the completion of the race, but the knowing that the journey you took to get to the finish line is what got you there in the first place. The race and the ultimate completion of said race is nothing more than a celebration of all the hard work you put in prior, and a possible stepping stone to the next mountain you want to try and climb. And just like in life, there will be people who are simply better and faster at getting to the finish line than others. Some people can complete that 5K in 15 minutes. Some in 45. Some not at all. All that matters is that they all got to the starting line in the first place. How, when, and where they finish should be determined by the individual and those around them that want to help them get faster.

Are there people out there incapable of doing certain jobs? Yes. Are there people out there incapable of learning certain jobs? Still yes, but more things are within reach when people make an effort. Bad parenting is often to blame for children unable to focus or apply themselves, and that is usually due to those parents receiving bad parenting as well. Schools focus more on making people feel complacent rather than uncomfortable with their own ineptitude. "No child left behind" is to blame for most children growing up not knowing how to think critically, and their curriculum is to blame (in addition to the parents) for them growing up not understanding HOW to be an adult.

Same goes with the other jobs you mentioned, no? Not to mention that there are numerous stories about doctors who don’t look like their patients, literally ignoring, or not taking symptoms seriously (quick Google search of “Black women in labor, symptoms ignored” shows how common that example actually is). The NFL is in the entertainment industry. Its goal is to attract the widest audience to its genre of entertainment. To do this it (league) must have teams with a variety of characteristics which will attract certain wide segments of the viewing audience. But at the same time these teams must some semblance of winning efficiency to keep their fans happy. This translates to having athletes who will perform consistently above the norm. This requires money to outbid other franchises which are in competition for the same athletes. This bidding is based upon merit or performance excellence NOT equality or equity. End of story.

It's very easy to understand: if school books cost $100, and Bob's parents can afford to buy them, but Dave's parents can't, then you buy the school books for Dave, spending $100 on Dave and $0 on Bob, so they both have the tools to be equal and have equal opportunity in life. What I always find troubling about that particular graphic... is who makes the boxes? At some point it becomes the responsibility of someone to prop up others in that scenario. Is the person able to make their own box also responsible for making several boxes for someone else? At what point does equity require shortening the legs of the tallest person because the shortest can not be propped up any higher? It is also an idea based highly in abstraction, requiring micromanagement at the individual level ( which is the level we all operate in on a daily basis). The equality of opportunity model is much more scalable and manageable without needing detailed individual adjustment. I do not consider it to be the job of society to balance the cosmic scales. All society can do is provide opportunities equally to it's citizens that a person living completely alone will not have.

My interpretation of the graphic is that it is all wrong. The graphic on the left has the brown color completely off scale. The "stepping stones" should be much much much more higher...to the point where the orange (talent/effort) cannot compensate. On the right, govt intervention just tries to level out the brown. Ideally, the brown is leveled and only the orange matters. The argument is the brown. One side says it's the same level (because they can't imagine all their hard work and talent is unaffected by privilege), the other side says that if you were to transplant your brain to a child in India to typical Indian parents (for example) to a slum in India they would end up as successful as they are now. Hmmm...I don't think so.

It seems like Mr. Vance in the video and much of this comment section are strawmannirg the issue of equity vs. equality. No one that advocates for equity is looking for homogeneity in outcomes nor lowering qualifications to have important jobs like surgeons and pilots. It is more about creating an equal playing field of opportunity and combatting generational issues that have barred certain groups from advancing in our economy. People point towards vertical movement as a shining light in the American economy, but it is sad that certain groups are unable to participate in this movement due to issues that cannot be fixed by just giving them equal rights under law. For example, under law, black people and white people have the same equal rights. Unfortunately, many black people and white people do not have an equal playing field when it comes to opportunities and freedoms. I am white, I am from the Deep South, and I attend Ole Miss, one of the most southern schools out there. I have been to the Mississippi Delta and have witnessed the widespread poverty and lack of opportunity that our idea of equality facilitates. We need equity so that people from these communities who have endured slavery, sharecropping, Jim Crow, and generational poverty can have the same opportunities as rich families from Jackson, Mississippi who enjoy generational wealth. Besides just the Mississippi Delta, the phenomenon of generational poverty within the black community is widespread among the South. Take a look at Section 8 housing. All equity is doing is realizing the fact that people groups and communities weren't and still aren't given the same tools as everyone else and aims to provide these tools. There's a saying: when privilege meets equality, it feels like oppression, and all equity is doing is making sure the privilege that I have and many have can be enjoyed by all, but to many, it feels as if they're facing prejudice and injustice when that just isn't true.
