Bought a new Rav4 from Crown....I had a serious problem with a leak when going through car wash in the back hatch. They worked with Toyota to fix. Provided me a Rav 4 for my vacation to Alabama with my dog and daughter as that was why I bought the vehicle. Took more than two months. But, it was fixed right and I've had no problems since (2015). I hope that is true for you as well. Also, I ordered a 2021 Travato from your folks at Rockford Winnegabo today. I'm really excited to enter this journey. I told them you were selling Travatos for them. Mick was going to mention it to you. Thank you for your channel and all the great information. Too bad we did not know each other officially. I live about 20 minutes from Crown in the Grandville school district. Maybe next time.... I hope to meet you some day on the road. Travel well!

Check your insurance - if you have full-timers coverage then normally you would have a benefit for hotel stay if your vehicle is in shop. Caveat is you are a certain distance from your residence address. If you do not have full-timers coverage ask your carrier about it. Sorry to hear about engine difficulties. The thought I tend to have these days is whether they are just throwing parts at the problem until they get lucky. Hard to find the expert who knows their craft and takes the time to troubleshoot and diagnose. Stay safe out there.

You've made the case for seriously evaluating alternatives to a Travato! 10 days in a dealer for repairs after 48,000 miles for a vehicle that costs well over $100,000? Totally ridiculous!

I've been watching your troubles and the charges you got from several garages...You are getting royally , well you know what..I have a 2010 Dodge Ram diesel with 35,000 miles on it..The air cleaners can be bought for about 20$ for a set of three, Ebay or Amazon...It takes about 10 minutes to take off the cips, pull the dirty filter out and snap the new one in..Same for the cabin air filter..Usually behind the glove box..Ten minutes and cheaper than the large one under the hood..Rocker arms..They connect to the valves and keep them moving..If you had a bad head there are only two ways to ruin one of them..Heat is the killer..Because you do not have enough coolant running through the engine, including the head, or an oil failure which will eventually sieze the engine..But you will get an overheating warning, either by a light or a gauge.The same with the oil..You will get warnings, then you will hear a loud tapping because the valves will be tapping loudly..duh.Heat is a killer in any engine..Usually I do my own work, even at 69..Oil changes, I do them..Dirty and oily, of course, and I use synthetic oil in All my engines..12 quarts for the diesel and the synthetic filter is about 10$.. The oil, about 75$..Take the old oil to any oil drop off at any "dump"..They will have a place to drop it off..Do this in a Dodge garage? 225$.I always demand to see the old parts whenever they replace something I either can''t do, or really don't want to..I want the old part in the new box they just took the new part out of...Replace a lousy radiator hose, replace the antifreeze, do it yourself for 40-50$..Garages will figure out real fast that you don't know engines, then ding ding ding..Find an older guy who has worked on stuff for years and get them to do the tuneups, oil changes, air filters and save hundreds and hundreds of dollars.Good luck..Norm.Oh has anyone ever checked wheel alignment and the wheel balance..You can lose the weights if you hit a curb, bend a rim, or something wore out like tie rods, ball joints and make it wobble..

I would suggest that you invest $10-20 into an ELM-327. It's a Bluetooth device that plugs into your diagnostic port at the bottom of the dash. There are a number of apps that communicate with the device, but I've been using Torque Pro ($4.99) for the better part of the last decade. This will let you monitor any trouble codes, including clearing them, to see if the problem is recurring. A flashing MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light, or "Check Engine Light") always means that a misfire is occurring. There is no specific trouble code that would lead to the conclusion of mechanical damage like a faulty cylinder head, but monitoring codes in real time may have offered clues, especially when compared with problem patterns specific to the ProMaster. All cars "speak the same language" since 1996, and trouble codes will be in the P#### format. For instance, P0301 means a misfire in cylinder 1 in any vehicle. A code with a 1 in the 1st digit, such as P1###, will be specific to that manufacturer, but a definition will still likely be found online. I've been checking cars for trouble codes since the early '80's, when I would routinely check my parents' cars. At that time, you could short terminals A and B in a GM diagnostic port with a paper clip, then turn on the car and count the flashes of the MIL to come up with a code. I also have several years experience in retail auto parts. Most ELM-327 units will come with a software disc, which should be promptly thrown in the trash. It's likely full of malware, and is not needed to operate the unit or pair with the app on your phone. I used to carry an expensive code reader with me, but gave it away once the Bluetooth devices became available. For less than $20, I've got more functionality than that old reader. Good Luck, from another full-timer. I ditched the house for a 16' 2005 Casita in late 2004, and currently live aboard a 16' 2014 Casita bought in late 2013. Current tow vehicle is GMC Envoy with Atlas 4.2 straight 6 motor.

I am not a mechanic just a guy who has owned a lot of vehicles and two Pentastars but pre-FIAT. These codes are pretty easy to read by your self with a Bluetooth dongle that you put on your diagnostic port. It cost me $20 for the dongle and $5 for the software for my tablet/phone. It abates the lack of control feeling that you get when you see that light flash. You can clear the code/codes and that may be the end of it. If it returns then its definitely time to seek professional advice. Oxygen sensors problems can destroy your catalytic converter so not so cheap to replace. Unfortunately, the big problem is a guy named Tony. Fix It Again Tony or FIAT. It's always a crapshoot when buying a domestic. Don't be fooled into thinking the Mercedes is the solution. They are probably more reliable but still, when they do break down you get Mercedes pricing and a great lack of dealerships. Sorry to hear about your Mechanical issues. Hope this is the last of them.

This is a typical experience with a Chrysler product, i.e. major engine problems at only 47K of mostly highway miles. This is one of the major disadvantages of the Promaster van platform. If one wishes to avoid the cost and maintenance of the much more robust Mercedes Benz platform, I believe that the Ford Transit would be a better bet at this point, even with the turbo (Ecoboost) engine. The Ford would be far from perfect, but likely more durable and reliable than the Ram, plus the Fords have more safety equipment. I am sorry that you were inconvenienced, Scott. Next time, buy a Pleasure-Way Ontour 2.2.

Kinda bad that a newer car would have these kinds of issues. Cylinder misfires can be caused by a bunch of things, so that may be the issue in hard to find the diagnosis. Here’s the tip I got from your experience. We should not buy a Dodge. Which is actually a Fiat. Replace a cylinder head and valve lifters in 48,000 miles? Looks like we will go with the Ford. We had two RVs, one after the other, that were built on the Mercedes Sprinter diesel chassis. No problems with the Mercedes. Except far to get serviced and expensive upkeep. We’re in the market for a new RV. Probably a Ford. Either an LTV or Pleasureway. Thanks for your great videos!

Go Small. Live Large! I forgot to ask you where you keep your cat litter, I am interested in the travato, at first I wanted the twin beds, but I didn't see where I could put my cat litter box, the one like yours I could probably put under the bed as long as there was an outlet, it is a self cleaning box, if I don't have to live without it I would rather not

Is that common? It’s a new van not a 20yo rig. Wth. I’m seriously reconsidering the travato. Was it a legitimate fix? Some shops say it’s worse than what it really is. Bill you for service and parts header... yet only thing they do is change a sensor and a fuse.

Give us an update if dealer helped with hotel bill? I was confused about zero bill from dealer ..I thought unit was out of warranty 12 months/ 15,000 mikes
@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill for your follow up questions. Portion of the Hotel bill wasn’t reimbursed. Sad, but wasn’t expecting them to actually follow through. The 12 month / 15,000 mile warranty you mention is the Winnebago build out warranty, not the Ram Promaster warranty. For the cylinder head that was repaired that was covered under the power train warranty which ends at 50,000 mile. The chassis was just under 50k miles. So the repair was covered.

Hey Scott...in case you didn't know, check out AAA Premier RV... they have a benefit known as Trip Interruption.. They would have paid for your hotel and incidental food expenses up to $1,500..... You can just drive the vehicle in with the disablement, it doesn't have to be in an accident.... this is different from AAA Plus..... it's important because AAA Premier RV has a better coverage...I think AAA Plus will only cover you in the event of an accident.....all of these details are really important.... The fact that you had an incident like this with only 48,000 miles is really disconcerting.. if I were you, I'd get rid of the vehicle and start over.... sorry.... Just my opinion.... Look, this is not the first time I've seen your channel with warranty repairs....I have over 51,000 miles on my Mercedes, and while I can't say that we have not had a few issues, the engine cylinder head??? WTF??? Go ahead and check out the AAA Premier RV.... you're going to be impressed..... take care...--- Mark

The cause of the need for a new head at 48,000 miles is crystal clear to those of us who know about cars. Your Travato is a Fiat. FCA. It's hard to believe it made it 48,000 miles before a catastrophic failure. The other head is likely next, as is the transmission in that thing. While it costs real money, buy an FCA (not third party) extended warranty if one is available before your factory warranty expires. With the miles you drive, buy it for as many miles as they offer it. You are lugging a lot of weight for that van and it WILL continue to break. The cost of the warranty will be trivial compared to what the out of pocket costs will be.
@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. Looking into extended warranty tomorrow

I have a Mercury Montego and it has 165,00 miles. I think around 150,000 the engine stared up rough. It was the coil. I had 3 front front plugs replaced and 3 coils. Your van has less than 100,000 miles and needs engine work. Is that normal for the Ram,Dodge? I like you cat meowing. He wants your attention.

Scott, I think you suffered from a failure of which is a known problem with the V6 Pentastar engine, (excessive internal wear due to manufacturing / design issue) has been known since 2011 for all Promasters to date, the remedy of which for some has now developed into a class-action lawsuit against FCA. Check engine light, ticking noise coming from the left cylinder bank (not sure what perspective "left" means, assuming left when looking at the motor from the outside). I would assume that your cylinder head was replaced with a re-designed head that supposedly fixes the problem. And it is good that the dealer work was completely covered. This CA was a result of FCA not honoring the extended warranty that was setup specifically to address this problem for certain owners. www.classaction.org/news/fca-us-hit-with-class-action-over-allegedly-refusing-warranty-coverage-for-pentastar-v-6-engine-ticking-defect#:~:text=Filed%20in%20Montana%2C%20the%2030,prematurely%20in%20the%20course%20of

It seems like working on an RV is like working on a human who is sick with an unknown disease. You see symptoms, have to test, and you don't always know what the real issue is. You just try and try again. Also... it's pronounced LA KEEN-TA (Quinta is a type of of "country place"). The hotel started in '68 during the San Antonio HemisFair. 😁 Be seeing you!

@lecsu1314 жыл бұрын
It is completely abnormal and scary that you had a Cylinder Head problem at that low mileage. Maybe running with that check light caused the Cylinder Head problems. I have fixed the Cylinder Head (more of a tune up) on my VW Jetta at 500.000 miles just because I wanted to. But my father had a radiator problem, engine couldn't cool off, forced to drive (was in the middle of nowhere) and blew the Cylinder Head 1 mile away from the service shop. So heat will kill the cylinder head and I think it's what happened to you too.

Considering just getting a Toyota Land Cruiser and getting real friendly with motel six every third night. I refuse to buy a vehicle that will strand me like that.

Way to go Fiat. No way a reputable engine needs a top end rebuild at 48k. The early work is not necessarily wrong you just end up fixing other broken things until you dig deep enough to get to the root cause and likely source of other failures. These Fiat problems are way too common. What you said about 'going thru it'... sounds like me and many I know talking about riding a motorcycle. If you've never riden it's best if you don't you'll want to stay on 2 wheels forever. I call it "being in a place" vs. going thru a place.
