Let’s say you were a teacher, and you had a student who refused to show up to class to learn the content, but when they came on the day of the test they claimed that the class shouldn’t take it because they didn’t know anything about topic. Would you say “Okay class forget the test, we’re gonna teach the same thing we already taught again because this guy wasn’t here,” or are you going to say, “Sucks to be you,” and make them take the test anyways. This is what the Republicans did. Like a teacher with lesson plans, the committee has a very strict schedule of things it needs to do on any given day. If the Republicans want to act like the stuck up idiots they are and boycott their chance to speak, they can do that, but just like in a classroom, everyone else is going to move on with or without them.

I am not a US citizen, but what I see here is very similar to what happens in other Western democracy parliaments, where the Right/Conservatives/Reps ... think that those in the other side plays nice with the same rules as them. It happened because the Republicans changed the rules back in 2017 to allow it to happen (ignore blue slip tradition), and then Republicans proceeded to do things like push through Amy Coney Barrett by telling Democrats they could NOT talk for as long as they want and delay things - that the time for talking was over and they were moving on to voting on the nominee even if Democrats objected and wanted to keep talking. This is them seeing the rules being applied to Republicans the same way they were applied to Democrats.

I believe he has been in Washington DC for about 41 years. (1982 - present) Durbin is a lawyer and politician, the senior US senator (Democrat) Illinois. Since 1997. In his fifth (6 year) Senate term and has served as the Senate Democratic whip since 2005 and as the Senate majority whip since 2021 Earlier he was a 7 (2 year) term for Rep in Congress. Which he won by 1,400-votes due to gerrymandering district lines. He said he would send "a message to Washington and to President Reagan that our economic policies are not working."

Apparently there is no fair and balanced procedure for committee proceedings. When all that can happen is that Senators put up a fuss, it demonstrates that there is a lack in a balance of power and checks and balances. It should not be up to the committee chairperson to decide on procedure, every contingency should be written down and there should be a definite plan of action for each. Good points. While I abhor this sort of violation of both explicit and implicit rules and understandings, I do have to say I’m happy they kept Garland off the Supreme Court. Since he’s been in as AG, he’s shown a complete disregard for the Constitution. - But “the ends justify the means” is a slippery, dangerous slope. In this case, I don’t understand what the point was: What did Durbin think he was actually gaining by silencing the other side? Was he afraid he wouldn’t have the votes if some people on the fence got to hear the arguments? It seems like an awfully small thing to blow up the Judiciary Committee over 🤔
