I trained on the M-14 and M-16 in 1969, and was offered free accommodations in 'Nam shortly afterwards. We did get to briefly enjoy the full auto function on the 16's complete with tracer rounds. It was a lot of fun, but is rarely a practical way to use the weapon. The Army knew that too, and replaced that function with a five round burst mode, or maybe it was three rounds, I forget... plus I never was issued the newer model. Mine also didn't have the forward assist ram on the side to help clear jambs, which were an occasional problem back then. Other than the heavier weight, I kind of liked the M-14 better, mostly because it was chambered in 7.62, but that extra weight does make a very noticeable difference after lugging one around for a few hours.

He's still locked up and has been for almost a year. There's an appeal going on, but it's moving very slowly. He was using his KZbin channel to promote a product that was a metal card with a picture of a lightning link (drop-in auto sear) on it and the Feds decided that it was a machine gun, even though they couldn't cut it out on the lines and get it to run full-auto, so they convicted him and sentenced him to years in prison, along with Justin Ervin, the maker of the "Auto Key Card".

Technically, you can have RPGs and other stuff like that. They're called "destructive devices" and are also NFA items. I think the "bad guys" aren't using machine guns in crimes because there's not a lot of them out there, relatively speaking, but Glock switches are machine guns and they're being used in tons of crimes in places like Chicago.

I am a 2A man and love my weapons, but I don't lose sleep over not having a machine gun... and honest, I wouldn't be all that hurt over having less firepower than I do. It is the availability of these items that gives permits "the bad guys" to use them in crimes. Hell, I made a .22 machine pistol (and destroyed it shortly thereafter) back in the day. The penalties of getting caught with that weapon did not justify owning it. Likewise, criminals don't have them either. To your second point, we can have almost any weapon we want... with the right paperwork, but I was arrested for "manufacturing prohibited explosive weapons" (class A felony). I was pretty upset about that but now recognize that there is a damn good reason that the government was unhappy about me doing what I did. I had no prior charges and a good lawyer so that charge was expunged after a short period on probation. I LOVED explosives. I LOVED my automatic weapon, but the selfishness of proliferating weapons like that for my own pleasure was just that... selfish. I'm not entirely sure why so many people are complaining about modifications to firearms being made illegal. We know what countries with citizens wielding high power arms look like. They are war torn nations and don't resemble any place anyone I know would want to live... but many of us want that. As with so many other things in history, the desires of a few take precedents over the needs of the many.
