someone is gonna get hurt by using a cheap tent camping? oh really...well if you're camping and it starts raining and the tent leaks, you just get in the car...seriously..most of these cheap tents serve a purpose, 99% of the time they're used in someones backyard, they're not meant to be hardcore weather tents...lol...and most people camping are gonna look at the weather report, not go out in a storm on purpose in the middle of winter...geez. most camping is done in the summer and nobody is gonna die using a cheap tent, if it rains you just get in the car..you don't die from using a cheat tent...you're totally over reacting, most out fatalities are not from the person using a walmart tent, its crap like people gettting lost, not having proper clothing, no matches, they go out in the middle of nowhere unprepared, sometimes with no conatiners for water, no matches...they don't die at a campground using a cheap tent.

There are plenty of hypothetical families who would go camping in a garbage $40 tent who would not have gone camping at all in a decent $150+ tent. Step 1: write off the 20% of these people who have a miserable time in poor weather. Step 2: assume 10% of the people who encounter good weather with garbage equipment realize they love camping / the wilderness, and keep chasing that for the rest of their lives, but with better equipment. Does this model justify the use of the garbage tent? I am part of the 20% who got soaked in step 1 by the way -- 30 years ago -- and it still managed to plant that seed.

I think this series is important and fun. The last time I slept in a tent was in high school and I woke up to a small creek running down the inside of it. I was soaked! And honestly it’s a shame my camping days ended there. Although we did have a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. Your series has inspired me to reconsider going camping again and I am happy you are doing this testing so I can avoid the crap! LOL Thank you!

This is exactly the situation I’ve been in every time I’ve gone tent camping in rainy wx. The one time I remember the most, one tent was lucky and just leaked badly getting everything damp, cold, and miserable. The rest of the tents were so leaky, they literally flooded. I remember seeing bags & sleeping bags floating in the in-tent pools.😢

Don't know if this saying exists in English as well, but in Germany we say "whoever buys cheaps, buys twice". Because the cheap gear will be so bad, you are forced to buy another (more expensive) one very soon. So far this saying has been true for me. Whenever I thought I could save some money buy buying cheap gear, I ended up regretting the decision. Sadly, the only advice I can give is to wait until more expensive gear is on sale somewhere. But imo it's worth the wait.

The best money I ever spent was on our only tent - a pop up 2 person dome tent back in 1982. $150 from Wal Mart. We wanted to go across the USA but motels would have broken the budget. So we decided to car tent camp. Husband used seam sealant on the tent. And in 12 years of camping we never saw a leak. And no condensation. And we went through some wrath of god prairie stranglers too. One in the Badlands. Bought a load of so called “survival” meals, just add water. Did the cross country trip twice, ten years apart. And many shorter trips to specific parts of the country. Some of our best times. We had fantasies do doing it in retirement. Glad we did it then. Because by the time we retired, we didn’t have the energy. I couldn’t crawl in and out of a tent anymore.

As amusing as the swimming pool was, it frightens me to think that some young family may be thinking this would be a good starter tent to begin camping with! In the 60s my aunt bought this massive tent for the family of 8. Had many poles not shock corded. The set up directions got lost. Named the drought buster. It didn’t leak . They didn’t camp much, we borrowed it for a cross country trip. We watched the storm clouds roll in as we were driving pulled in. 4 kids two parents set this up in record time. “ set it up tight it’s getting windy” it rained hard. Water didn’t come in from the floor seam it came in through the Roof. Like a shower . The only part of that tent that wasn’t leaking was the floor. Finally dad took a sharp knife cut a hole in the floor. So the water would drain out. We only had trouble that one night. This reminds me of that.

I always set up my new tents before I use them... and waterproof if I am keeping them... and to keep water from flowing off the tent and under it, I tuck the extra ground tarp under the tent, so none of that sticks out. I camped with maria, an experienced backpacker, on the Colorado River in Utah. She found the perfect spot, flat, smooth dirt, no rocks or such and set up there. I set up on a slope. In the evening, it rained... hard. I was dry on my slope but when I checked on Maria, the place she set up was smooth and flat and beautiful because that is where all the mud washed down. Her tent was in 2" of water and pouring inside and she was too miserable to leave. So I trenched the area to drain the water, then set tarps all over her tent to divert water. All in the rain. She survived because i was willing to do all that work in the cold rain while she complained that she was wet and cold.

I learned a long time ago always take with you a very large piece of plastic that you can use as a rain fly one that will cover the entire tent. I’m 58 years old and I learned that when I was a kid so these rain flies they put on some of these tents are not worth having so yeah you can have a cheaper tent, but as long as you have that nice, big rain fly that covers the entire tent, you will stay dry if you don’t have it you’re gonna get wet

You should do a video of all these tents... Sealed after you test them from the store. A test of your personal sealing of them. I see a trend where the cheap tents don't seal the bottom edge

But as he said in the video about the stove, is it worth the time and added cost? Spend a bit more and get a tent that doesn't need additional work to do the job correctly.

I loved your quote: “Never argue with stupid people. (but it goes on after that) They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” - Mark Twain. Maybe you should have some fun with the reviews. Like: I love the tent, I think I've grown a bit since the purchase. Only 5 feet 4 before and I do not fit in it so I must be over 6 feet now. Amazing at 40 years of age. And the secret hydration system is awesome. After some mild and heavier rain, the tent collected about 5 gallons of water on the inside. Making for a refreshing wake up and I didn't even have to go out to get water for my morning coffee. I'm loving it. 5 stars!

Years back; shortly after a school shooting, Dicks Sporting Goods stopped selling firearms (except BB guns) in protest. So, I stopped shopping there in protest. And would encourage everyone else who values the 2nd amendment to do the same. Love your videos Luke! Keep up the good work!

Really appreciate what you’re doing your format and your personality. Great show. One of the big problems in these reviews is finding out and sharing who the manufacturer is. Not the brand which can be easily changed to escape bad reviews. I have come across so many amazing, beautifully marketed products that seem to be made in the USA, and when you dig deeper only to find their actually made in China. They have amazing marketing resources.

These videos are a reminder of growing up in scouts and using a "4 person" tent for just one person and feeling like there was no room inside. I've been switching to tents with vestibule space but haven't used them yet.

REI’s legit. I’m so fortunate to only live about 5 miles from a store. It’s nearly always busy. Their staff are super knowledgable and all the products I’ve purchased have been successful. I pay attention to the reviews on the REI website, but still do off-site research before making the decision to buy any product.

This series is so important. I'm on an extremely limited budget - I know you get what you pay for (not always but when you're talking about super cheap, you can't expect premium qualit) but it should at least be serviceable and safe to use (for the intended purpose, I wouldn't expect a lightweight summer shelter to work in a winter blizzard.) To put it bluntly, it should do what it says on the tin! It can be hard getting into camping/hiking on a very limited budget (often KZbinrs will have budget lists that are well out of my price range) but thanks to channels like this I've found some absolute gems. So far I have the decathlon backpack Luke recommended, decathlon down puffy jacket I found in a charity shop (thrift shop for Americans), merino base layers I got in the black Friday sales, a cheap grid fleece & synthetic wicking top from Decathlon, thermal tights from Home Bargains (one of those discount home goods stores), One Tigris quilt for summer, second hand Rab -10C sleeping bag off eBay, Trekology sleeping pad plus a cheap reflective foam mat off eBay (looking to upgrade to a better R value pad soon), Trekology trekking poles, cheap wood stove (free fuel!) and pot off amazon, and the Naturehike Cloud Up 2 tent without the snow skirt from Ali Express (cheaper than Amazon if you don't mind waiting for shipping) - got the tent after reading the comments on the TOGR review video, tons of people recommending the non-snow-skirt version and it's been amazing so far! The one slightly pricier item I got early on was a raincoat, I started with the Marmot Precip which I got half price on sale - it's a size too big and not the colour I would choose, but who cares! Great for hiking in light to moderate rain, can withstand hours of drizzle (I live in Wales, constantly drizzle is out default lol) or short durations of very heavy rain. Does wet out after that, but it's absolutely fine for the summer, and pretty lightweight. Not very breathable fabric but has put zips for heat/moisture management (a must for me!!) I've recently upgraded to the Outdoor Research Aspire (women's version of the Foray) as a more heavy duty raincoat for serious rain and cold weather, when being dry is a safety concern not just a comfort issue. Obviously it can be a safety issue in the summer too, the nights can be cold, so do your own safety assessment before each trip! In Wales the climate is generally mild, but I wouldn't go out with just the Precip during a cold snap or if torrential rain was forecast, and I would always have dry clothes, fire starting material, and an some kind of shelter with me, even for a day hike in the summer. There is an upgraded OR Aspire II out which means you can pick up the original one super cheap if you can find it - I got mine from eBay, second hand but unworn with tags still on, £65. This is a top tip - go for older season's gear! You can find great older items on eBay or discount stores online. Just Google it and see what comes up! I decided what fabric I wanted (gore-tex paclite or equivalent) what features were essential to me (pit zips and a peaked hood) and make a short list of jackets that meet the criteria. Then, look for past seasons or prior versions of the jackets, or older jackets by the same company. I then looked for reviews of the items, either Reddit, KZbin, blogs, or gear review sites. Don't get hung up on the current season's fancy features (don't watch too many KZbin videos about how awesome the latest £300 jacket is!) Simply focus on what really matters to you, and what conditions you will take it out in. Check the older models still meet your criteria (often they will) and if so, Google around and set up searches on eBay to alert you if one goes up for sale. Look for your size or larger, as it doesn't really matter for a raincoat. Ideally look for unworn/new with tags, but second hand can be fine too, just be prepared to re-do the DWR/water repellant coating as that's the thing that tends to fail with time/use. Do check that there aren't any holes or damage to the jacket, ask the seller outright so you have a record of their response. That way, if the jacket does end up being faulty, you can more easily get a refund. Always pay with PayPal so you have the best buyer protection - not everyone knows this but with PayPal you have 3 months to request a refund, and they almost always side with the buyer as long as you have a legitimate reason. Take photos and document everything, including conversations with the seller. If they told you it is mint condition but it clearly isn't, PayPal will definitely refund you. You can't rely on this 100% of the time, but I've never had an issue even after several months (sometimes it takes a while to realise the item isn't what the seller claimed it was!) Finally, be patient, be firm where necessary and flexible in all other areas, and always come back to your core criteria and how you will use the jacket. What do you NEED it to do, and what is an optional extra? What is vital for keeping you safe, and what can you compromise on? Try to totally disregard things like colour, style etc. Sounds obvious but as a girl who likes to look good, I have to consciously remind myself of this! Who cares about looking good when you're out in torrential rain or freezing temperatures, right? Staying dry and warm is a million times more important, for my safety as well as comfort. You should always be a smart shopper whatever your budget, but being on a very limited budget means you must go the extra mile to do your research, work out what you actually need, and be patient while you search for it. Always buy with your head, not your heart. Happy adventuring!

Haha! I was in the "didn't know any better" group when it came to alcohol stoves. I picked up something that looks like a rebranded Red Camp. This was BEFORE watching your video, so down boy, down! Since then I've watched some comparisons and am really impressed with how the Trangia has withstood the test of time and still runs with the best of them. I recently picked up the smaller Storm Cooker and am very impressed. Much credit to the Paleo Hiker for making it easy to decide.

Luke, you missed a key component when you bought this tent. According to Dick's Sporting Goods website, people who bought this tent frequently bought the Intex Dura-Beam Classic Downy Queen Airbed. You only bought the pool and not floating air-mattress.

I actually have the older version of this tent and it worked okay for a couple of trips. Then it began to leak. I threw it in the trash, literally. Then I purchased a Eureka Solitaire and immediately broke one of the poles and sacrificed a fishing rod to replace it on the trip. I now have a 4 person Eureka tent that is excellent and has lasted several years now.

I served my country in the military. We were given gear that would keep us dry. A poncho or a half tent to share with a platoon buddy, sometimes the rain became hydration and personal hygiene. We learned to overcome and to adapt. I once thought we would drown in a low swell next to a road on the side of a mountain when a severe storm with tornadic rotation passed over our recon squad. We were ordered to stack weapons and lay in the swell which filled up like a mad river, Guys were hanging on to each other we were grabbing and hanging on to tree roots anything attached to the ground keeping our heads above the flooding waters. I thought that day we were going to die. We made it and found a place to recover and dry out. It angers me that a billion-dollar corporation is selling junk like this for profit and knowing it leaks. Great job in exposing the crooks the cheaters for profit. Keep up the great reviews Luke,
