Thank you. The story was most entertaining. But what I loved most was the moral of the story with Biblical references. Shalom

My granddad was from Boogerholler. It was 'bad place.' Yeah, I guess! I just wish I would have given him more attention and listened to him talk about those days. 😟

Knew many men alive during this time including my father. Knew a woman who said she was Tanner's daughter. These where all fine people. They'd give you the shirt off their back. But, if you did wrong in their eyes, they'd kill you with no thought. IMO, WV was a far better place then.

Dude, whether or not you believe that the Bible is a literal record of history, it's the basis of Western civilization so using it as a framing device for these stories is a great choice!

Those types of outlaws didn’t leave clay, they ran for office and now run the county. Same names still all over.

@@AmericanMythology lived in clay county from 1993 - 2008, I married a girl from there, we had two daughters and I had to get them out of there so they wouldn’t up like every other girl from clay, pregnant at 16 lol. My oldest graduated from Flagler university in st Augustine and is a teacher, just got married a few weeks ago at 23 years old, the youngest is in her 5th year of college getting her PhD. Im not exaggerating when I say not a single childhood friend they had had went to college at all and most were teenage mothers. That county is the most backwards place in WV by far and I’ve been all over, (well Boone county is close). There’s some good older folks, most have passed but if you are working age, you either move away or stay and become a ward of the government. I’m a welder and work out of town so I have to travel, can live anywhere but besides a few like me, Clay is rotten with the most corrupt good old boy government since the klan was in control

@@shanek6582 That’s some sad stuff. The roughest place I’ve been in WV is Matewan down in Mingo county. I saw a place full of fighting cocks and was told they belonged to the sheriff.

@@AmericanMythology lol, probably Sid Hatfields descendant. Yup, it’s rough down there as well, you can probably tell I’ve had some sour dealings with Clay county, guess I’m a little jaded. My great grandmother Melissa Walker had a hotel/train station on the river at procious in clay county, she’s in the local history books, rouser holler, named after her supposedly, she was a cut up with the locals so they called her the old rouser.

@@shanek6582 It's a different world out there in the sticks. No doubt about it. When I was researching this stuff, I ran into a few individuals that wanted to know where my family was from before they'd say anything. As soon, as I started talking about my roots in Braxton county, they'd relax and share what they knew. It's a funny thing, because on one hand, as the interested outsider, I want to document these things--but on the other hand, as someone steeped in Appalachian culture, I understand the instinct to "protect your people." I feel that myself, and try to respect that for others as I'm telling their stories. Thanks for sharing about your great grandmother. I'm sure there are some good stories about her with a nickname like "the old rouser."
